East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team shot a 1-over par 351 and finished in third place among four teams after the second, and final, round of stroke play at the St Andrews Links Collegiate, played on the Jubilee Course in St Andrews, Scotland.

Michigan State is one of four schools competing in the three-day tournament, which concludes Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Old Course, where the game began centuries ago. Over the first two rounds on Monday and Tuesday, the teams played six players (rather than five as in most college tournaments), with the best five scores counting toward the team total in stroke play.

The Spartans had been leading the field after a 4-under par 346 in Monday’s first round but were edged out in the final holes of stroke play on Tuesday afternoon.

Cal topped the field at 7-under par 693 (350-343) and Princeton finished in second place at 4-under par 696 (347-349), one shot ahead of the Spartans, who were third at 3-under par 697 (346-351). St. Andrews placed fourth at 19-over par 719 (352-367).

Junior Lorenzo Pinili, who was the individual leader at 4-under par after 18 holes, tied for second place at 4-under par 136 (66-70). He closed with an even-par 70 on Tuesday but Princeton’s Reed Greyserman fired a 6-under par 64 to move into the lead.

Pinili, who had an eagle in the second round, finished tied for fourth place in the field with eight birdies.

Junior McCoy Biagioli and graduate Ashton McCulloch had the best rounds of the day for the Spartans, each finishing at 1-under par 69. Biagioli tied for sixth place at 1-under par 139 (70-69), while McCulloch tied for ninth place at even-par 140 (71-69). McCulloch was tied for the lead with nine birdies over two rounds, while Biagioli was second among all golfers with 29 pars.

Senior Caleb Bond, who was tied for third place after a 2-under par 68 on Monday, finished in a tie for 11th place at 1-over par 141 (68-73), closing with a 3-over par 73.

Junior Lucas Acevedo tied for 14th place at 3-over par 143 (71-72) and sophomore Julian Menser tied for 20th place at 6-over par (75-71).

Wednesday’s Medal Match Play will feature Cal and Princeton in the Championship Match at the Old Course. Michigan State will play the University of St Andrews in the Consolation Match. Monday and Tuesday scores from the stoke play portion of the event determined seeding to Wednesday’s Match Play.

The Spartans tee off in their match at 3:45 a.m. (EST).

Live coverage of the St Andrews Links Collegiate will air from 9 a.m. to noon (ET), with replays each day, on The Golf Channel throughout the week, as well as Sky Sports in the United Kingdom.
