Justin Rose has dismissed the idea of captaining the Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in 2027, expressing his desire to participate as a player instead.
Rose suffered a defeat to Cameron Young in the opening singles match at Bethpage Black on Sunday, with Rose losing on the final hole and sparking a comeback from the United States. The U.S. team, including Cameron Young, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and J.J. Spaun, all emerged victorious in their matches.
Even Keegan Bradley, the captain himself, jumped into the fray, participating in Rose’s match against Young. However, Europe managed to maintain their lead, becoming the first team to secure an away win since their victory at Medinah in 2012. Europe’s triumph was ultimately sealed by Shane Lowry, who sank a putt to draw with Russell Henley, ensuring that the Ryder Cup remained in European hands. Rose, who had a dramatic encounter with Bryson DeChambeau and caddie Ted Scott on Saturday, is now a five-time Ryder Cup champion, reports the Mirror US.
With a career record of 14-9-3, Rose contributed two points to Europe’s 15-13 victory over the United States at Bethpage Black.
Despite leading all players in strokes gained on the green, the 45 year old golfer couldn’t pinpoint why his performance level had elevated.
Given his age, his performance in New York could be his final appearance as a player in the Ryder Cup – but Rose is clearly eyeing playing at Adare Manor. He took to social media to write: “Last post on this year’s @rydercup. It’s time to start making the 2027 @RyderCupEurope team [at] @TheAdareManor.”
Speculation has been swirling that Rose could even spearhead Team Europe as captain when they head to Ireland seeking to retain their Ryder Cup title once more. Although he might be drawn to the position down the line, 2027 could be premature.
“The captaincy would compromise my playing schedule, that’s the decision I haven’t come to terms with. Or made,” Rose said when asked about the captaincy in 2027.
“I think there’s a lot of reflection on this. I’m not even sure when this decision needs to be made.
“There’s no clear path on this, it’s Luke’s decision, first and foremost, see what he wants to do, then go from there, it remains to be seen…The captaincy is not in two years’ time, it starts in two months, or something. That’s something I haven’t got my head around, and what it means, today is not the day to even be thinking about it.
“There’s a lot of digesting to do this week, good and bad, how can the team get better in the future? A really positive week for everybody. There was a lot of build-up to this one, probably a four-year build-up to this one.”
Currently, Team Europe has the option to keep Luke Donald for a third Ryder Cup captaincy stint. His squad chanted ‘two more years’ during their triumphant press conference, prompting Donald to respond: “I’m going to enjoy tonight.”
