Golf Australia has appointed Rebekah Horne, Country Director of Software & Services at Apple Australia, as a Director to its Board.

Rebekah Horne joins the governing body at a significant time as Golf Australia concludes a major digital transformation, consolidating data, scoring, membership, and participation systems from over 450,000 golf club members and more than 1,900 clubs into a national platform.

Board appointment

The Golf Australia Board confirmed Horne’s appointment following a thorough recruitment process conducted by its Nominations Committee. The process included external expressions of interest, an extended series of interviews with shortlisted candidates from the Committee and the Board, and a final recommendation in line with the requirements set out in the Golf Australia Constitution. After this process, the Board formally appointed Horne as a Director.

Horne currently serves as Country Director, Software & Services at Apple Australia, overseeing consumer platforms such as the App Store, Apple Music, Apple News, and Apple Books. Her professional background comprises more than twenty years of senior leadership in technology, media, and sport, including roles as Chief Digital & Data Officer at the National Rugby League (NRL), Chief Digital Officer at Network Ten, and internationally as part of the team that developed MySpace into a global digital brand.

Digital transformation

Golf Australia’s digital strategy is marked by the launch of several new platforms, including the new Golf Australia CONNECT handicapping service, a redesigned GOLF.com.au website, and the new Golf Australia App scheduled for release on October 2. These initiatives aim to provide golfers with integrated services for tracking handicaps, booking rounds, and discovering places to play and learn, all through a single platform.

The digital transformation has occurred against a backdrop of broad growth in the sport. According to Golf Australia, more than four million adult Australians played golf in the past 12 months, and club memberships have risen by over 20% since 2020.

Welcoming statement

“We are delighted to welcome Rebekah to the GA Board. She brings deep expertise in digital innovation and customer strategy, which are vital to our future,” said Golf Australia Chair Peter Margin.

“Her experience will help guide Golf Australia’s digital transformation, making the game more accessible and inspiring more women and girls to take up and enjoy golf.”

Horne’s background in digital and technology sectors is viewed as essential for steering Golf Australia’s ongoing investment in technology and data, with the goal of improving customer experience, increasing participation, and broadening accessibility within golf across Australia.

Horne’s perspective

“Golf is in an exciting period of growth and transformation, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute. I look forward to helping Golf Australia leverage digital platforms to reach new audiences, enhance fan and player experiences, and ensure the sport is welcoming to everyone,” Horne said.

“After beginning my golf journey with my father’s old clubs in country NSW, I understand how it can connect generations and bring families together, so I’m passionate about ensuring others get to experience the joy that the sport has provided me.”

Horne’s involvement comes as Golf Australia invests in expanding the game’s reach and enhancing its appeal to younger Australians and underrepresented groups, with a particular focus on increasing female participation and making the sport accessible to all communities.

The Golf Australia Board’s decision signals a continued commitment to advancing digital infrastructure and growing the game as participation and interest reach record levels throughout the country.
