Xander Schauffele is back in action this week at the Baycurrent Classic in Japan, his first start since the Ryder Cup.
Schauffele was the top scorer for Team USA with 3 points, but it wasn’t enough to stop Europe from winning at Bethpage Black.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, he reflected on the heartache of defeat and addressed the fan abuse directed at European players. Schauffele admitted the U.S. team simply needed to play better for their supporters.
👉 Do you agree with Schauffele’s comments?
Xander, you’re making your seventh consecutive start in this Japan event. Can we get some comments on what it’s like to be back? Yeah, it’s uh very cool to come to a new city in Japan. Um I think everyone’s really excited to come back. Um and just looking forward to uh to a good week of golf. And in six previous starts, you’ve earned a couple of top 10s. This week, we’re at a new venue venue, Yokohama Country Club. You just finished your ProAm. Can we just get some thoughts on the the new course and the conditions out there heading into the week? Yeah, course conditions very mint. It’s very nice. Um hopefully the typhoon doesn’t come in too strong with rain and wind. Um but yeah, the course is in in in great shape uh for for the tournament. And you’re making your first PGA Tour start since BMW Championship. I know we have a Ryder Cup in there, a couple weeks off. Can you just some comments on where your game is right now? Yeah, the RDER Cup was was a lot of fun. Uh losing was unfortunate, but our team had a ton of fun together and a short short rest at home uh before coming here. So, I I felt like I played well at the RER Cup and looking forward to continuing the good form. At this time, we’ll open it up for questions. If you can just raise your hand, we’ll get a microphone over to you. Hi Alexander. Um I think the the atmosphere at this tournament this week, the crowds will be a little bit different from how they were at the RDER Cup. Um looking back at the RDER Cup fans a couple of weeks after now that some of the emotion has gone out of it. How do you think the fans behaved? Do you think they crossed the line? Do you think that they were think what happened was acceptable? It’s a it’s a tough tough tough think. I I’ve heard several things about a few of the things that were said. Um the guys I played with uh Havland and Bob the first day um or against sorry and then uh John and Sep. Um and I played John and individuals uh and then John and Tier again I believe. So there were yeah I mean there were some you know unsavory things said at certain times but um you know I I really wish we could have played better to have them you know cheer cheer for us a bit a bit more. Um New York’s a tough place to play for anyone. Um so I even got a few uh comments to to play better. Uh so I’m you know I’m not taking much personally um when it comes to sort of what fans say. Fore! Foreign! Foreign! BS. forchech. [Music] So he would like to ask questions about uh Japanese players playing in PJ tour and and what’s your impression of those players playing there and also what do you think will be important for them to be by um like the top top on the leaderboard? How what do you think it will be important for them? Yeah, there’s several strong Japanese players uh on both tours. You know, I think the Japan tour is is one of the best tours in the world as well. Um it has been for quite some time, always in the top three. And uh you know, a lot of players have played on on on both the US uh and even DP World Tour as well. So clearly um there’s no one style that sort of fits fits the players here. I think if anything um we are in because we’re in in Japan, I think the US players have to try to adapt more to playing Japanese style golf. Um this Yokohama Country Club, for example, you’re not going to try and overpower it. You have to be very precise. And I think the best attribute for most Japanese players is is that they’re very precise and very accurate. S they but I think he wants to know how the those Japanese like Masyama and Oino Ka playing in the PJ 4. Yeah. What do you think about them for and also what do you think it’s important for them to play on in the PJ tour? Oh oh oh sorry sorry. Oh yeah. Um I mean I think they’re you know besides Hideki you know uh Theo has played over the US we have a few of the young guys uh I know Hatsune and Kanaya’s is on the USPGA tour now so I think it’s a big adjustment coming over to play in the US and I think they’ll play they’ve already played pretty well and and I think once they get a little bit more comfortable it’s always hard to play away from home Japan is very far away from the United States. So I think you just give them a little bit more time to to get acclimated, to get comfortable, and once they feel like US is a little bit more like home, I think they’ll start playing even even better. Any additional questions? I have one more for you, Xander in English. Um, what is one thing that you want to figure out most in your game during the FedEx Cup fall before January? I think gaining trying to gain a little bit of confidence uh would be the biggest thing. I think it was a a tricky year with injury and sort of lack of starts early on. So, gaining some confidence and that would that would probably be the number one thing. just gain a little bit going into the new year and try and get back into good form. Confidence Okay, thank you so much for the time, Xander. Good luck this week. Thank you.
