ERIN HILLS, Wisc. — Phillip Kench (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) fired a 1-over-par 73 and is tied atop the leaderboard to lead the San Diego State men’s golf team on the first day of the Marquette Intercollegiate Sunday in Erin Hills, Wisconsin.
Playing for the first time of his career in the Aztec starting lineup, Kench carded a 73 when the stroke average for 90-player field was 79.55 on the par-72, 7,551-yard Erin Hills Golf Course. Kench had a pair of birdies and three bogeys, and is tied with Chattanooga’s Camden Braidech (+1), one stroke ahead of the trio of Rich Wills (Clemson), Wheaton Ennis (Texas A&M) and Jorge Sanchez Gutierrez (Oral Roberts) in a tie for third at +2.
SDSU is in second place out of 14 teams through the first day at 18-over 306, three shots back of Clemson (+15). Rounding out the top 5 are Oral Roberts (+19), No. 16 Texas A&M (+21) and Nevada (+23). Erin Hills G.C. hosted two major championships, including the men’s 2017 U.S. Open and the women’s 2025 U.S. Open.
Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) is in a tie for sixth at +3. Kowack sank five birdies in the round, but also had three bogeys, a double bogey on the par-3, 163-yard ninth and a triple bogey on the par-5, 637-yard 18th.
Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) is tied for 17th at +5 after recording three birdies with six bogeys and a double bogey.
Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) is tied for 55th at +9 and Nathan Sampson is tied for 71st at +11. Competing as an individual, Teddy Gardner is in 90th at +16.
The tournament resumes Monday with the second round.
