The amount of turn you have in your swing can completely change your shot shape. A greater turn in the backswing tends to promote a draw, while more turn in the down and through swing can help produce a fade. The key is understanding what your swing needs — and learning how to balance those feels for straighter, more controlled ball flights. So, if you make a turn with an exaggerated stance like this, this is going to allow us to rotate our body a lot more in the back swing. You can see how deep my arms are from here. Now, it’s going to be so much easier now to get that club path out to the right. So, this is a great experiment to do. So, close the stance a lot and let’s just hit a shot. We’ve got full swing to help us understand what we’re going to get. So, we can see big turn on the back swing equals shallow on the way down and a big hook on the shot. You look at the club path there, 6.6° 6° to the right. Great. If you’re someone who’s normally swinging over the top and slicing, if that’s your pattern, then maybe getting more turn in your back swing is a good thing to do. Conversely, if I want to get the club path more to the left, what can I do? Well, you could have less turn in your back swing, of course. But let’s just hit a shot with this exaggerated stance by getting the stance very open. So, I’ve still got my shoulder line square, but from here, I’m just going to hit one. Let’s see what the full swing numbers give us. Okay. So, we can see I thought I almost topped that one. Then it was a low rising phase. So, 4.1° to the left. So, we got a club path now which is extreme to the left. So, if we think about that piece, what we’re looking at, we’re talking about if we were to rotate more in the down swing, the club goes more out in front of us and swings more to the left. So, now you understand those components. Draw more turn in the back swing, fade, more turn in the through swing. You can actually apply one of those to the right part of your game and the right part of your swing.
