This year it happen twice to Indonesian players. They even couldn't challange. First, in XD match at Sudirman cup. Second, today in WD match in Malaysia Master. BWF aint changing

For the audience's point of view, they do feel their own frustration not only because of seeing Lin Dan quit already, but of the expensive amount of money they have spent from their budget and savings just so they could watch Lin Dan perform out of his character in his ability.
Both perspectives are understandable and natural to feel. We cannot judge both negatively.
