ELK RIVER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s golf team competed in the three-round Twin Cities Classic this weekend. The Gusties shot +30 through the three days to win the tournament, finishing in first place out of the field of 16 teams.
“The guys really put together three days of good golf this weekend and it’s always fun to win our own tournament,” said Gustavus assistant coach Randall Stuckey. “The solid golf has been improving as the season has gone on so the entire team’s hard work and challenging of each other is paying off.
Gustavus won by 15 strokes over runner-up Bethel, who shot +45 as a team. St. John’s was third at +52, Carleton fourth at +53, and Nebraska Wesleyan fifth at +54.
Chris Gutuza led the Gusties at the Classic, shooting +5 to finish tied for third overall out of the field of 85 golfers. Jimmy Abdo followed at +7 for the tournament, placing fifth overall. Blake Forrest finished in the top 10 as well for Gustavus, shooting +10 through the three rounds to tie for seventh overall. Wyatt Carlson shot +12 and Kyle Peterson shot +23 to tie for 17th and 49th overall respectively.
“Congratulations to Chris who finished third on his birthday, Jimmy finishing fifth, and Blake finishing seventh,” said Stuckey. “Three in the top 10 is very good. The entire team will now prepare for the Golfweek Invitational next weekend in Destin, Florida.”
Up next for Gustavus is the three-round Golfweek Invitational starting Sunday, October 12 and finishing Tuesday, October 14.
