Alycia and Reynard Wedding Vows
I met Rey when a few of our mutual friends
were out having a few drinks at a bar in North Bridge. I decided to leave midway and he
and Jian Hui insisted on walking me to my car. I was in my independent woman era, so I politely
declined until Jian Hui said he had left something in his car and needed to grab it and was heading
in the same direction anyway. So Rey walked me to my car while Jian Hui, hung, walking slightly
behind us.. sneaky. A year later, we bumped into each other again, hanging out with mutual
friends. We were playing games at Leo’s house. When Rey shyly asked me out um if I’d
like to go out for some coffee sometime, that coffee turned into a six-hour date.
It changed from just a coffee to a mini golf session, a beer session, a sunset walk,
and then a dinner. Umm.. I was really tired. We then spent most of the summer time going
on picnics or going out with our friends on the weekend. And now we’re here. Reynard, I
knew I wanted to spend my life with you after the years we’ve spent together going through the
challenges of everyday life. We took our time to bring each other into our very individual
lives and built a sense of camaraderie, vulnerability, and adoration that I’ve not felt
before you. You’re intelligent and progressive um with your own world views. You’re good at
most sports, but also so naturally clumsy. You’re committed to health and fitness and
your own road. You’re peaceful, gentle, and placid until you decide to troll one of your
close friends (Chester), which is concerningly the only time I hear you laugh your loudest. You’re
annoying. You unconsciously eat all the snacks when they’re stressed at work. You’re strange. Um,
you headbutt me on purpose with your big head. Um, and you still surprise me sometimes just when
I think I’ve got you figured out. But before you came along, I only kept oyster sauce
in my kitchen. Um, and you introduced me to fish sauce, dashi, harissa, and at
least another 20 herbs and spices. Uh, you marinate and season everything we cook
together perfectly. You even learned Cantonese cooking to make my favorite steamed fish.
We’re silly and we play together a lot, but you also challenge my thoughts and you don’t let
me get away with being ignorant about the world. You make me feel hopeful and you pick me up when
I’m feeling jaded. When I’m completely gassed from work, you tell me to sit down on the couch and
you take over. You embrace me and encourage me when I’m chasing growth, but also accept me when
I’m not. I also love how you sing me the roasty chestnut song every morning on Christmas morning.
We might have started with a six-hour date and a little book club for just the two of us. But it’s
all these things that have led me to this moment right now. So from now on, I promise to hold
your hand when we walk together. I’ll wake up to you every morning that I’m not on site. I’ll um
look forward to sharing a morning coffee with you, every morning. When I find delicious food and
drink, you’ll be the first person I share. When something exciting happens day by day, you’ll
be the first person I spill the tea to. I’ll keep looking forward to discussing books we choose to
read together. I’ll step up as much as I can when you’re feeling down, fatigued, or stressed.
I vow to prioritize you. I vow to listen to your hardships and celebrate your triumphs. I
vow to cherish your family as much as you do. And as we change over time, I promise to
work on our respect and trust for each other. I vow I promise to appreciate you and
I promise to be truthful and faithful to you. Hard to follow Alycia. It was 5 years ago that we met at
Henry Summers. I thought it was going to be just another night out, but little
did I know I would end up meeting when we first met. I knew nothing
about what it meant to be in a relationship. I remembered in our first
and second date I was so nervous that I was sweating non-stop which now
you’ve assured me that it’s “cute”. I have learned lots over these years and you were
patient with me and now here we are confessing our love to each other in front of our most
loved ones about to become husband and wife. You’ve asked me multiple times, what does it
mean to be married? Honestly, that’s not an easy question to answer. And over the past year,
I’ve really pondered it. I think marriage is about promising to work on and to prioritize our
relationship. I don’t believe we are here together because of fate or that we were destined to be
together. I believe we are here because we chose to be here. We chose to work on our relationship,
some days are harder than others, but we keep choosing each other. We work on it because what we
have together is truly special. One of the things that makes it so special is how we enjoy the
simple things, like going for a walk or having a picnic and the not so simple things like driving
around at night trying to find bears in Japan. We simply enjoy each other’s company no matter what
the activities. I also love how we’re able to be silly with each other. Whether it’s you calling me
silly things, which is um too embarrassing to say here, or when we draw mustaches on each other’s
faces. Around you, I feel I can truly be myself. When you are near, you bring color into my life.
Looking at your bright smile or silly and cute faces that you make brings me joy. You are smart,
strong, thoughtful, and kind and beautiful. I love your confidence, your commitment to your values,
and the way you care so deeply about those around you. I appreciate how you take care of your family,
and how you are always there whenever I need you. My vows today are honest and true, just like
the values you’ve helped me instill in me. I promise that I will always have time for you,
to keep learning about you and to never take you for granted. I promise to be by your side and
support you whenever you need me. I promise to listen to you even when it’s in the middle
of the night and you wake me up by saying, “Are you awake? And you want to talk?” and then
proceed to fall asleep whilst you’re talking to me. Because I know then that you can confide
in me and you have found your home and that makes me the luckiest man alive. I love you Alycia
Chan and I can’t wait to build our lives to you.
