Flightscope Mevo Gen2: Honest Review
Is the Flight Scope Meo Gen 2 actually any good? Well, I’ve been testing it out for the past few days, and I’m about to explain my experiences with it, what’s good about it, what’s not so good, and whether or not I’d recommend this launch monitor for you. Now, before we get started, if this device is something that you are interested in, then be sure to check out the links in the description below because those links will save you a little bit of money and make sure that you’re getting the Flight Scope Meo Gen 2 at the best possible price. Now, I’ll be honest. You’re getting a hell of a lot of value in this device because it’s packing the same features, the same fusion tracking technology and imaging technology as its older brother, the Flight Scope Meo Plus, but you’re getting it at practically half of the price. All of its data, from my experience, is very, very similar to the Flight Scope Meo Plus. So, it’s extremely accurate for the price point that you’re paying. you just get a couple less data parameters, so not quite as many as the MEO Plus, and you can’t add on the Pro package or the impact location feature that you can with the MEO Plus at this moment in time anyway. So, the data metrics that you get out of the box are the data metrics that you can only have, like I say, at this moment in time with the Gen 2. And on top of that, it’s not just for indoor use. You can take it outdoors as well. So whether you want to take it to the range or use it indoors in a simulator, that’s completely up to you because you’ve got that flexibility. Now, similarly to the Flight Scope Meo Plus, the MEO Gen 2 comes with no subscriptions and you even get included access to E6 Connect and being able to play some virtual golf courses. You don’t get quite as many as you do when you buy the Meboard Plus. I think you get about four less or something like that. And they are different courses as well. maybe not as well-known courses. However, you still get access to that straight out of the box. There’s no subscription fees, like we say, and you have access to those for the duration, the amount of time that you own this launch monitor, which is fantastic. But a couple of things that are different to the Meo Plus is first and foremost is the shape and the size. So, you’ll notice that the MEO Plus is more of a a rectangle in terms of horizontal. And it’s been claimed that because of the new shape of the MEO Gen 2 that it’s going to be better at reading chips and puts when you are playing simulator golf. Now, I’ve had some experience with that and I’m going to tell you more about my experience with the chipping and putting in the short game a little bit later on, so stick around for that. But also something that’s different about the Gen Two is that it’s got a much better battery life. You now get six hours worth of battery life on the Gen two compared to the MEO Plus which was nowhere near as good as that. And yeah, in my experience so far, the battery life has been pretty decent. Now, on top of all of that, you get access to the really, really good and thorough Flight Scope app, whether that is on your mobile device or on a desktop PC. The app has just had a little bit of a revamp as well, so it looks a little bit sleeker. It’s very easy to navigate initially, but then if you want to dig deeper into your data, you can go almost as deep as you need to. So, if you’re a bit of a data lover, then the Flight Scope products are going to be really good for you. Now, because you get access to the app, then you also get access to Flight Scope’s new Badger AI feature, which allows you to dig into your data that you don’t understand, and you can ask an AI coach to pick it apart for you and recommend some drills, which is an amazing little addition to the Flight Scope ecosystem. And if you fancy having a little bit of fun, then you can use the in-built camera to overlay a shot tracer on any of the shots that you hit. So, for example, if you’re off out at the driving range, then you can overlay a shot tracer to see where your ball went, you can put up your data tiles, share it to social media if that’s the sort of thing that you’re into. So, that’s a cool little addition as well. It doesn’t have to just be on the driving range either. You can do that indoors as well. Personally, I think the Flight Scope Meo Gen 2 is a really good option for you to buy if you are an amateur golfer who is starting to dig into their golf swing a little bit and hoping to improve their game in the near future because that’s definitely going to be able to do that with his accurate data. It’s also a good option if you are building a golf simulator simply because of the no subscription fees and the courses that you get included with E6 Connect. It’s also very good indoors and outdoors. So, if you do need that portability of being able to take it to the driving range before your round or doing some practice outdoors, this is going to allow you to do that. Now, probably most importantly, it’s suitable for your amateur golfers, your weekend golfers, because the data that it provides is relatively limited compared to the MEO Plus. So, if data is something that does confuse you a little bit at the moment, then this might be a really good place for you to begin. Now, let me tell you my experiences with this device and even some things that I’m not so keen on. Right now, first and foremost, we spoke earlier about the new shape and size of this device compared to the MEO Plus. Now, the MEVO Plus notoriously not very good at uh short chipping and uh putting. All right, that is frustrating if you want to use the Flight Scope Meo Plus in a golf simulator setting and play on virtual courses and compete on the likes of the simulator golf tour and all that sort of stuff can be very frustrating. There’s been numerous times where I’ve had friends around and we’ve played virtual courses using the MEVO Plus and you go and do a short chip because you’re just off the green and it doesn’t register. So, you end up having to do a really big pitch shot just to get it to divi to register on the device and then obviously it goes over the other side of the green and it’s a it’s a vicious cycle. Right. In my experience, the chipping now with the Gen two is much much better. I’ve been testing it out for the past few days. I’ve been testing out little flop shots, little chipper runs, standard chip shots from three to four yards to seven to eight, nine, 10 yards. It’s really, really good. So, I’m very impressed with the chipping. But on the other hand, the putting is not quite up to that same standard, right? The putting was always notoriously difficult with the Flight Scope Meo Plus because it’s a radar based monitor and it needs to see the ball and track the ball and your putter is probably still in the way particularly with short puts. And I did think that because of the higher profile of this Gen Two model, it might be a little bit better. In my experience, I can honestly say it’s not as good as what I would have liked it to have been. Okay, so the chipping is really good. The putting is still not very good. Like I say, in my experience, you still have to hit the put quite a lot harder than you would in real life. So, let’s say you’ve got a five foot put. You might have to hit the put about 10 foot or something for it to register and uh then it will still only travel like five feet in the game or something like that. So, it’s just it’s not very realistic. What I would advise is if you are going to get a Flight Scope product and use it as simul use it for playing virtual courses on a golf simulator, use the autoput feature still or even better just set your gimme circles to about 10 ft because if you do still want to do those long puts then it’s not so bad at picking those up. Um but yeah, anything inside 10 ft it it does still struggle from my experience. Anyway, if you’re planning to build a home golf simulator, the hardest part isn’t just choosing the right launch monitor or projector. It’s making sense of all the confusing information online. That’s why I offer a one-to-one call where I can answer your questions, clarify anything that you’re unsure about, and make sure that your build is on the right track so you don’t waste any money or make any costly mistakes. As well as that, you’ll get access to a library of clear, bite-sized video tutorials that cover every step of the build process, my ebook with exclusive discounts on products that I personally recommend, and my private community for some ongoing support throughout your build. If you’d like to learn more, the link’s in the description below. Now then on top of that, I’ve still found that the whole connectivity thing with the Flight Scope products, it just I struggle with it. I mean, I’ve tested most launch monitors on the market and in terms of getting them set up and connected and understanding the app, I’ve not had much problems. Yeah, I’m I’m I consider myself a relatively techsavvy guy, but yet again, the Flight Scope connectivity and app and settings and all of that sort of stuff, it just confuses me a little bit. So, we had this at Golf Swing Systems. We was trying to get it to connect to GS Pro. We just couldn’t get it to connect to GS Pro. Hence the reason why I ended up having to bring the device to my studios here. and I’ve finally got it connected to GS Pro after a little while. It has this new thing called streamlined Wi-Fi, which is a really good feature because it allows you to connect to the launch monitor and also connect to your Wi-Fi. So, it’s like a network mode. So, you can still access the internet on your PC or your tablet whilst you are connected to the MEO Gen 2, which is something that you couldn’t do with the MEO Plus. But this whole new streamlined Wi-Fi thing that Flight Scope have introduced is a really really positive feature. We just struggled to get it connected to GS Pro and then I bring it here and I was struggling to get it connected to the Wi-Fi initially and then I was struggling to get it connected to GS Pro again. I eventually had to just do a direct Wi-Fi connection to the MEO Gen 2 and then get it up on GS Pro and that eventually worked. But it’s just I just feel like in this day and age with all of the other launch monitors on the mark that are on the market, most of the other ones seem very simple to get connected and to get playing to get started. It might just be me. I am not overly familiar with the whole Flight Scope ecosystem. I’ll hold my hands up and I’ll admit that it’s not something that I’ve delved into over and over and over again. Um, however, like I said, I’ve tested so many launch monitors like for the first time and to get it connected and set up and hooked up with GS Pro, like I’ll use Square Golf as an example. So simple to get it started, hooked up to GS Pro, playing courses on the Square Golf software, unbelievably easy. Yeah, I just find the Flight Scope ecosystem and app a little bit more difficult to navigate. And like I say, I do consider myself a relatively techsavvy guy. Um, but I just struggle with the Flight Scope stuff. I’m sorry, Flight Scope. It might just be me, but that’s just the experience that I’ve had so far. Okay, with all of that being said, who shouldn’t buy this device? Well, you definitely shouldn’t buy this launch monitor if you have less than 16 ft of room length inside your simulator. So, if you wanted to use it indoors and you’ve got less than 16 ft of length from your impact screen to like the back of your room where your launch monitor will be placed, then this device isn’t going to work very accurately for you because it is a radar based device. And radar based devices ideally to be accurate, they’re going to need about 10 ft of ball flight from where you hit it and they’re going to need to sit about 7 ft behind you as well. So, don’t consider buying this device if you’ve got a a small indoor environment. Also, don’t buy this device if you are somebody that’s going to need that extra club data. So whether you are somebody that just loves data and you want to work on your swing or you might be a coach or a club fitter or something then the data that you get with the Gen two is quite limited because like I said earlier you cannot add on Flight Scopes Pro package and impact location uh software at this moment in time. And finally, if you are somebody that’s going to be using this device as part of a golf simulator and you want the full simulator experience of being able to put out uh from short distances and have the feel of it being relatively true to real life, um or maybe you’re somebody that wants to play on the simulator golf tour on GS Pro and the gimme circles are only 5 feet um and you still want that putting experience, then you’re not going to be able to get that with this Flight Scope Meo Gen 2 in my experience so far. Anyway, now I hope that’s given you a fair representation of my experiences with this launch monitor. Now, on the whole, is it good? Yes, it’s fantastic for the price and the value for money is absolutely fantastic. But like all launch monitors, it does have its little quirks um that you may not like. So, like I always say to people, there’s so many launch monitors on the market nowadays. You’ve got to find the one that is suited to you as best as possible. What do you think as compared to the Rapsodo MLM pro which with the lifetime subscription is the nearest competitor for indoor/outdoor use. Sounds like connectivity, cameras, and software better with Rapsodo but short chips and data display may be better on Mevo?
The putting is a bummer for this unit. As a lefty, I am pretty narrowed down on the Mevo+/Gen2. But I’d love to have a putting system that allows for that full simulator experience. Are there any other monitors I should consider? The next best option I know is to go with an overhead launch monitor, but of course the cost goes way up which isn’t in the budget right now.
