Wheeling, W. Va. – All season long, the Wheeling University Women’s Golf team has been led by their veteran golfers throughout the season, and they head to the Conference stage. The team heads to the 2025 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Women’s Golf Championships as they made a push for the third day of competition. Last season, the Cardinals sent two individual golfers to the third day of competition, and their top golfers on this year’s team are making a push for third round success.
Last time out, the Cardinals sent their top two golfers to the Bull Dog Fall Classic, where they competed against some of the best golfers in the country. They would compete against two rounds of competition, combining to shoot a 348 across the two rounds of competition. Day one saw both golfers shoot 80 plus for the round, with one winding up in the top 50 of the event. Day two is known as moving day and the Cardinals did just that as they moved up the individual standings. Both golfers dropped strokes off their day one score and both made moves up the leaderboard. It was a strong round to end the regular season as they look to be playing their best golf at the conference championship event.
Leading the way for the Cardinals throughout the year has been senior Ella Keffer, who shot a combined 162 across the two rounds of play. She remained in the top 50 throughout the event, sitting tied for 49th after day one, when she put together a 83. On day two, she was able to get back to the sub 80 score, shooting a 79 to round out her event and help her jump five spots in the individual standings. It was the first time this season that Keffer had broke the 160 mark, and she has been consistent throughout the season. She has shot a sub 70 score in all but three rounds this season and has been one of the top golfers in the MEC. She advanced to the third round of the MEC Championships last season, being named Second Team All-MEC and she looks to build on that success this season.
The biggest jump from round one to round two came from Brielle Milhoan, who knocked 20 strokes off her round one score. After shooting 103 in the first round, Milhoan was able to drop down to an 83 in the second round, thanks to hitting two birdies in the round. She would shoot +5 on the back nine as she rounded out her final round of the regular season. The Cardinals will round out their team with sophomore Mallory Bozovich, who competed last at the Pipesteam Classic, where she set a new PR with a score of 114, shooting a 107 in each of the rounds. Rounding out the team will be Women’s Basketball player Graci Fairman, who will be joining the team for her first collegiate golf event. Fairman has golfed independently before, but is competing with the Cardinals for the first time.
The 2025 MEC Men’s Golf Championships will be hosted at The Resort at Glade Springs running from Monday, October 6th through Wednesday, October 8th. It is the first year that the event has come to The Resort at Glade Springs, with the Men’s Championships being a par 72 course. The event will feature 54 holes of stroke play, with the top six teams advancing to round three as well as the top three individuals from non-advancing teams. Last season, the Wheeling Women’s Golf team had two individuals advance to the third day of the event and are looking to at least advance two to this year’s third round. The Cardinal’s look to continue to grow on the course on this year’s event as they grow the program.
