I play a couple games a year (not a great player), and this was the first time I watched the two groups in front of me converge and play together. Slowed the others so bad, that I could see the jam happening behind us to at least one maybe two holes back. They knew what they were doing too because they waited until the last two holes, so by the time the jam happened, they were leaving and basically fucking everyone else.

One group of 8 with 4 golf carts? I see it all the time at the more in-the-country courses by me. It is infuriating.
Happened to me and my wife once while playing one of our favorite local courses (it’s definitely not high end or super nice, that’s why we like playing together there). There was a group of 2 in front of us and a group of 8 in front of them. It become a huge pain in the ass, and someone ended up calling the clubhouse (not us). This isn’t the kind of course where you see employees/managers/rangers on the course during normal hours of play – like I said, it’s a casual, cheap course that I’m sure doesn’t employ enough staff to police the course. They ended up coming out and “breaking up” the group. However, the group of 2 in Front of us played through and eventually we did as well. Those two groups of four essentially continued to hang out as if they were all playing together even though I don’t think they technically were all teeing off the same hole at the same time. Still, basically ruined the first 5 holes of a 9 hole course. People suck.
Probably depends on the course. My place in Palm desert we see it all the time but it’s 7-8 guys all in their own carts… and they play faster than most 4 somes.
Never seen it. Can’t imagine how awful it’d be waiting behind them or playing with them. Nothing about that seems fun, at all.
Earlier this year i played in a step aside scramble 2 foursomes per hole. 4 against 4. I was shocked at how fast we played. There were 16-17 eightsomes. Right around 5 hrs.
Happened to me a couple weeks ago. We called the clubhouse and the Marshall came out. Split them up and had my group play through. He also followed them for the next 4 holes.
I have seen this before and it’s usually a bachelor party or special event. I usually just ask to play through.
We allow 5 somes but it’s required to play at normal or above pace
Had a family of 8 do this ahead of us one round. Longest round I ever played. On the 18th hole one of the teenage kids walked past our cart and asked “is this course always this slow?” we were so angry we didn’t even know how to respond, it was like he was gaslighting us.
Former public course clubhouse worker here. Yep… Happens more often than you’d think. Group of friends will make a couple tee times and think “we should all play together, we’ll be just as fast” Nope. every single time its happened, it has never been fast.
We’ll of course get a call complaining about the slow play and my response to the guys pairing up is “how many of you have played golf before” They’ll respond blah blah blah and I’ll just say, “have you ever seen anywhere ever that offers 8somes?” and they’ll get the point right there and split.
I get that you want to play with the boys and have fun, but I’d rather have 8 guys not have the most fun they could have over 60 customers throughout the day complain to me that their round was 6 hours.
Never in real life but it’s a daily occurrence on this sub.
Only time I ever saw a massive group was john Rahm at whisper rock and those guys played faster than my 4some lol . At least 8 guys
Side note – on the range that day before my round I was hitting tin cup style shanks in between Martin Kaymer, John Rahm, and Paul Casey- so embarrassing ….they barely even noticed me lol
fuckin idiots.
Some dudes are so fucking lost on the course.
I’d’ve run them off the course. Never seen 8, but i have seen 5 and 6 playing together…I read them the riot act
I’m hitting into this group for sure
Where are the Marshalls these days. I see this more and more. For whatever reason single group is holding everybody up without any Marshalls on the course. I used to do marshalling and it’s a minimum wage job which is fine because I got free golf. So if you look at it that way it’s going to cost a course 150 bucks all in for them to get more people moving through the course.
I had a group of buddies buy out 6 tee times for an 8some
SIX
The 4some behind tees off 25 minutes early, scrambles then is pissed about pace of play.
Happened to me this year. Only employee working the pro shop was a maybe 18 year old kid. They told him to fuck off and they played the whole day as 8. They kept selling them beers. Stop serving them and kick them off the course. Got a full refund thankfully.
All the time and it’s annoying af – never in 30 years of playing have I encountered a group of 8 moving just as fast as two foursomes
I was once on the first tee at a local 9-hole par-3 course, supposed to be grouped with a 3-some. Turns out the 3 were with the foursome behind us and they all wanted to go off as 7…no worries I guess, expecting I’d tee off solo in front of them. Then one dude in the threesome tried to say no.
I gave him a look like he was stupid – which he was – and said “you’re really serious right now that you’re gonna play as a 7some and not let me go off first as a single in front of you? I’ll just go to the clubhouse and ask them…”.
Then one of the more level headed guys chimed in with a reasonable “of course – you go first”. I was finishing the 4th hole as they walked off the first green.
@$$hats
What I don’t get is why anyone would subject themselves to this.
Leave aside the fact that you’re being an ass to all groups behind you.
Why would you subject yourself to having to wait for seven other people to tee off? Why would you wait for seven people to make their approach shots before you make yours? Why would you wait for seven other people to make their putts? Why would you do this to yourself for 18 holes?
Imagine being the best driver in the group and having two or three guys slicing it into the woods. Imagine having to endure seeing seven other people shank it, fat it, whatever, before you can whip out your own club.
I don’t care how much you love golf. It can’t even be fun to be out there for, what? 6 hours? 7 hours? More? It must be fucking grueling. I’d hate it. By the turn you must be so fucking done with everyone else.
So anyways…I started hitting into them
Call the marshal and split them up. Or, play through and be fine.
I immediately notify the ranger. There is no way I’m waiting behind that.
Yeah, that’s just because the world is about them, not you. Try having dinner with them.
Yup, group of 8 followed by 5 (2 kids) and a group of 4 after. Tee time had noone booked for 40 mins before mine but caught up to all that on hole #4 on a 12 hole course.
North Hampton?
