On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Subpar, Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz are joined by 2025 U.S. Mid-Amateur Champion Brandon Holtz for an exclusive interview. The former Illinois State University basketball player talks his transition from Division 1 hoops to professional golf, being familiar with Augusta National thanks to his dad’s lifetime Masters badges and when he realized Kevin Streelman was caddying for his opponent in the Mid-Am championship match.

Uh some awesome winners out there. We’re going to start with Steven Fisk, who won at the Sanderson Farms Championship, beating Garrick Higo by two shots. Played incredible coming down the stretch. Um but a guy that was 135th in the FedEx Cup, now moves to 65th. Two-year exemption, PJ Championship. The players, a lot comes with it, but uh pretty impressive performance by him. And this is what these fall events are all about. Yeah. I mean, you know, coming off the RDER Cup, a lot of the big names aren’t there. Rasmus showed up down there. T3, God bless him, by the way, going to Japan this week, too. So, he’s logging some miles. But, I mean, the golf world is just not getting a lot of attention right now. But on the flip side of that, like the stories that are actually taking place in terms of how they change people’s lives and careers are like, you know, bigger than anything we got in in signature events. Like if Scotty wins his sixth event or his seventh event of the year, like what does it really change? You don’t need the money doesn’t do anything for him. We already know he’s the best player in the world. He’s already going to be on tour till he wants to stop playing golf. These are like guys 135 grinded to get there rookie year. It’s like keep a job at this point. And now the fact that he wins um two-year exemption, all the stuff can take a breath of fresh air for the first time. Also, like you mentioned, the way he closed that out like burning four the last six with everything on the line. And I don’t know what he needed to finish to just get inside the top 100. But to go ahead and picked off that first win, like those are those are these things matter a lot and they’re just they’re not going to get the attention. Football’s back, but still some some really cool stories. Got his attention and it uh it changed his career path. No doubt. Also, little shout out to Taylor Montgomery who finished tied for sixth. Had just 94 putts in four days. Taylor, my friend, how about we hit a few greens out there. You’re rolling the rock pretty nice. Just a fairway. Maybe a fairway or two. We went through his driving stats, just actually just T Green stats earlier on radio and it’s like I mean he’s won 50 plus in tons of stuff and then every putting category 1 2 1 3 4 one. If he could just find something in the fairway. It’s honestly though remarkable that he could finish that high given where he’s hitting it off the tea. It’s crazy. Off the tea this week wasn’t even the the problem. It was the greens in regulation. I mean there were 67 guys that made the cut. He was 67th in greens in regulation. I texted him Saturday night. I was like, “Hey, dude. Uh 18 greens, 2530 ft. you’re going to shoot something crazy low. You’re the best putter in the on the planet. These greens are some of the best on the PGA Tour. Um obviously some weeks you just don’t don’t have it with the iron game, but it’s incredible to finish dead last in greens in regulation and finish top six. Contend more or less. Yeah. 18 greens, 20 25 ft. Why do you ever tell me to do that? Yeah, you don’t put it like could use that could use that little piece of I don’t have to if I’m hitting it 25 ft. It’s true. Every hole. But yeah, uh big week. He by the way finished 73rd in the corner tour ring. So, he’s got that, but now he goes in the fall and hopefully can make a move. What’s he 129? I believe like 148. He is not playing the Cornferry Tour Championship. So, getting ready. He’ll be in Utah. That top 10 will carry over to that. Good course for him out there, too. Why? I don’t think there’s any trees. Come on, Taylor. Wide open. Hit some goddamn greens. Um, all right. Over on the PJ Tour, champions, very popular winner. How about it, Tommy Two Gloves Gainy picking up a win after Monday qualifying. his fourth successful Monday qualifier in his five attempts since turning 50. I think he’s been 50 for like six weeks or so, seven weeks. Yeah. Not very long. Very. Yeah. 50. And he’s the youngest winner obviously, but yeah, he’s only been out there. It’s been like two months since he’s been But moved up to 37th in the Charles Schwab Cup. And his plan, we had him on our radio show earlier today. I was I’m going to Monday qualify until I get exempt status out there. And Q school is has gone away now for the PJ tour champions, which is tragic. unbelievable in my opinion. So, Monday qualifying was really the only way to get out there and he goes and picks out a win. Picks up a win, which just awesome, man. So pumped for him, great character, very popular guy in the game, but uh a guy that’s going to be a force out there on the PJ tour champions. He wants it, man. That’s the thing. I think it’s like there’s a big aspect of like who wants it out there. That’s why I can’t believe they got rid of Q school. It’s like those guys that have been waiting, they aren’t fully exempt out there. I mean, we got buddies from around here. One of them’s a major champion on the on champions tour. came out of qualifying school. How about Stephen Aler? How’s that? Stevie Allen. Q school guys. Like these aren’t guys that just get a card and hang out. Like they’ve win on I can’t believe they got rid of that. But Tommy Gayy, dude, when you really sit back and like what a gnarly story for him. Like didn’t grow up at the country club. Doesn’t have a wasn’t looking at his swing on video. Didn’t have any of the [ __ ] that the kids have nowadays and just found a way to get really good at golf. Now he’s won on the cornfairy tour multiple times, PJ Tour and Champions Tour. There’s not a ton of guys that have that have done that. He was one of the guys that made it through Q school way back in the day. And that was one of those great characters that went from I can’t even remember what he did for a living, but it wasn’t the most glamorous job in the world. Air something with like air, not air conditioners, air heating systems or something like that. Sure. Yeah. But I was saying he went and he was on the freaking PGA Tour. That’s what was so cool about Q school when it was 2025 cards back in the day. I missed that. I hate now that they’re taking away PJ Tour Champions Q school which was just right down the road here at TPC Scottsdale, the champions course. Um, it was a hard five. I mean, it was dramatic coming down the stretch. Some crazy [ __ ] would always happen. But congrats to Tommy Gay, man. We’re very, very happy. Tommy Gayy, uh, Big Break version. Remember that? I mean, we’re going way back when the Big Break was incredible back in the day. They had some characters. That’d be a good show to reboot right about now, you know? Would you go on it? Uh, I think my Big Break I think I’m not looking for a big break anymore, but I’d help with the show. Okay. It’d be fun. All right. Uh let’s get into some other stuff non-golf related before we get zoned in. Um you uh there was a lot of football going on this past weekend. Dude, I caught the bug that everybody else has had when I got back from the RDER Cup. Hard to believe traveling non-stop since April. I got sick. I’m surprised it took this long, but uh I was on the couch Saturday and Sunday. I I never left my house except to go for a walk. I never got in my You go for walks, too. Yeah. Get a little vitamin D, bud. A little walk around the neighborhood. take a little stroll. Trying to feel better. Trying to get this [ __ ] out that you you got me sick at the REDR Cup. I got a lot of stuff. Yeah, stay away. Um, but football was unbelievable. One thing we got to talk about, the Arizona Cardinals, our hometown team here. I mean, you’re a Bronco guy. I’m a Cowboy guy, but I do root for the Cardinals. It’s our team here in Arizona. What a disaster that was. 21-3. Looked like they were just cruising. No problem other than it looked like Kyler Murray might have been getting evaluated for a concussion after a snap hit him in the head. I have no idea what happened. It was the messiest game of all. But they still should have just cakewalked. Well, I’ll let you because he’s a TCU Horn Frog. So, I’ll let you do the honors. Had a big game in that stadium against the Michigan Wolverines. Had a run about that length, by the way. Except the only difference is he held on to the ball back then to go. That was unbelievable. There was some stat that went up like when he was running that ball like the live bet if you look at the probability stuff they were 99.9% chance to win that game. I don’t know how this keeps happening dude. Normally it’s college kids it’s like they get too fired up. They’re already think about their celebration and they drop the ball but like you see it once and I feel like every coach goes in there is like if you ever do this like you’re done. And at the pro level you don’t see it much. I when I first saw it I was like oh my god that’s close. But I thought he had crossed it and then they go down the line he didn’t. And then by the way, they could have won it four other times after that, but all the [ __ ] went wrong. I mean, the pick when threw that then they got up, tried to run with it, fumbled it. Two Cardinals could have just laid down on the ball and it would have been nothing. They try to pick it, kick it in the end zone. Titans recover it. I mean, it’s just everything that could go wrong. It’s one of the worst losses I think I could ever Thank God I didn’t bet on that. That would be a That would have been a tough one. The Surviv God bless you if you’re in the Survivor pool and had the Arizona Cardinals. Well, I’ll break it down for you. Um, one of the casinos up in Vegas runs a big survivor pool. Thousand dollar entry. They get a bunch of interest like I mean the the payout’s huge between the Arizona Cardinal game and the LA Rams who lost on a last second field goal to the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday. There was 8,600 left in the contest going in. Over 6,100 I believe were on the Rams and the Cardinals combined. Wow. And I bet the last week, the week, week prior to that, probably the Browns killed another 3,000 of them. There been some that thing’s gotten whittleled down quickly. I mean, that was a straight mess. I’ll tell you another game that could have been a disastrous one. Vikings over in London, which by the way, I hate that we move games over there. How about the field goal that hit the cable that holds the camera, whatever they call it, the spider cam, whatever, and just go straight sideways. I was watching it live. I was like, that was I’ve never seen a football really fly like that. I was like, “How hard is the wind blown?” But it went just it was so immediate. It went right. It turns out hits the cable. Oh, just a multi-billion dollar league, biggest business in sports, and like we can’t get a we got field goals that are hitting wires. And no one even brings it up. They said the refs didn’t have a good advantage on the replay. I was like, “What about the kicker?” You point out like I didn’t shank that. What just happened? How does that happen? What if Scotty was on 18 at Augusta and his balls just flying down the fairway all of a sudden just bounds into the trees? be like, “Ah, no want to take a look at that.” Well, CBS would never have a camera that’s in play, right? Well, not Yeah, of course not. CBS, whatever Jack operation was running this Vikings game. That’s why Home Move Games to London, too. They’re probably not even ready for it. Every replay booth, unless they were asleep, like, how does the replay booth not see? Like, we saw it on the camera angle. Everything just it hit the wire, went dead, right? Um, I saw it with a naked eye just watching. I was like, weird. Yeah. Stop the game, guys. Uh, we got a little issue here. Take a look. Yep. like, “Yep, that hit the wire. Never had this happen in the history of the NFL, but guess what? Rekick.” Yeah, they go to win that game, but that could have cost one, too. I mean, that there’s some weird stuff weird stuff going on out there. Well, let’s get zoned in with our friends over at Zone Nicotine. And this just blows my mind, SE, because as we mentioned, the RDER Cup was just last week. The boys were celebrating after a massive win over the Americans once again. Um, not many celebrate harder than Terrell Hatton. And it looked like Bobby McIntyre was having a rather good time. When I told you on our SiriusXM show last week that four of the Rider Cupers from Europe were actually playing that week, you said, “What? Are you out of your mind? What are you doing?” Yeah. The Dunnh Hill is a massive tournament on the DP World Tour. Uh, Terrell Hatton has an unbelievable record there. But come the end of the week, it got shortened because of some insane winds. Like play got stopped because of wind and rain. Dustin Johnson hit a three-wood from 192 yards and he topped it. But guys were not let’s ease up on the 3-wood topping especially in the wind. Guys were not able to get home to 350 yard par4s. Like it was just insane. But they canceled it. They they shortened it to 54 holes and Bobby McIntyre and Terrell Hatton finished two after being at the Rder Cup all week. Don’t mind jet lag. Don’t mind being hung over. Don’t probably don’t really want to be at the golf course that much after having a week like that. They go out there and do that. They were zoned in. That was fun to watch. The week after that, I would think you want like a tournament like the AMX where it’s just perfect weather, no wind. I’ll go play and if I happen to get hot, great. If not, just get me out of here. Then have to go out there and grimy Bobby McIntyre put something. I was like four towels, five gloves, you know, today. It just looked miserable. I cannot believe that they end up one and two. I would have bet a lot of money on none of those Ryder Cupers playing. By the way, Matt Fitzpatrick finished 21st as did as did Fleetwood. So, I mean, it was like pretty good showing um all around. There was big talk after the opening round and DJ’s 64 minus 8 like, “Oh, you think that would have worked over at Beth Page.” I was like, “Here we go. Here we go. If any of them play good, that’s going to be the talk. Forget everything that happened leading up to that.” But I think DJ, he had a tough one. I think I think he finished 71st if I’m not mistaken. Yeah, it went good. Um he also like tried to finish on Saturday after they blew the horn said they couldn’t hear the horn and end up making triple on the hole he finished. It was a disaster that tough. But Terrell, by the way, he will never skip the Dunnh Hill. I think in his last eight starts, this is just going off the top of my head. Three wins, three seconds, and like a seventh and an 11th. So they had a first at the Dunnh Hill, a second at the Dunnh Hill, and a third at Sanderson. Yeah. Rasma guard. No RDER Cup hangover for those. And now he’s getting on a plane and going over to Japan. Just a little Just a little jaunt. Yeah, I’m just happy to be home. I guess he likes money. He’s one of those that likes money. Well, let’s do some gambling here. Fanatic sports book. Make sure you download it. Follow along with us. Uh I sucked last week. Alex Smallley. Um what the hell happened? You finished almost last. Thought did you have him at top 150? Yeah, I won that. Okay, good. You there. Another one. Yeah. So, uh that didn’t work out too well. Florida State I thought was sneaky going to back door cover there. Get by Miami. That last drive I was like, well, touchdown here. We got a chance. They decide to kick the field goal and go for the onside. Another rule in football. Let’s D. The onside sucks. We got to do something different. I mean, the onside conversion rate’s like 7%. What do you want to see? I don’t know. What the XFL? You remember the XFL when they used to just like drop or they put it on like a thing and two guys just sprint for it. That was sweet. That was pretty sweet. Yeah. Yeah. That was almost a grease cover though. Yeah. The way the NFL on side now it’s basically impossible. Uh but I lost you. Uh you hit a winner in football. The Virginia Cavaliers. Shout out to y’all. going out right. It was close to a double whammy with Max top 10. Had a great Saturday. Finished third. I may have had the odds wrong. Still would have been a chicken sandwich, by the way. Still would have been a chicken sandwich. Uh I might have just won a little bit less than I had advertised. I have a hard time distinguishing between top five and top 10 on the odds. Yeah, it’s crazy how it says win. This maybe why I’m not a great gambler. Top 10, top 20. It’s somehow you always read the top five off the top. Changed not long ago. And by not long ago, I mean a couple months ago, I think. and I just haven’t quite um picked it up. Anyways, he almost had it. Well, this week we’re going to give you a three team college football parlay and also our favorite bets from the Bay Current Classic, which is a new sponsor over there over in Japan. Pretty good field. Colin Morawa, Xander Schoff teing up, Hideki Matsyama. Um for my golf, I’m going with top 10. I’m I’m going to see if these RDER Cup guys can keep this going because this guy won in his last start, but he didn’t play at the Ryder Cup. who was a vice captain and he’s going to go over there. He’s going to hit 9 billion balls and be ready to go. Alex Norin, top 10 plus 210. Okay. Yeah. One last time out. Probably didn’t do a lot of ball hitting at Beth Page. Um by the way, future guest of the program, talked to him at the RDER Cup. He said, “Absolutely. We’re going to do this.” Great dude. One of the nicest guys there is. Teach us how to hit fades. Yeah, nice fades. Um all right, I’m going to go with a guy who just played this past week and played some good golf. Eric Cole coming off a top 10 at the Sanderson. Mr. Steady Eddie, you get him plus 210 for a top 20 over there. So, I know it’s a long travel and all that. I don’t know whether to pick the top guys as they what’s their interest level or guys that have just played well over here but are traveling. I don’t really know, but I’m going to go EC plus 210. There you have it. Let’s get to some football here. Uh we’re going to combine our picks here. My pick of the week, this team’s rolling right now. Also, hold on. Before I get to this team, I want to talk about a little something that happened. uh Theo Vaughn, who was the celebrity guest picker. Yes. Over there, who said one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard in the history of the show. And I watched the show every single Saturday. But obviously, he’s a Vanderbilt guy down in Tuscaloosa at Alabama. The house that Bear Bryant built that Nick Sabin remodeled was one of his lies. But then when it came time to pick the game, he said, “You know, Vanderbilt beat them last year, but Kaylin Debor didn’t have his guys. He had the other coaches rag tag bullshit.” And right in front of Nick S. It was so simple. It was beautiful. Well done, Theo Von. I really enjoyed that part. Saving gets a lot of [ __ ] on. Shane Gillis at Notre Dame, was it last year when he came up? He’s like, “Yeah, dude. Now that we can all pay players, I mean, you know, these guys been doing it for years.” And Nick like took offense and he was like, “Oh, sorry. Thought we were going to have fun here.” That was a good one though. And Pat McAfee letting Kirk Herbstreet throw the ball through the uprights after the girl that had never kicked anything in her life got selected for the field goal kicking contest gave her 300 grand. 300k for Turkey boy to fire it through which didn’t clear by much. No, but it looked nice in the sport code all gustied up. That’s tough tough environment. All right, so speaking of that, I’m going to stay with Bama because they are hot right now. Beat Georgia, beat Vanderbilt. They’re going to Missouri. Tough place to play. Missouri is a good football team, but Bama’s favored by three. So, roll tide. Roll tide. All right, that’s your pick of the week. I’m going with a juggernaut. I’m going to keep riding these boys for a while. They had a week off after a huge win over in um at the white out game at Penn State, which by the way, maybe maybe doesn’t look as good. I mean, they just got boat race. By the way, Jerry Newheisle, uh congratulations. You’re about to be the most highly soughtafter coach in football. But he did. That was unbelievable, dude. How bad UCLA went to how good they looked in one week. And no one will ever question who your dad is. No. How about the flow? I mean, have you ever in your life in your life? The cameras on Rick in the studio for CBS was fantastic. They had the UCLA tie on all that stuff. That was cool game, but I kept waiting for them to blow it and Penn State to win a greasy state. You stink. They Yeah, that hurt me. Um, but this team back at home with a big game against Indiana who’s beaten some people, whose coach likes to talk a lot of noise, but I think Oregon might be the best team in the country. I’m going to take a minus eight at home against Indiana. All right. So, we got Oregon and Bama, two favorites. And what’s our third game? I’m going to let you pick here. I’ve circled two and you tell me which one you like. Okay, we got the University of Tennessee minus 12 a half at home against Arkansas. Okay, coming off a pounding Notre Dame absolutely shelled them recently. Or our local team, Arizona State Sundevils getting five in a hook at Utah. Let’s keep it local. Okay, come on, Coach Dylan. Get them fired up. Get ready to go. We’re going with the Sundevils plus five and a half off of by week two up in Utah. Mhm. Just getting rolling. Arizona State, Bama, Oregon. Book it. That’s our three-way parlay this week over at Fanatic Sports Book. I don’t see any way that I hope it does. I don’t see any way that that loses. Well, speaking of winning, our guest this week just won the biggest championship of his career right down the road here at Truman Country Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, Arizona. He’s the Minam champ. Something I know you, Drew KDson, a lot of people around here strive for, but Brandon Holtz put on an unbelievable performance. He’ll be playing at the Masters next year and the US Open at Shink. He is the 2025 Midam Champ and here he is on Subpar. All right, our guest today is a full-time real estate agent, part-time tweet maker, which he did in abundance a couple weeks ago out in Scottsdale. Former college basketball player joining us fresh off his US Midam victory. Bloomington, Illinois’s finest, Brandon Holtz, stand up. Congratulations, my man. Well done. Hey, guys. Thank you. You got it, man. That awesome to see. You know, I’ve heard I’ve heard a little bit about you and everything. I mean, obviously a lot of people know you played at Illinois State, played college basketball, then turned pro, played a little golf professionally before getting your amateur stats back. But I want to go back like that’s not a normal route for most people. So, tell me how it began. Like, had you always played golf? You were just better at basketball? Uh, yeah. I mean, yes. I mean, basketball was kind of my number one. Uh, you know, the thing about golf is you can’t really go out there and hit anybody or run a little faster. You know, um, the aggression side of the whole sport, uh, is a little more difficult than, you know, playing basketball. So, golf’s always been secondary. Um, played basketball, fortunately enough to get a scholarship to play at Illinois State in my hometown, and was able to continue to kind of play golf on the side. you know, uh, at that time we joined, uh, we were members at a little nine-hole course in in town, Lakeside Country Club. And, you know, if I had a little bit of time, I’d call my dad, call my buddies, hey, let’s go get a couple holes in, maybe a quick nine. Um, so just the location of me being where I was, uh, you know, I was able to continue to play. Did you have any offers for golf coming out of high school? I didn’t. No, I didn’t. Um, I actually had about 14 offers for basketball coming out of high school and I just never played uh, you know, any of the tournaments uh, golf tournaments and in the summer just cuz my AAOU schedule was um, we were traveling a lot. We were we were pretty busy. Describe your hoops game for me. Uh, like I said, I I I I wasn’t fast. I couldn’t jump. I couldn’t dribble, but I could come off the screen and I could I could shoot the [ __ ] out of it. So, that’s that’s kind of where I was. Um, I was a three-point specialist, I guess. Um, and I was just kind of tough, I guess. I don’t I don’t like to talk about it, you know, but I wasn’t scared to mix it up. And I’m about 63, so I I played a little bit of the four every once in a while just cuz I can muddy it up a little bit. But, um, it it was it was an ugly game. Was there any like aspirations? I’m I mean sure there was growing up, but like when you were in college playing at a division one school, any aspirations of turning pro in basketball? Uh not really. I’m kind I kind of knew my place. I mean I growing up of course you know walk watching Michael Jordan you know my younger years every you know everyone wanted to be him. Um but no I mean I I’m a 62 63 guy that again can’t run can’t jump can’t really dribble. So I kind of knew who I was. lunch pale guy, you know, blue collar guy. First one in, last one out. I know your type. I knew what I was in there to do. I know your type. Did you ever consider like Gary Woodland started out playing basketball transfer once he was like, “All right, maybe there isn’t a future in this. I’m going to go play golf.” Did you ever consider that? uh you know after my fourth year uh I want uh going into my fifth year the the you know I had some of the players on the golf team approach me talk about you know maybe coming out uh playing on the team but you know being on the basketball team four years of you know telling them you know being told what to do how to do when to do um it was kind of like h you know I kind of maybe I want to enjoy this fifth year a little bit um so yes there was thoughts But when it was all said and done, I’m now to this day I, you know, I wish I could go back that, you know, get that some of that collegiate experience on the golf level. But, you know, hindsight’s 2020, right? Yeah. But it makes your story so much cooler that you played college basketball at a division one place, not some bum school like Gary did. Yeah. No one’s even heard of that. I don’t think it’s a real school. Where’d he go? No, I’m kidding. Washurn. You ever heard of it? No, no one has. Not real. Um, but fast forward. So you finish up college. Did you turn pro in golf immediately or or what age were you finally professional? So I graduated in 2010 and I took pretty much that half year to just kind of practice. Uh then I turned professional. So I I think it still was 2010 technically. Um and then played full-time from 10 to 14. Um I I call it my triangle. It’s basically Illinois to Carolina to Florida. Um just because I could drive there, right? I mean, I I didn’t have any sponsors, obviously. I didn’t play golf, so no one knew I could, you know, actually play a little bit. Um, and that was it. I mean, really, I, you know, 10 to 14, I played as many events as I could. I worked as well, you know, find a country club just like a lot of these guys do. And, uh, you know, play when you can, but make some money to live. Um, and that’s, I mean, that’s kind of the story. I kept my professional card when I was done after 14. uh to play in a couple state opens, you know. Um but yeah, that’s it. I mean, I make a few bucks. Yeah, I kept my professional card just just to play in the state opens. And then I got to a point where I, you know, got married, had a couple kids, and just wasn’t playing enough to to justify keeping it. You know, I had one event a year almost up until like 21 and then I was like, you this isn’t fun. Um got my amateur status back. I applied in 23, got it back last year. And um honestly, I’ve said this before, I got my amateur status back so I could play in the city events with all my buddies. Absolutely. When they’re playing all these events, I got nobody to play with. And then, you know, talk a little trash and have a little more fun, you know, and then obviously knew at at some point I was going to get back to kind of some kind of competition and here we are. Well, those city events will be good prep for the Masters and the US Open. And it’ll be like you’ll be ready. You won’t even be shocked by the Exactly. You know, grab a grab a case or a six bag of beer at the turn and you know, let’s go play the back nine. Right. Yeah. It’s the same [ __ ] What mini tours were you playing? We said you were in Carolina. Were you playing like E Tour Sunshine Tour? That type of stuff. And did And did you have success? Uh I wouldn’t successes of of No success. No. Um I paid a lot of money to play. You know, I the you know, one thing I pride myself on the mini tour route is I never won an event, but I I only missed one cut. Um so the game was always just kind of consistent. Just never could go that low. Um but I played on the Peach State Tour out of Atlanta mainly and then um bounced around the Hooters NGA tour, a couple events there, and um the West Florida Golf Tour when I was kind of living down there in the in the winters. What was the largest check you made as a professional? Um, I got second in the Illinois Open two times and I believe the largest one was 14,000. Okay. It’s a good check on the J. Oh, it’s a great It’s a great check except uh I was uh still in a negative, right? Yeah, but that’s pretty much how it works on those tours. You brought up getting you brought up getting your amateur status back and I feel like it’s always there’s some talk of that every year at the mid end, but this year there was a lot of it and I mean when you look at it 16 guys left, 14 of them were former professionals. What’s your kind of response to all this? Because there’s some people and I think it’s ridiculous like hey once you turn professional you’re professional forever but you like you said you still want to compete occasionally. What are your what what do you say to those people that say these professionals shouldn’t be playing in these amateur events? Former professionals, you know, and again, like you said, I’ll speak for myself. I’m not going to speak for everybody. Um, and what I say is probably not what everyone’s going to like, but I the US Midam was basically built for this in my opinion, right? I mean, you got to be over 25. Everyone’s working. Well, I wouldn’t say everyone. Who knows what people’s situation is, but I’m a working man. I got a couple kids, got a wife. Like, uh, for me, what as far as competition’s concerned, what else am I going to play in? My Bloomington Normal City event, a town of, you know, 60,000 people. Like, that’s fun, don’t get me wrong, and it’s great, but what else can I play in if if we don’t have the the mid? And we’re talking, if you really want to get into the logistics of it all, 2010 to 14 played full-time. I’m sure if you want to call it full-time, working, traveling on my own, you know, doing everything on my own with a little bit of help from my dad, but we’re losing money. And then I kept it just because I had flexibility in the job that I had to be able to go play, uh, you know, in hopes to, hey, hey babe, hey wife, I’m gonna go play this weekend and hopefully I can bring a little, you know, a few bucks home. Mhm. Um, so, you know, somebody else approached me about levels of of, you know, professional play. I don’t I don’t think I necessarily disagree with that, but I can’t I’m not going to speak on those guys. You know, that I I was never there. So, uh, they might have a different perspective than me, but I think was built for this, built for people over 25 with a with a full-time job, kids. Yeah. And that’s why the US sorry why why the USGA puts in the like the duration how long it takes you to get your car back. The better your career was the more stuff you did the longer it takes for you to get your amateur status back. And I just think when people bring that up it’s like there’s a period of time that goes by where like what you did 10 years ago as your job is not matter anymore. You know like there’s a point where like you know it’s irrelevant almost. And I’m not saying first year out after playing pro you should be able to go play amateur events. Like you said, when you start working, you got kids, and you’re playing once a week or whatever, it’s like, “Yeah, dude. Nine years ago, I played a lot of golf, but a lot’s happened since then.” Well, rules are rules, too, right? Follow rules. It It is what it is. Yeah. I I don’t see the problem with it. I went back and forth on Twitter with a bunch of people that disagreed with me, which, by the way, pretty much everyone on Twitter disagrees with somebody. It’s absolutely annoying. But, uh, let’s let’s go to the midamp out here in Scottsdale, Arizona, right down the road from us, Trune Country Club. First off, how special was it to have your dad on the bag all week? Uh, it’s it I mean my growing up around town, you know, with my dad, we it was awesome. I mean, he’s he’s cattied before. It’s this isn’t anything normal or not normal. This isn’t anything new. Um, and it was great. I mean, that that bear hug on the last hole that I mean, my dad’s a big fit dude. Um, I I got the best of him on that on that bear hug there. That’s good. And this was your I’m sorry. Go ahead. This was your first USG event. Yeah, it was great. It was great. Absolutely. It’s got to be. But like I said, please just said first USGA event. So you’re one for one, undefeated. It’s good. I’m I’m coming back for two for two, too. I was going to say you can hang it up as By the way, speaking of your dad, is he going to be on the bag at Augusta? Have you decided that? 100%. I mean, it’s this a once in a lifetime opportunity, right? Hopefully. Hopefully not, but um you know, let’s be a little bit more realistic. Um yeah, he’s on the bag. I mean, I think I think the plan is um you know, my brother might be on the bag for the US Open and then hopefully get that invite to the Masters and and my dad is definitely on the bag. Uh, and just a little insight, my So, my dad won badges, two badges, uh, two tournament badges, uh, for life in 2004. For life. For life. Yeah. So, he won the lottery. Damn. Back when they opened it up to everything. So, we’ve been going down there for 20 years. So, we, you know, it makes it a little more special just because we understand how special it is, right? Um, so just, you know, walking the grounds and saying, “Oh, what’s behind that rope? you know what’s in that building. We’re going to find out this year. It’s going to be it’s going to be pretty sweet. Hopefully. Hopefully. Right. Okay. You’re going to have a little better vantage this year than you have. I didn’t know it was lifetime bad. Okay. Since you’ve been there several times, I’m guessing you haven’t had a chance to play it, right? I’ve never played it. No. Give me the Give me the hole you’re most excited to play. Um, you know, the ones I like to watch are number two and number six. number two just cuz I like to see the you know for the bigger hitters having that opportunity to to to um hit it on number two green and two just because the green’s crazy but you can also kind of see you know how downhill that actual hole is. A lot of people don’t you know they they don’t realize how undulated and how hilly that place actually is. Um but I really want to number 14 how crazy that green is. I just want to go take a bucket of balls and hit chips as many times as I can around that thing cuz it’s I’ll tell you what from the bottom to the top I think it’s about 8 ft, you know, and it’s that just it’s just from a distance it looks crazy. I can’t imagine being right on top of it. Well, chip during the practice round, don’t chip during the tournament away. Yeah, let’s let’s please not. We’re going to try to stay. Brandon, I mean, you’ve been out there a ton. It’s just a monstrous monstrous yard. What’s your like club head speed right now? How far are you moving it out there? Like is it are you long enough to think you can go post some good scores? I I mean I you know if I play good I think I can I can definitely compete. Uh and I’m I’m not going to sit here and tell you guys yeah I’m going to go win the damn thing cuz one I’ve never played there. Two you know these guys that that are in that field they’re not they’re the best, right? Um and I’m not I’m not silly enough to to underestimate that. Um but club head speed, I mean I’m probably 125. I mean I I get the ball out there over 300. So, you know, from Tet to Green, I’m not all that um I don’t like to use the word scared, but TA Green, I’m ready. I I feel like it’s just around the greens, you know, where to miss. That’s going to be key. You know, putts are going to be key. I’ve been go again, I’ve been going out there. I know where these guys are hitting it, but you can’t really, you know, you don’t really know what wedge shot, what iron shot to hit into that green until you actually do it. Yeah. Well, that’s 125 works. That works. That works. By the way, uh the other caddy in the finals there for Je Coughlin was a fellow that’s played Augusta a few times, won on the PJ tour a few times. Did you have any idea Kevin Stillman was the other caddy in your in your final match? I did I did not know until the night before. Um and then you know Strowman’s an Illinois guy. So you know we’ve consciously always have seen where the Illinois guys are doing. We’ve watched, you know, Strowman do all his things. And actually, my I think it was my second year out there at Augusta when we were watching my cousin and I somehow got into some conversation with Strowman’s dad maybe um on the 6T and it was just kind of cool from there. So, ever since then, you know, finding out he’s an Illinois guy, went to um you know, it just it just made it a little bit more special to kind of follow him. And then when I f found out he was on the bag, you know, we got to chitchatting a little bit and then after it was all said and done, we got to talking uh exchanged numbers. So, I’m going to pick his brain here once everything kind of settles down in the next couple weeks for sure. That’s awesome. He also said the T-shot you hit to close it out to 8 ft was one of the best shots he’s ever seen. That’s cool. That’s cool thing to hear from a guy that’s seen some shots. I mean, you drove it to 8 feet, right? Yeah. I mean, and that’s a pretty cool compliment. That’s awesome. But honestly, I guys, I I don’t remember hitting that shot and I don’t remember hitting the putt. I mean, I think I just blacked out, you know. I’m just It was Yeah, I mean, I I knew I was ready for that shot, especially in the morning. I hit 3-wood just in the front, and I didn’t I didn’t hit it great, but I knew it wasn’t 3-wood. I needed to hit driver. Um, so yeah, I mean, I I I remember I remember the ball taking off. I don’t remember really hitting it. Um, but yeah, that was special. That’s so cool. And you you closed it out right there. You win the US Midam. But one last thing about Strowman, which I found was funny because he just called me before we headed over here. And I was like, “How did you end up catting?” And he’s like, “Dude, I’ve known Je Coughlin for a long time.” Kevin was just coming off knee surgery, by the way. Hadn’t really been doing a whole lot. Told Je, he’s like, “Hey, if you make match play, I’ll caddy for you.” And he goes, “Next thing you know, I’m cattying 36 a day right out of knee surgery and have to go all the way to the finals.” Well, my my dad was pretty happy with it because we get we get, you know, we’re on the range and my dad found out that Kevin had a a push cart and that was literally probably the only match that we had somebody else, Caddy, that had a push cart. So, my dad was feeling pretty good. He’s like, “Oh, finally I got somebody who’s smart enough to just push the bag, right?” Yeah. And it’s not exactly cold here. Yeah. My dad’s 65, you know, like it he needed that push cart. That was a lot of golf in a little bit of time. That’s a lot of golf. the 36 whole day, especially out on that golf course in the desert is tough. So now you got Kevin Stelman, you can pick his brain as you go into these major championships next year. Any other guys on tour right now that you’re you’re buddies with or maybe you came up with the mini played the mini tours with that you can maybe reach out to and get some advice and all that? Uh potentially. You know, I played with Tony Fen a little bit on the National Golf or the National Pro Tour. It’s not even a thing anymore. I think I think they stole all our money anyways, but they did. I was on that thing, too. Where? Yeah, exactly. Oh yeah, exactly. Um, so I mean I I haven’t had any contact with him by any means, but I might, you know, you shoot a message to him to see if he would respond. Um, I specifically remember we were out in Bowling Brook, Illinois. Uh, the National Pro Tour had an event out there and I was doing all right and they had a rain delay or something and my wife and I actually had lunch with Tony’s uh, dad and some of his family. Gipper was out there. Uh, so it’d be kind of cool to reconnect that, you know, maybe see if he remembers. Probably not. You know what? Why the hell would he remember me, right? Um, but I mean, that would be cool. But other than that, I Patton Kazire was another guy. He played on a couple of the uh uh Peach State Tour events. He’s I think he’s from a somewhere around Atlanta or I don’t know. Um, but those are some of the names. That’s awesome. Well, with this win, obviously it opens up a lot of doors for you, not just the Masters and the US Open, but you have the chance to play in a lot of these big-time amateur events going forward, especially in the summer. One, will you consider playing those even though you’re a full-time working man? And two, the Walker Cup has to have a mid amter on there, and with they’re changing the schedule up next year, the Walker Cup is happening again. It’s not two years this year. You’re the mid AM champ. Have you thought about that at all? Honestly, I No. Um, one of my good buddies, uh, we I stopped at the golf course this morning and he was looking all these amateur events up and he’s like, “Dude, you got to play in all these.” And I had no idea that there are all these, you know, amateur events, uh, that were out there. I mean, I’ve heard of the Walker Cup, but then I was like, “All right, whatever.” You know, that’s I I would love to do it. U, but even your information right there, Cole, I I didn’t know it was every year now, so I heck Yeah, they’re changing it. It’s it has been odd years, but because of something going on, I don’t know if it’s the Olympics or what, but they’re changing. And so the Walker Cup is gonna be next year, then it’s every other year after that, but it’s overseas. It’ll be La Hinch in Ireland next year. So, sounds terrible time. Yeah. And you’re off to a nice start lead on the mids. You should play some of these mid events, dude. If you need any help, reach out to me. I can tell you the ones like to play and stuff like that. It’s a cool circuit if you can get the time. It’s hard with family and all that, but yeah, that’s super realistic. I didn’t realize it was next year either. Yeah. Yeah, that’d be Yeah. You know, and I’m all ears, man. I I don’t I didn’t realize that there was, you know, I talked to a couple guys in a practice round that were talking about traveling around playing in all these events, and I’m like, “Oh, this is pretty sweet.” But, man, I mean, golf comes with a price, right? So, it’s kind of one of those, you know, kind of weigh the options and see what see what you can and can’t do. But, no, I’m at this point, I’m all ears. I’m I’ll do whatever I can for sure. Just get on that Steuart Hagistad schedule. You’ll be fine. Right. Get his number. So, I’m I’m gonna I’m gonna reach out to him and pick his brain and see how that all works. He knows how it goes down. Uh we’ve been doing all the Masters talk. Also, Shinock coming up. That’s going to be pretty. You ever been up there playing that? Didn’t I I saw I believe that you said you made it to sectionals like six times. U close. Yeah, I made it to sectionals. was I mean I had kind of a hunting spot uh in Springfield, Illinois uh that I just it just fit my eye. So I I made it out of there a couple times when I was down in Florida. I made it out uh but could never I could never crack it. I mean just wasn’t good enough, you know. Uh didn’t play you got and those deals, especially when you get to sectionals, 36 holes of you got to play your best golf, right? Somebody’s going to. Um so I never cracked it, but I’ve never been out to Shinik. No. Well, it’s special. And by the way, it’s hard as [ __ ] So get ready. Buckle your chin strap and get ready to battle. All right. Quickly, let’s get to our E9 here. SE, I’m going let you pick the first question. Which way do you want to go? Um, I’m gonna go with uh give me your childhood and or current celebrity crush to the married man. Yeah, it’s okay. Oh boy. Um, I mean, let let’s take it back. JLo, Jennifer Lopez. I mean, come on. Oh boy. USA is going to be fine. Okay, Brandon, I see you, big fella. Holtz and Stalls coming. Yeah, I remember calling you on that fourball. We’d be a good team. Wow. Just dumping like I got a guy. All right, next one. We mentioned Gary Woodland earlier. Who’s the only other one I know that had the same route as you? College basketball turned into professional. You and Gub oneonone. Who’s winning? I mean, I don’t want to take any credit from him. I know he’s coming back from some serious stuff, but uh I’m I’m not going to say no. Come on. Bring it on, Gary. One of them one of them played D1 ball. Yeah, exactly. And one of them got a couple inches on the other one, too. Yeah, Gary’s a scrub. No, we should. That would be actually awesome to watch. And by the way, don’t you can take shots at Gary. It’s fine. We do it all the time. It’s a safe space. Yeah, this is a safe space. Give me your best nastiest stat line high school ball. Uh, my junior year I averaged uh 20 I aaged 24 seven and like four, I believe. Um, okay. And my highest point game, uh, and this is AAU, so it’s a little bit different, but AAU I had I had 71 um against Old Chicago. Just couldn’t miss. It’s one of those days. Goodness. 71. How many threes? I think all of them. I think it’s divisible by three, but that’s all right. No. Hey, good math over there. No, there were some free throws, a couple shot fakes, you know. Um, but I Yeah, I’ll never forget it. Was up in Chicago playing Old Gold, which is a big time AO program out of Chicago, but uh just couldn’t miss that day. 20 22 threes, five free throws. That’s a snow line. To to reiterate, it was it went into double overtime. So, there’s a little little disc. You should have left out. It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter. Dude, you could have gone to that school in Iowa where they trot out five at a time like hockey and all they do is shoot threes. You seen that school? Right. Oh, dude. That place looks like heaven for for dudes that like the jacket. Yep. Oh, man. All right. Next one. When you look at the professional golf game, whose game do you think you most closely resemble? Uh, I mean, honestly, while we were talking about Gary Woodland, I mean, hits it long, putts it well. That’s kind of where I’m at. Um, everything in between could use a little bit of a little bit of work. Uh, but I’m not scared to hit the driver, man. Just tee it up and and hit it. Um, and that’s what I mean differentiated me from, you know, a lot of the guys at the minute am. There’s a lot of guys hitting irons off the tea, 3-woods off the tea. I’m a hitting driver, man. That’s the strongest club in my bag. And I grew up hitting it. Hit it. I love that. Well, Gary would get stuck in a corner in a round room. So, hopefully you’re not that way. [ __ ] If I swing at 125, I’d be It’ be my favorite. It’ be my favorite club in the bag, too. Uh, all right, Brandon, give me the player. I feel like everybody’s got one that played basketball at a high level. The player you played against that just made you go, “Nope, this different level.” Sean Livingston. I don’t I don’t know if you guys know a whole lot about but if he did not break everything in his knee um I honestly think he would have been top 50. Um no doubt that guy did uh things with the basketball that blew my mind. Um and he was he was honestly kind of changed the game of basketball. 67 point guard. You didn’t see that often. And I’m almost positive that he was the one that started you know that whole trend for sure. I forgot about him. Good scoop. Like that. All right, next one. You’re heading to Augusta. Going out on a Tuesday, you know, late morning for a little practice round. You can pick any three guys in the field to play with. Who you going with? Well, one Tiger if it if that could ever happen, right? Probably doubtful, but u you know, I want some I want some long hitters. I want to see kind of where I stack up. John Romy would be great. Um, nope. Bubble watching would bubble watching would be fun just cuz you know I I do a lot of range watching when I’m out there and that guy just hits the the craziest shots ever imaginable. Uh, so he’d be fun. And then good old Freddy Couples. Uh, light and low. Just just a good old boy. Um, just easy street, right? Absolutely. Freddy’s the man. Uh, last one. Your phone’s been ringing the whole time, so business has got to be booming. You’re a real estate agent. Um, have you closed a few more deals since you won being like, “Hey, you know what? You buy this house, I’ll throw in a master’s ticket for you.” Yeah, I wish I could do that, but uh, no, I mean, hey, I I’m just like all you guys, man. We wake up, we go to work. Um, so nothing new yet. I’m hoping that they’ll strum up some business, but just just wear a green jacket. There’s all Well, we’ll see. You know, that’d be fun, too. Bring that trophy to open houses. Yeah, right. Just All right, Brandon. Well, man, we want to once again congratulate you. Incredible performance at the mid. I know you’re a busy guy. Thank you so much for taking some time to join us here on Subpar. All right, that was the 2025 USGA Midam Champ Brandon Holtz joining us there. I like this guy. Seems like he likes to be a little bit of [ __ ] talker. Likes some action on the golf course. My kind of fella. Mhm. big boy. I was like, “Hey, how’s your distance stack up for a big yard like a ghost?” Ah, it’s I mean, you know, I’m all right. 125. Yeah. Oh, okay. How about his dad winning a lifetime badges to the last? I didn’t either. That’s That’s unbelievable. And I mean, yeah, if he’s hit the driver that good to hit around here on like a desert, if you’re not afraid to hit it out here, then Augusta is going to seem like wide open spaces around there. But cool dude, basketball player. great com like he’s the one you know not in him necessarily but just like the what was it the final 16 14 of them were former pros and it’s like you hear his story it’s like all right is that a guy that should be like does he have a monstrous advantage against everyone else or some of these amateurs that are playing year-long schedules more or less it’s like yeah I kept my you know I stayed pro cuz I wanted to play the state open for a little bit of money for a few years and stuff like I don’t know it gets into I think there’s there’s levels to it all in terms of like how how long you played, where you played, what tour you played on, money made, all the stuff. And I think, you know, for the most part, they take all that into account and set your, you know, timeline accordingly. But I do think it’s like really weird. I don’t think there’s any like system to it. It’s just who gets in front of your all, you get four years, you get two years, and it’s like, dude, we had similar careers, you know? Yeah. But congratulations to him. Awesome win. And can’t wait to see him at two of the four major championships next year. and sleeves. Why wear the same thing as everyone else when you can rock gear made just for you? I just designed some Birdie Juice T-shirts, and the process was seamless. The fit and finish were perfect. Now it’s your move. Design polos, hoodies, and other favorites with top tier golf brands, all featuring the logos you love. Don’t settle for standard. Visit shop.golf.com and create your own custom look. You look good, bud. I know. You look good. And fall season coming up. A lot of giving. Lot of hoodies. A lot of giving to be done out there for all the golfers and golf fans with golf friends. All right. Well, why don’t you wrap this up here for us? Oh, can I tell you something else I discovered this week? Oh my god. Oh, yes. I played a hit and giggle charity scramble. And when I say hit and giggle, fullon hit and giggle par threes. They’re like, “Hey, would you like to buy a zero? You can buy a I was like I mean 24 or 5 under or something won the golf tournament.” I think you could buy your way into like 12 under without ever hitting a shot. Anyways, as you know, those things take ages. Stacked up on every tea. You get a good chance to get to know the groups in front of you. Typically, we had a group of four out there having themselves good time. Did not win the golf tournament, but they they led in other categories. Well, one of them after like six, seven, eight holes uh walks over. He’s like, “Hey, dude, you ever tried these?” I look at him smelling salts. And he had these. I was like, “No.” But we had just talked about it, you and I, when the NFL was like going to ban those things and now you got a Boss. Um, he had him. I was like, “Oh, no. Let me get a let me get a little sniff.” Anyways, I did it. BB did it maybe a few more times than you probably should over the the course of the round, but I think I’m going to go buy some and put them in the bag. It’s like, dude, it’s just like a shot of life straight into your head. It’s like a cold plunge for your brain in there. Just knocks the cobwebs off. You ever had any of these? I mean, back in the day, like in high school when they were on the football sidelines, you tried them. Since then, I wasn’t ready to run through a wall or anything, but yes, they do wake you up. They It shoots right to your brain like you said. But smelling salt Celsius. Yeah, you’ll be getting a little lethargic on the course. Take a shot of that. You got it all figured out. I’m just saying. I’m surprised no one’s cracked this code. That’s what everybody says. At least needs more uppers. No one’s cracked this code out in the golf world. I might be the first one to do it. But warning on that, don’t do it too much. As I found out, there are negative consequences. And also warning when it comes to our friends over at Zone, this product contains nicotine and nicotine is an addictive chemical. Underage sale is prohibited. Listen, when I need to dial things in on the course, I go with Zone nicotine pouches. Why? One, stronger nick intensity. The others aren’t even close. Two, better flavors. And three, they last longer and they’re more comfortable than any other pouch out there. My go-to is the 9 milligram spearmint, but they make seven flavors in both six and 9 millig. They are a game changer. 20 pouches per can versus the 15 the other guys offer. It is a nobrainer. I do not go anywhere without at least one can of zone on me. If you want zone pouches at a discount and mailed right to your door, head to nicokick.com nico kic.com and enter code subpar20 at checkout for an additional 20% off. Can’t beat that, buddy boy. Beautiful. All right, that’s a wrap. We’ll talk to you on next week’s Subpar. [Music]
