LAS CRUCES, N.M. – In a unique event, the NM State men’s and women’s golf teams will compete alongside one another this week as they continue their fall slates. They are set to travel to Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M., to compete in the highly anticipated NB3 Matchplay at Twin Warriors. This will mark the second consecutive year that the Aggies make the trip to Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M., to compete in the event televised on the Golf Channel.
Last year, the Aggies were able to take home the team title on the men’s side, defeating Stanford, Texas and New Mexico. Additionally, the Aggies finished second in the combined team standings, coming in behind only Texas.
This weekend will feature the Aggies in a match play style event with the men’s team taking on opponents Oregon, UNLV and New Mexico and the women’s team squaring off against Texas A&M, Arizona and New Mexico. Coverage of the event will begin live on Golf Channel at 3:30 p.m. MT on Tuesday, Oct. 7, and at 2:30 p.m. MT on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
The teams will compete across 54 holes of match play style scoring with 36 holes being played on Tuesday and 18 being played on Wednesday to close things out. Play will begin at 7:30 a.m. MT on Monday morning with a shotgun start with twosomes competing in a round robin format. Monday afternoon, the competitors with participate in single tee match play in foursomes, beginning at Noon. Wednesday, start times will be approximately 11 a.m.
SCORING FORMAT
Teams will receive one point for winning a match, ½ pt when splitting and zero points for losing the match. In the event of a tie at the conclusion of a match, each coach will select one of their players to compete in a sudden death playoff.
AGGIE LINEUPS
This year, the NM State men will travel a team consisting of Javier Delgadillo, Mateo Payán, Ehtan Klose, Vari Mariscal, Max Chan and Anthony Lara. For Delgadillo, Payán, Klose and Mariscal, this will mark the second consecutive year that they will represent the Aggies in this event. Last year, the Aggies’ victory was fueled by performances from Delgadillo and Klose, who each earned three points to earn the maximum possible.
Delgadillo opened the week with a 3&2 win over No. 15 Tommy Morrison of Texas, while Klose knocked off the Longhorns’ No. 49 Luke Potter, 4&3. Delgadillo then defeated Stanford’s Jay Leng and Klose bested Leng’s teammate Logan Kim. On the final day of competition, Delgadillo earned a point against New Mexico’s Carson Herron, while Klose earned a commanding 4&3 win over the Lobos’ Clark Sonnenberg. During the week, Vari Mariscal earned an important victory over Stanford’s Ethan Gao.
Meanwhile, the women’s team will be made up of Emma Bunch, Sophia Luna, Rylee Salome, Alexandria Armendariz, Emma Thompson and Isabel Laulhé. This group includes two Aggies, who will be making their return to Twin Warriors as both Bunch and Thompson competed in last year’s event. Bunch’s outing in 2024 was highlighted by a split with No. 15 Paula Martin Sampedro of Stanford and a 4&3 win over New Mexico’s Maria Garcia.
THE COURSE
The event will take place at the iconic Twin Warriors Golf Club in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M. First opened in 2001, the course offers spectacular views of the Sandia Mountains was voted New Mexico’s Best Golf Course in 2022 by World Golf Awards.
