Ciaran Traynor produced a flawless round of golf to win the latest leg of the National Tile and Flooring Autumn Series over the weekend of October 11 and 12.
Playing off six, he had 17 pars and a birdie – at the third hole – to go around in 71 gross. He earned four points for that birdie and had three-point pars at the fourth, seventh, 11th, 15th and 16th to record a stableford score of 43 points, having gone out in 22 points and come home in 21.
That was enough to give him a one point victory from the in-form Adrian Kenny who recently won both the Gold Medal and the IJM Minor Scratch Matchplay Trophy.
Playing off 19, Kenny went out in 20 points thanks to three-point pars at the first and eighth and a three-point bogey at the index-one fourth, with his only blemish coming at the third where he double-bogeyed for one point. He had another double bogey at the 17th, but three-point pars at the 10th, 11th, 14th, 15th and 18th saw him cover the back nine in 22 points for an overall total of 42.
Alan McCabe (11) made a welcome return to the prizes by winning Division 1 with 40 points, which was one better than Paul Murphy (2). John Prendergast (16) took Division 2, with 41 points with Robert Lynch (16) a point further back. Countback was needed in Division 3 as Noel Reidy (20) pipped Michael Noone (21) after both had shot 39 points.
Niall Henry, with 38 points, took the gross prize. His round of 70 gross included an eagle three at the 10th, a birdie three at the 16th and a bogey five at the eighth as he parred the other 15 holes.
Visitor Derek Yorke (14) from Mannan Castle won last Wednesday’s McKenna Man Open Singles Stableford with a score of 42 points as Ciaran Johnston (+1) took both the Division 1 and Gross Recognition accolades. His gross score of 68 included an albatross at the par five sixth when his six iron second shot found the hole. Daniel Gallagher won Division 2 and Timothy Jewell (28) took Division 3.
The annual interclub matches against Greenore for the DunGreen Cup and the GreenDun Cup took place over the last few weeks in Greenore and saw the home team come out on top, but Dundalk did taste success in the DunDun Cup at home to Dunmurry.
Ben Cahill finished T23 in the latest round of the R&A Student Series, which was played at Malone Golf Club in Belfast. He shot rounds of 74, 73 and 73 for the 54-hole event. One of the rounds of the year came on the Sunday morning before last when 18-handicapper Darren O’Reilly shot an incredible 46 points – which included three birdies and eight pars – to win by one shot.
Division 1 was won by Mark Lambe (1) with a score of 39 points. A back nine of 20 points won it for him on the countback from Paul McVeigh who plays off nine.
Gerry McMahan (12) won Division 2 with a score of 36 points. It was no surprise to see Gerry in the winner’s enclosure again after having a stellar year so far. Paddy Byrne, who plays off 14, finished in second place with 35 points.
Division 3 was won by 20-handicapper Kevin Gavigan with a brilliant 45 points. A front nine of 22 points was followed up with a back nine of 23. The runner-up was Ricky McKeown (21) with 42 points.

Some very tricky pin positions were encountered by the Mannan Castle senior golfers in their weekly competition on Tuesday of last week and the difficulty was reflected in the scores returned for the nine holes.
Dick Bourke (7) stuck well to the task in hand, however, and was rewarded with pars in his final three holes to card 19 points and overall victory.
Paddy Kingham (9) followed up the previous week’s win in Category 1 with a repeat success, despite a two-point penalty. Paddy scored 18 points which included three pars and left him with a nett 16 points.
Both categories 2 and 3 were won with 17 points. Richard Rountree (12) took Category 2 thanks to steady golf and scoring on each hole, while Patrick Breen (16) – in Category 3 – had a great finish to his round, scoring seven points on his final two holes.
Mannan Ladies
Very damp conditions and punishing rough curtailed scoring in last Wednesday’s subsidised 18-hole competition, with the top three each failing to score on three holes.
Fresh from a victory away the previous weekend, 16-handicapper Mary Cassidy continued her winning ways with the top score of 32 points.
Also back from warm weather training, Jo Barry (19) picked up yet another prize, topping Division 1 with 31 points, and Noreen Murphy (30) was the best in Division 2 with 30 points.
Another call for the Winter League – there is still time to sign up and enjoy playing shorter rounds.
