STOCKTON, Calif. — The Sacramento State men’s golf team finished in fifth place at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational on Saturday at The Reserve. The Hornets shot 277 to finish 1-under par in the third round and were 8-under par for the tournament. The team was led by Max Thomas’ 67 during the day and received a top-10 finish from Mason Benbrook who tied for fifth overall.

Thomas made the biggest move on the team, rising 23 spots on the scoreboard to finish tied for 17th. The sophomore had five birdies without a bogey during his round and matched his second-lowest as a Hornet. Thomas was 2-under on front nine with birdies on the par-4 third and par-5 sixth. On the back nine, he birdied Nos. 11, 14 and 16. His three-round score of 73-72-67-212 left him 4-under par.

Benbrook shot 72 in the final round and earned his first collegiate top five finish. The senior was even through the front nine with one birdie and one bogey. He was able to post three birdies over the final nine holes but matched those with a bogey and a double bogey. Benbrook finished five strokes behind

Gabriel Smith had the highlight of the day as the senior aced the 182-yard par-3 fourth hole. Smith opened his round with a bogey on No. 1 and then moved to 1-under following the hole-in-one. After four pars, he had a double bogey on the par-4 ninth to make the turn at 1-over. He was even over his final nine holes with a bogey on No. 11 and a birdie No. 15.

Zach Mate completed the team total with a 75. Mate parred his first 10 holes and finished with 15 pars and three bogeys.

Jake Aberle shot 75 on Saturday and tied for 46th place overall. Aberle’s third round was comprised of two birdies and five bogeys.

Zach Matzke had the second-lowest round for a Hornet on Saturday. Matzke, who was competing as an individual, began his round on the 10th hole and birdied his first three holes. He added birdies on the par-5 16th and par-4 18th and was bogey free on the back nine to stand at 5-under. His first bogey of the day came on the par-3 fourth but was equalized by a birdie on the par-5 sixth. Matzke remained at 5-under until his final two holes where he had a bogey on No. 7 and a double bogey on No. 9.
