One of the lasting memories from this year’s Ryder Cup will come in the form of Shane Lowry’s emotional response to sinking the decisive putt for the European side on the Sunday afternoon.

The Offaly man stood over a tricky birdie opportunity knowing that a make would guarantee that the Europeans retained the Ryder Cup. It was a huge moment for Lowry, who seemed overcome with emotion in the moments afterwards.

That included throwing a piece of food back into the galleries on the 18th.

Shane Lowry tossing food back into the American fans before grabbing the tricolour, as Olé, Olé, Olé rings out – comedy gold, and an incredible, lifelong memory 🇮🇪 😅

Perfect answer after all those crass jibes flung his way, this week 👏 pic.twitter.com/qaxB3P0wkI

While it was thought this move could have been in response to what were consistent and vile comments made by American fans about Shane Lowry’s weight, it seems there is a more innocent explanation.

Irish Fan Explains Truth Behind Shane Lowry Ryder Cup Moment

Shane Lowry would wrap himself in the Tricolour just after launching the item into the crowd, with it turning out that the two incidents are related.

Irishman Mark Clerkin got in touch with Balls contributor Pat McCarry to reveal the truth behind the incident. As it turns out, he and his fellow European Ryder Cup fans had used  the biscuits as a vehicle by which to get the Irish flag to Lowry on the 18th green.

Spotted your tweet about Lowry throwing the food back and just wanted to give ye a bit of context in case you were reporting it as American fans throwing stuff at him.

Me and a few Irish lads were behind the green on 18 and I threw the tricolour to him after he sunk the putt. Needed something to let the flag carry the state troopers so wrapped the biscuits in the flag.

Unbelievable golf from Shane and Europe altogether hope to see them win again in Adare Manor!

The biscuits certainly did the job.

Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy received a huge amount of support from Irish fans during the three days of play at this year’s Ryder Cup, giving a small glimpse into what should be to come when the event reaches these shores in 2027.
