Wedge play is one of the single most difficult parts of the game because not only do you have to control the strike, you also have to think about how hard you got to hit it. With a full shot, you just have to stand up and hit a full swing every time. With wedge play, there’s much more finesse and skill involved because you can do everything perfect from a technical perspective and you can still hit the ball 30 yards over the back of the green. I’m going to help you today to learn to bridge that gap and develop real finesse with your wedge play so that you can have wonderful distance control and hit way more greens. Give yourself some birdie chances. Before we get started, if this is your first time watching one of my lessons, please consider subscribing to the channel so that I can keep helping you play better golf and check out the description for a free in-depth swing analysis. A few years ago, I thought I had the answer to wonderful distance control in the wedge play when I heard of the clock face system. This is essentially a system where the length of the swing you have dictates how far the golf ball goes. A lot of tour players use this system and it is very wonderful because it is a way of controlling distance, but it lacks one thing. You could be exceptional at controlling the length of the swing and have it the exact same every single time and you can still hit infinitely different distances purely by changing the tempo that you’re swinging at. So, if we have a swing where we bring the left arm parallel with the ground, so like a 9:00 swing in the clock face system, and we have it 9:00 on the way through, and we repeat that every time, but we do it at very different paces. Well, now you’re going to get very different distances. So, controlling length of swing is one thing, but controlling tempo is a whole another part, and it’s way more difficult for you to get instant feedback on how fast the club has actually traveled. So rather than us having a 7:30, an 8:00 p.m., a 9:00, a 10:00, an 11:00 length swing, which introduces loads of difficulty and actually swing at the length you’re trying to and requires a lot of golf balls to be hit. I prefer to work on two swing lengths with every wedge. We have a full swing. How far does your golf ball go with a a full out wedge? And then we have a 9:00 swing. So, left arm parallel to the ground to right arm parallel to the ground. These are our only swing lengths. With our 9:00 swing, we need to develop that distance control. How do we know how fast we should swing it with that swing length? The way that we train this is with a metronome. I like to select one that is 60 beats per minute. I find this to be a wonderful pace. When you’re practicing, get your headphones in and get a metronome playing and practice timing up your swing with the 9:00 swing to the metronome. So, we address the ball. We listen for the tick. And as the first tick sounds, we move the club away. As the second tick sounds, we hit the ball. This is a really nice way to start to train a consistent tempo. So, first tick, we move the club away. Second tick, we strike the ball. So the point of contact with the ball is on the second tick. Club moves back first tick. Club impacts the ball on the second tick. So every swing is 9:00 left arm parallel to right arm parallel or as close as you reasonably can. But the key is timing up the swing with that metronome. So tick one, tick two, 60 beats per minute. Wonderful sort of pace to uh to have. Now, it doesn’t have to be 60, and that’s absolutely fine. It can be 50, it can be 80, it can be 90. As long as you find a way to actually quantify how fast you’re swinging it. If you can do that, you can control your distances. I’d recommend hitting a bunch of balls with your earphones in, working on that left arm parallel to right arm parallel swing. Can you time it up with that metronome at whatever pace you choose, but be consistent with it within practice sessions. I would then practice how far does that swing length, that 9:00 swing length at the 60 beats per minute metronome tempo or whatever tempo you choose, how far does that ball actually go with each of your different wedges. Write that down. Get a little sheet of paper, write it down on the paper. Now, you should have a full swing number for each of your wedges and you have got a partial swing number for each of your wedges. That 9:00 swing at whatever tempo you so choose. Now, this is going to give you a wide variety of distances you’ll be able to hit the ball. And in between these distances, we like to have it a little bit more feel-based. So, let’s say that your 9:00 swing with your 50° wedge carries 50 yards. Perfect. And a full swing maybe goes 90 y. Well, we’re left with 70 yards. Perhaps our 46° wedge can get there with a 9:00 swing. Or maybe it’s just a bit short. Well, we probably just have to add a little bit to that 46 degree wedge or go somewhere between the middle of the 50° with the 9:00 swing and the full swing. Somewhere in the middle of the two, just try and feel that out. This I find to be a much better way of controlling distance because there’s less variables and we allow ourselves to develop the skill of controlling distance rather than restricting it to numerous different swing lengths where we don’t actually practice the tempo we swing at. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments just down below. Is this something you’ve ever heard of or considered? Uh, do you currently use a clock face system? How do you find it? Or are you more of a feel-based player? And I like to try and blend the two so we have a little bit of a system, but then it’s also very field-based. Thanks again for watching and make sure you subscribe so you never miss a free lesson and I can keep helping you play better golf. I play each wedge with 2 different swings. Full swings and light swings. Gives me 8 different distances.

Wrote this comment before the 2 minute mark.. 😂
