The 2025 Bay Current Classic, once known as the Zozo Championship, is the PGA Tours Lone Stop in Japan, and it’s already bringing drama at Yokohama Country Club. After the opening round, the leaderboard is stacked with a three-way tie at four under and eight players just one shot back. Strong winds gusting up to 30 mph tested every player. This limited field event features 78 golfers, no cut, and plenty of star power chasing the title. Max Graaserman set the tone with a brilliant bogey-free 63, capped by a curling birdie on his final hole. That put him 12 under and four shots clear. Smiling afterward, he said, “Everything felt good. A couple loose swings, but overall, I had a lot of looks and did a lot of things well. I just need to keep doing what I’m doing. Grazeman, last year’s runnerup, looks ready to claim his first PGA Tour victory in Japan. But the day’s biggest buzz came from Kazuki Higa. The Japanese standout lit up the front nine, pouring in eight birdies for a dazzling eight under 28. The crowd roared as the #59 watch began. Higa, who won on the Asian tour earlier this year, opened with a 72 on day one. Few saw this explosive comeback coming. Another story capturing hearts belongs to Taigok Kobayashi. The 22-year-old amateur is living the dream in his PGA Tour debut just four years ago. He was a standard bearer for Hideki Matsuyama when Matsuyama won this same event. After earning his spot through the Hideki Matsuyama amateur challenge, Kobayashi posted a 1 over 72, proving he can hang with the pros. Defending champion Nikico Echavaria returns joined by Hideki Matsuyama, Xander Chauffel, Colin Morawa, Windham Clark, and Adam Scott. Tony Fina withdrew earlier in the week and was replaced by Sam Ryder. Matsuyama and Moriawa, both past champions, are chasing another title on home soil. This year also marks the tournament’s debut at Yokohama Country Club, a stunning course redesigned by Bill Core and Ben Krenshaw. The par 71 layout stretches over 7,300 yds, blending holes from both the west and east courses. The Bay Current Classic may have a new name, but its heart remains the same. Worldclass golf under Japan’s crisp autumn skies. With half the tournament still to go, Max Graaserman leads the chase, Kazuki Higa is charging, and Taigo Kobayashi is living his dream. The weekend ahead promises pressure, passion, and maybe a brand new champion in the land of the rising sun.
