Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy at a TGL event
Season two of the virtual golf league TGL set up by Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods is set to begin in a couple of months’ time and, ahead of the event beginning, tournament organisers have revealed some minor changes from its inaugural campaign.
The indoor competition, which is played at the SoFi Center in Florida and involves top PGA Tour players using Trackman-like technology to hit towards a screen that reflects where the ball goes on a virtual course, will return on December 28 for its opening match.
Last season’s winners Atlanta Drive will meet New York in a rematch of March’s Final in the first fixture, which takes place two weeks earlier than the first season’s start, with McIlroy’s Boston Common and Woods’ Jupiter Links aiming to make the Play-Offs after missing out last year.
While the teams, players and rules are set to remain largely the same, TGL has announced some alterations to the format for its 15-match second season, most notably a switch away from only Monday night fixtures.
The opening match, for instance, is on a Sunday at 8pm Northern Irish time, while there are already matches scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays later in the season as well.
McIlroy and Woods will be involved in TGL’s first-ever primetime Sunday clash when Boston Common and Jupiter Links square off on Sunday March 1 – although it will be at 2am on the Monday morning in Northern Ireland – while the second match of the tournament between Los Angeles and Boston Common will be on Friday January 2.
Atlanta Drive are defending TGL champions
Notably, that March 1 date coincides with the final round of the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic, which means McIlroy will not be playing in that tournament, while there will be three matches played before the Tour season kicks off at The Sentry on January 8.
The schedule has once again been worked around the PGA Tour’s Florida Swing, with four matches taking place in two days on February 23 and 24, straight after the Genesis Invitational and before the Cognizant Classic, with the regular season ending with matches on three consecutive days on March 1, 2 and 3.
The Semi-Finals will form a double-header on Tuesday March 17, two days after the conclusion of The Players Championship, with the Final staged as a best-of-three contest on March 23 and 24.
