A look back at a fantastic Masters where Jon Rahm cemented his place as World number 1. Lots of talking points including – Should Brooks have been penalised for giving advice to playing partner Gary Woodland and his caddy?… The rules seem clear that he should have been but is this a commonly broken rule in golf…?
The rhythm of the swing never changes. Is it long enough? They’re beginning to applaud and quite rightly show. That is a simply magnificent shot from Colin Montgomery. [Applause] Glory is the winner. [Music] Not a million miles away, is it? Hello and welcome to another episode of Tut Golf Scotland. Sorry, I don’t actually I didn’t even mean that. Uh, as always, we are brought to you by Tailormade Golf and their Stealth 2 range of woods. They’re not really woods anymore. Are they not? What do you What do you call them? Carbonies. They’re right. Yeah, they’re carbonies. But they still call them I mean they were called woods for so long even when they became metal and then they became metals. Your fairway metal. So I’ve never heard anybody saying you’re fairway carbonite. I’ve never talked about my fairway metal. Why you hitting into the green here? Americans do, don’t they? Generally three wood, right? Okay. Uh yes, they’re stealthy range of woods and hybrids uh or rescues. their P700 range of irons. And this is the one I want to mention this week. The mil grind three wedges. Mil three grind mil grind three mg with the raw face offering huge amounts of spin. I mean honestly you should see the ball this I can’t wait to come back to you. So you’re using them aren’t you shoot? Mhm. Mhm. And and have you found them really gripping? Yes. That that ones that you play I think I think every new wedge spins doesn’t it? But the Yeah. You know, I remember the I had a set of M another range of wedges before and they just I hated them. They went high. As soon as I hit them, they went high and they didn’t have spin. They went forward. Whereas these ones are going low and I love the look of it. Low and spinny. Yeah, like a like a like a sole plate driver. A thin. Yeah, kind of. That’s what thin spin. Anyway, we’re also brought to you by Brazen Finance, Scotland’s or Togo, Scotland’s favorite finance broker based in Edinburgh and Motherwell, helping small companies, farmers and business owners source the right finance to help them grow. They’re also a good sponsor of Edinburgh and Scottish Rugby and we are promised a day out there at the rugby at some stage, but yeah, I don’t know when it’s going to happen. Is it Chris that’s organizing it? I Yeah, it might not be this year. Hope you’re listening, McMaster. Yeah, but yeah, it’ be it’ be great to get along to rugby. Obviously, there’s a bunch a bunch of the team there are are are international internationalists, Scottish internationalist. So, and they’ve got the World Cup coming up. So, it’s a good team to go and support. It is. It is. Right. So, guys, you guys, what you know, it’s been a couple Andy, you’ve been away. Yeah, you were replaced last year. I was you got some cry. Just stop crying. Uh, did you listen to Steven Gallaer’s podcast? I did. Yeah, I thought it was great. Thought it was really good. Good few insights. Yeah, he was good value, wasn’t he? It was absolutely brilliant. Yeah. Yeah, they’re really nice guy. Anyways, to but yeah, I thought very very good and gave us a couple of nice we snippets that we weren’t expecting. Yeah, not as chat as chatative as chatty as you Andy, but you know, he was pretty good. If I played to his level and knew his knowledge, I’d probably speak a bit more. And Andy, you’ve been away playing golf, haven’t you? I have. Yeah, I played quite a few games actually, but the main one I played yesterday was Trump’s course in Aberdeen. Went up with my dad. It was kind of a late birthday present. Uh he paid for it for himself. But yeah, it it was fantastic. I’ve heard lots of people say how good the course is, and I’m always a little bit wary because a lot of the time I don’t really rate the courses as much as other people have said to me, but I have to admit, absolutely brilliant. Really, really, really good course. Um, I was saying to Donald just before we we came in this morning and I said, um, the most negative thing I can probably say is there’s only four or five good holes. The rest are great holes. You know, that’s the most negative thing I can say. They’re not 18 great holes, which is ridiculous thing to say. It’s just good. Typical Scott looking for the negatives. The only negative thing I can say, I’m so disappointed I’ve only got one negative thing to say. Yeah, it’s just it’s just so good. Yes. There’s a spell of four or five where I thought they’re good holes and then the the last few just come back again and they’re just they’re just great really good. They’ve got the potential there to make it so long as well. I mean I I was saying to a couple of guys that the first I mean we played in a it was really windy and most of the holes especially the first few were right into the teeth of the wind but the first hole par five I hit driver I could have hit 3-wood. I didn’t want to wait for people to leave the green so I didn’t but I probably could have got there maybe 3-wood. There’s a T 150 yards further back that they can use if they wanted. They can make it really really long. Really long. But it it was good just it goes back to the the debate we had about the ball and courses becoming too short. Again, the wind didn’t help but there’s a lot of holes I was hitting long irons and I I quite enjoyed it even though it’s harder than obviously hitting wedges in. But I enjoyed it hitting lots of different clubs. You don’t really get that every every week. Yeah. It takes you through the bag. Yeah. Yeah. I like, you know, 540 yards. You hit a drive 3wood. I’d be hitting drive threewood as well. Donald, would you? Yeah. Drive 3-wood and then whatever was left. Yeah. N It’s funny to say that a 540 yard per five is reachable in two into the wind. It’s just not, you know, it’s not reachable. No, no, not not in Aberdine. I would definitely not be playing off of that that team. But, but the golf course is spectacular. Yeah. Absolutely brilliant. That’s the the best way to describe it. Probably my number one. I don’t think I’ve played anything I can say that is that’s better than that. I thought it was great. Yeah. Just a shame it’s all the way up. But yeah, good. Peter, what have I been up to? I’ve been watching the Masters. Right. And Dor, you been doing the same? Nothing. Seriously? Yeah, I had one game of golf, but yeah, been watching the Masters and just working a lot. Yeah. All right. I do that occasionally. Okay. Well, we just Too many late nights. Well, we just talk about the Masters. We’ve got we’ve got the M we’re going to talk about a bit of the Masters and then we’re going to do our quizzes and fantasy golf and then we’re going to come back to the Masters. So, it’s basically a Masters chat, right? So, let’s start with Masters. Gary Player rates the Masters fourth out of four in his favorites of majors. Where does it where does it rank in yours, Andy? I I think number one. Yeah, I think it’s the most I enjoy. It also helps I think that you I get to watch most of it, you know, the time wise. I always like it when the open comes around, but then half the time you’re working and you don’t actually get to see that much anyway. So, I think the time of night it’s on is good as well. But I I I love it. I love it. I’m glad Sunday felt like a normal masters as well. I think Saturday with the weather. Again, I do quite enjoy seeing the guys struggle, but I just think you’ve got to have the sun. You’ve got to see it firm. I think it’s it’s a better spectacle when you see it like that. So, I’m glad Sunday just seemed felt a bit more like a normal master. It does always look it looks amazing. It’s like how do they get it to look like that every year? Do they bring in special lighting or something? You know, like or the greens the grass is even greener, you know, like it’s just it’s an amazing place, isn’t it? I think they they used to spray the grass, didn’t they? With green spray green. Yeah, they did. They used to go into the ponds, didn’t it? You see all the ponds being a bit green? Sometimes I wonder that, you know, like on the bank at 12, like the grass is growing perfectly at the water line and I went, how do how did that happen? How do they do that? Cuz there’s normally a bit of mud there. Do you know what I mean? Well, but they they commented in that this year, I’m sure, that the that how much better it was, but they’re com more about the the kind of hollow over the green. Uh I don’t know whether it’s been the sub ear system or whatever, but they’ve got that looking much better with with the work they’ve done on it. Yeah, they did. They said they used to get a few scraggy lies and stuff for that tricky little chip. But yeah, we never noticed it, which is maybe why they had they just painted it or something. Yeah, I believe so. Crazy. I was They’ve got the birds cheaping and everything like that. That’s speakers and yeah, all over the golf course that they do that as well. So, that is it. So, it’s awesome looking at I was impressed with how quickly they moved the tree as well. You saw these guys out with chainsaws and, you know, sawdust everywhere and then next time you see it, you just wouldn’t even know it’d ever been there. Yeah, they they’ve got a few people in sight to help. Yeah. Yeah. I thought the golf course itself, I mean, like they obviously 13 was the big one, wasn’t it, with the with the change. Um, and I loved it. I I you know, like before the tournament, all the players going, “No, we’re just going to lay up and all that.” You’re not you’re not going to lay up if you got four iron. So, I I thought that brought the hole back to what it should be. You’re trying to hug the creek down the left. Um, it it’s not as far back as everyone thinks. Yes, it’s 35 yards, but also the te’s raised up, what was it? seven or eight feet in the air or something like that. So, it’s not really 35 once you take that off it. But, yeah, no, it made the hole back to what it should be. It needs a good drive with the right shape. Um, you know, Ram’s well documented. He was practicing draws a lot more leading into this event, but that that that was a proper golf hole again. I thought I thought it was getting bullied and and that made it a much better hole. Well, there was no there was no wedges in. There was no people head over the tree. It it was played it was played the way that it was meant to be. A good drive, you can go for it. That’s what they said. Bobby Jones said, you know, it should be a, you know, an awesome second shot to hit it onto that green, you know, and as Faldo talked about many times quite a few times. That’s my sprinkler sprinkler. Yeah, he was hitting two iron. Yeah, these guys were only hitting five now. Yeah, same loft. But yeah. Yeah, but it was it was it was it made the whole much better. Yeah, much better. Not everybody was going for it. You did see a lot more layups this year. Having said that, I did see that the scoring average was lower this year than last year on that hole. But I think that was more to do with the fact that greens were so soft that they’re just lumping it in its landing and spludging on the green. Probably not many as many balls in the water maybe cuz there weren’t weren’t as many going for him too. I think that’s a fair point as well. Maybe. Yes. Yeah. But no, I think I think Yeah, the Augusta seem to always just get it right, don’t they? It’s like the USG just seemed to always get USGA seemed to always get it wrong, but Augusta seemed to always get it right. It’s like all this we’re going to come on to the live stuff, but there was no live chatter. It was just like Augusta just like this is the masters. We just don’t care about anything else. Just get let’s just correct. Pete sent a text at one point saying, you know, I wish they would talk about, you know, the PGA versus live and I sent back, no, this is the masters. That’s that’s what the chat is. And it was great that they left it at that. Yeah. the only I didn’t get to see it all cuz it was working weird. But I I would say that um I barely saw a shot of Bryson and um and he’s still a big name in the game. So I barely saw him swing a swing a golf club. He wasn’t in contention or there well nor was Rory. Um but I know he’s world number as big as Rory in the game. I know he’s still but look if he was I don’t know. Anyway, that but that’s nothing to do with the Masters anyway. That’s the coverage. That’s CBS or whoever was covering it. Do Okay, simple question then. Do you think that you have your cams, your live guys who are they’re big names in the live game. Do you think you genuinely saw there was no disparity between their names and how many shots you’ve seen? Yeah, I don’t think that has anything to do with the Masters. Okay. I think that’s TV coverage. Whoever’s doing that. Yeah, whoever whoever’s editing all that. I I I I felt there was a tiny little snippet of not seeing enough of the guy the live guys. I I don’t know. I just How much did you see of Shane Lowry? Okay. Well, I I would say that the two of the live guys came through the field at the last minute, you know, Reed and Mickelson. Yeah. So, they were never really in contention, were they? Uh, you know, like But DJ didn’t see much of DJ and I didn’t see much of 100 over par. Well, he wasn’t. He was Oh, DJ wasn’t, but he dropped back a we never in it. That was just my that was my only negative against the against the coverage would be the fact I felt it was still a little bit biased towards the PGA guys or the normal normal guys um over them. But look it’s it was always going to be that way as well. Okay. The live guys are lucky they put them on the leaderboard. They could have just left them out. I think you know like I asked the question favorite major. Well I’ll ask Peter is it your favorite major? Is it your second? I I think as a spectator um yes, my favorite major. I think as a if as a player um I would I would love to win the the the the open but as a spectator same same reasons Andy said it’s it’s the time of night you can have a beer and watch it. Um whereas the the open or the British Open’s on during the day. So yeah, as a but as a player that they open. You know you know why it’s our favorite major. Obviously it’s m cuz it’s the same course every year again. No, no, it’s massive. And we all roll the golf course cuz every other course changes. 100%. I love the golf course. And I love it because I was sitting watching it with my father-in-law who clearly doesn’t watch a lot of golf at all. And he didn’t know the golf course. And you know, these guys I love the fact that I know what’s happening up front. You know, you’re going, “Oh, these guys are birding, but ah, but wait a minute, Colin. These guys are still to come through to 13 and 15.” you know, they’ve got a couple holes in the front nies from 13 right through to 17. Really, I love I love the fact that we know that’s going to happen. And all these holes is even though they’re birdie holes, you know that there’s also a disaster there. Oh, 100%. Yeah. One thing I would say is quite often maybe in the first couple of rounds is um the guys were were beating up the front nine more than normal. I felt there’s quite a few guys going through the bend at, you know, three, four under. I thought that that’s pretty rare, but first round the scoring was ridiculous. Uhhuh. It’s just soft and it was no wind. I mean, it was there to be beaten up, but and it did get beaten up by what, two or three of them. But all in all, the courses the the course holds up every year. Like Stuart said, they just they’ve got their they’ve got their their foot on the P or the finger figure finger on the pulse. Finger on the pulse. You know like for example the eighth I could see Augusta National bringing that back the T bringing that back 5 10 yards max next year just because there was your Cam Young’s almost taking that bunker play and that makes that T-shot phenomenal and I just I think they’ll not want that. I don’t think that’s a T-shot hole. I see that as being you know are they going high up over the trees and hitting a fade or they’re hitting the roping hook. Great. I think it’s a it’s a second shot kind of hole. But disagree that’s fine. I I well I just think if if you get more and more of those guys bursting it over and there wasn’t many but there was enough to make them start start to think about it is all I’m saying because because it is a second shot. You’re right. But it’s an easy second shot in terms of you’re not really ever really got a hard chip. Let’s be honest. I mean know they’re very good at chipping and make it look really easy. But it’s one that you want them to have to veer the T-shot off towards the trees and if they’re just lumping it. We’re so we’re so familiar with the golf course though like the green at a you know you know we know where the swaps are on the greens. You know, at 14 on the last day, they need to pitch at 10 ft left and you get it spinning down. You know, as soon as it hits the green, I’m watching it with Ken. And I know it’s perfect. And he’s going, “Well, it’s not that good.” And I know it’s going to happen. And I love that, you know, like there’s no other golf course, I don’t think, anywhere in the world that you feel like that. For me, it’s my favorite major. I would rather, you said you’d rather win the Open. I think I’d rather win the Masters. I think it’s Oh, it’s cooler. Yeah, it’s very, very close. It’s very close. You’ve got to achieve a wee bit to get into the Masters. Yeah. So, you’ve had a decent career to get there. Yeah. Yeah. I don’t know. I would still say the Open’s number one just but buting the Masters. I kind of feel like I should say the Open is the number one as well. I don’t know. It’s maybe not. Anyway, it’s there’s no big deal in that. Open and Masters are one and two for for sure. Oh, 100 100%. But then the I think the Americans quite like their their US Open, so they they wouldn’t be saying that. You know, we’re obviously biased. Yeah. Yeah, the cream always seems to rise at top at Augusta, doesn’t it? Why is that? I mean, generally, I know that there’s players that don’t, but the leaderboard always ends up being pretty bloody good, doesn’t it? Yeah. Well, it’s a lot to do with the fact there’s Well, sorry, this is maybe completely wrong, but um it’s it’s it’s a short field, isn’t it? I mean, there is only good names up there. I mean, you you can you can take off the drags. It’s really a 40 50 man 40man field, isn’t it? It’s like a live event. Oh, there’s there’s certain players though that you just know are going to be that it’s maybe it’s just a horses for courses kind of place. I think that you just hit the nail on the head there. I think experience tends to to shine through as well like you know it’s the it’s one major probably more than any other that a guy might not have played any good golf for the last six years and then he suddenly goes up there like a like a Louisen or melson even Bubba Watson sort of went through little well kind of long spells and not playing well and then he’s just up there. I think exper whether that’s experience or all the course suits them really well I don’t know but yeah it’s like it’s like almost the their members advantage almost couples I mean couples it’s like honestly every year couples is first first on the leaderboard in the first round isn’t he I mean it seems like forever but maybe not who who’s he Fred couple yeah just favorite golfer of all time he was the reason I got into the game I wasn’t you know obviously before tiger but Freddy Cup was the reason I into the game and I I I just I I love everything about him, man. Cuz even though he’s using a yellow golf ball, um with that Well, you know, Pete, he just he’s just he’s just class, isn’t he? The man’s class. I love it. I used to think he was the coolest guy ever, right? With his Ashworth and his hair. He never wore a cap, did he? His hair and his Ashworth t-shirts. You look back at it now, you see pictures of him wearing oversized like why why were we wearing t-shirts that were three sizes too big? Donald, where did you find a t-shirt? I’m just leaving bed sheet. That was just a fashion of the time. Stuart with Faldo’s green jacket as well. It’s about four sizes too big. Yeah. Bulbin have been providing commercial finance solutions to UKmemes since 2013. Bdulbin, driving your business forward. Uh let’s start with uh I’m going to go we’re going to go through some players, but we’ll have to start with Rory because Rory Well, we know he missed the cut. I actually listened to Faldo. Fo’s got a podcast. he’s decided to come and compete with us. Uh so he’s got his podcast like it’s round table chats with Nick Fo or something like that and he was his first guest was Jack Nicholas. It was really good. You should go and listen to that one. Jack Nicholas. Decent guest. It’s a good way to start as a we didn’t quite start that way. It was just me and you, Donald. Uh but yeah. Yeah. No, and and Nicholas did say along the like something along the lines of Rory just lacks that little bit of intensity or focus sometimes that some of the top players ever don’t seem to. I think when was that podcast? Was that before? Recently. Yeah. Before the Masters. Yes. And then I just thought it was ridiculous. The interview on course with Rory just unbelievable. Yeah, I can’t I can’t believe he agreed to that in the I mentioned this in the podcast about three four weeks ago and said I don’t think you’ll get someone like a Rory doing one of these or he definitely would have got a tiger and Roy did it and I was the same as you. I was kind of flabbergasted that he was doing it. He did it in the masters. But I just it wasn’t a run-of-the-mill event he done it in. Yeah. You know, it’s even more ridiculous that it was in a major in the one major. I don’t like what they’re doing. I don’t like what the TV is trying to do there and getting like they’re I don’t come in your office when you’re when you’re doing your work or when you’re signing the big old contract that that’s all they’re doing. They’re they’re they’re getting involved. We don’t we don’t need we don’t need that as a viewer, I don’t think. Well, you you don’t. But I think a lot of people love it to hear before. He’s only ever going to give you the bog standard answer and that’s all he did. But but other people don’t realize that. But I get it for other events and and stuff like that, but not in a major. Yeah. Did you see it, Andy? the I didn’t see the interview. No. All right. The Sorry, he put me off there because I was hoping you would say something. He’s walk he’s walking up the ninth. Yeah. And telling him, asking him how he feels, what where where he is, what he’s going to do. It’s just crazy. He’s come out afterwards and said, you know, I’ve done it before. I did it at the whatever tournament. And to be honest, it didn’t put me off my game at all. And if it adds anything to the fans at home, then I’m absolutely delighted to do it. doesn’t put me off at all. You know, like is it not the case that Yeah, it seems a bit wrong, but not everybody. I mean, Nick Faldo would never be interviewed. Tiger would never be interviewed, but probably if you’d gone back in time, Lee Tina would have been all over these interviews. That that was his character. I just feel like Rory’s taken on too much responsibilities in this game. A little bit too much. And when we go back to the the Nicholas comment, so he’s part of the committee. He’s he’s he’s probably done that interview. In fact, he said it he was delighted to be the first ever to do it at the Masters. Um, it’s all these sort of things he’s doing. He’s the outspoken one for the tour against other things. He’s the guy he’s taken on an awful lot. Just concentrate on your golf. Forget it. He’s a he’s a brilliant guy to to interview um, you know, for the for the media because he gives you more more back. He doesn’t give you your Tiger Woods answers. But there’s a time and a and a place I just think he needs just he needs to just get in his little cave and just ignore the world and just get hardened up. We’ve said last year that we felt that the live thing made him better because he was Yeah. Well, let’s go back when we’re done. You Pete. No, I I actually I think he’s pandering too much to the media at the moment. Yes, he maybe is. I don’t know. And he needs to he maybe needs to just take a we step back for that to concentrate in his golf a wee bit more. Well, but this is after one event. I mean, he’s been playing so well up until now, dealing with all this winning. He’s been up in the contention every single week and then he dives at the the I mean, why is it suddenly a problem this week? It wasn’t a problem anyway. Because it’s because it’s a major. So, they should so they should change the way they do things for these tournaments. I mean, they always said some of them do. Well, because it’s a major. Because it’s a chance win the grand slam. Because it’s the golf course that he always messes up around. But there’s loads of history with him around this golf course. It’s not just a major. It’s it’s the major he really needs in his resume and it’s the major that that he should have had in his resume everyone says that he should have won. Does that mean he tries harder though or does that not mean that he needs to What he needs to do is focus and it’s changing the focus a bit more. Yeah. What did Brooks always Brooks always focused on what? He’s a different person. No, he’s a different person. They’re all different. Brooks always focus on what? I don’t know. On the majors. All right. He always said that. Well, that’s fine for him. What what I mean that’s that’s where all the greats that they they’re they try to peak at these times a year for the majors they’re all closer together. What I’m saying does it mean that does that mean that for every other event you know Macro goes through all other events doing whatever he does and then he has to sudden somehow like focus more and and practice differently or or speak to the media less or do it all differently for the majors because he’s he’s on focus mode. Is there not a danger that that means he’s coming out of what makes him work as a golfer? You know, like Well, it’s clearly not working at the majors. Okay. No, you’re right. You’re right. You mean I I heard this in our broadcast. You know, since Rory last won his major, both Tiger and Phil have won a major. Yeah. At their age. And Rory hasn’t won one, you know. So, so, so he does have to change something for the majors. He does. And Stuart’s right. Look, if you got a winning formula, you shouldn’t change it for one event or one or four events a year. If your winning formula is good, go with it. But majors are different. So, so the whole sort of um you know, there’s no proam for a start. So, your your practice rounds you they tend to turn up a couple days early, then you got that DAFF par 3 tournament. It’s just different. It’s a different week. So, you can’t go in with the same formula as you go in with to the Phoenix Open or whatever you want to call. Um so, there is a difference. there’s a disparity, but the media players is much higher as well. Everything’s elevated. Yeah, absolutely. Magnifying things do have to change. He just hasn’t found that formula in recent years for the majors. That’s all. That’s all I I Yeah. So, I can agree with you, but I don’t I probably agree with a lot of what you’re saying. Uh and I probably don’t agree with me. I’m just, you know, but he looks to me as though he’s got so much pressure on himself. Whether it’s him putting it on, whether it’s the media putting it on, he just looks like he’s got so much pressure on himself from the off. But even BBC, you know, I saw their little crappy thing that they did the golf on a on a Thursday morning. Maroy is, you know, here to win to complete the Grand Slam. Every single year he has to hear that crap, you know. Does he really go into there thinking I really win this for the even even Tiger’s interview like just before it started, he said he won. You know, Tiger was saying Royal won it. Absolutely won it. And you think you wouldn’t go and ask Brooks Kepka if John Ram’s going to win this week. They would never even think of that. It’s competitors. They’re asking someone because their pali and Tiger will say Rory will win it and it puts more emphasis on Rory. Did he say he’ll win it? Not this year, but he’ll win. He’ll win. He didn’t say this year. No, no, no, no. He he will win one. Look, we could talk about this all you want. End of the day, he wasn’t at the races with his game. But but but what I don’t understand is right why it was it’s been so good and so consistently good for so long and then you get to this event and suddenly like I mean it’s a cut that I mean you said to me Donald they should never miss the cut of the Masters cuz it is a small field event. Was there 80 people playing? 50 make the cut. 15 of those some of them were as Pete said, you know, it’s a love event, do you know? Well, basically, how can you make how can you miss a cut? Well, basically you take off the the drags of your um you know, I call it drags. They’re not drags, but Larry M, Sandy L. Yeah. Sorry, Sandy. But yeah. Yeah. I mean, like those guys that aren’t really in the in the mix, then you’ve got a very very shortened field. So to Miff look, but that shorten field is still good and it still numbers tells you you can miss the cut. you can still miss the cut. The cut was only what two two three three over tough conditions. It’s easy done. But this is what we talk about about the best of the best, which Rory is. Um he’s one of them. You just don’t do that. That’s He’s not even close though, was he? Like I mean, you know, a couple of years he’s been in contention and the odd part’s not dropped or whatever. He’s It seems to be his whole game was just capitulated. Yeah. It just feels it’s so frustrating because I feel like he’s always he’s always got seven under in him. So there’s never any pressure on him to get a fast start or anything. He can kind of just get into things, shoot a couple under, one under, and then suddenly there’s the seven under, and you’re bam, you’re in there. And and oh, it’s so frustrating to see him play so bad. I feel like we’re talking a lot about Rory here when it was just a small small story in the week. It was just like, yeah, it just didn’t work out for him. But that that that is the type of golfer Rory can be. He can be sort of hot and cold. I kind of feel I know he’s been hot for a decent amount of time, but he he just picked he picked the wrong week to have his bad week. Yeah. Nobody’s good every week. I think he’s also being compared. The top three at the minute seem to be so far ahead and I I don’t think it helps when the other two and I know Ram withdrew one of them and whatnot, but the other two you just don’t really seem you don’t I can’t see them dropping the way that Rory does in the odd event and I think he’s kind of held against that at the minute. You know, the top three are the ones that should be competing, you know, but it doesn’t it doesn’t do very often. I mean, he has a bad he has a bad event and it finishes fifth. Yeah. Fourth. Never outside the top 10, but then this week that’s Well, that’s basically what you’re saying. Yeah. I mean, a bad week for Rory there should have been a top 10. That’s what I mean. Yeah. I mean, last year you’re saying he hasn’t hasn’t been doing well in the majors. Well, he was second at the open last year. I can’t remember his other ones, but No, no, I didn’t say he hasn’t been doing well in the majors. I said he hasn’t won one, right? It’s hard to win, Donald. Hard to win. Uh let’s let’s take on Tiger now. D WD is the greatest of all time potentially. Uh Fenito now, I mean, we’ve asked this before. or is he finished? Look, he you can never say he’s finished because physically he could improve, but at this moment in time with his physical No, there’s certain shots there. What was the shot? He was on the 18th and he was foot in the bunker and you’re just like, is that leg going to snap? I mean, this is just like Christ. Just go. Just leave the sport at the moment. Come back when you’re fit. He’s still got all the shots. He’s got the hands. No, he just go tiger at the moment. Come back. But at the moment, as I said, I thought he should have bowed out at St. Andrews last year. We should have said goodbye now. Starting to come round. He’s not going to he’s I know he’s a freak, but he’s not going to compete now. No, I think this week probably made it. Everything was against him. Hard walking course. It was cold. The weather they’ve had to play. There was another There was another shot he hit. It was the second shot into the ninth on whatever day. Second first day, second day maybe. And it was like on a slope ball below his feet. I saw that. But he looked like he was on like the biggest slope in the world. I mean, he was like almost his bum was almost touching the ground trying to stand to this thing so he didn’t snap his leg. I’m like, “This is just a faded lie. What are you doing?” And I was just like that to me straight off the bat was was time. It’s the first time it’s becoming sad to me. And I I love Tiger and I would love for him to come back and compete, but it’s quite sad watching him. He’s quite old now. He’s 47. He’s already said, and I find it really strange to think because if there was one guy I would think he’s never going to play seniors tour golf as Tiger Woods, and he’s come out this weekend and said that he would love to play. He’s he’s got his eyes on the seniors tour. Cuz he’s still got that in in the brain. I know I’m with you. But he’s still super competitive. Is he going to make it there? I mean, there’s certain people who seem to get to seniors tour and it’s like they’ve really got another wind in them then. But I feel like Tiger, he’s going to be like a broken man. Is it going to be I don’t think you’re winning this in your Ste ga last week he was going about um Harrington I mean you put those two up against each other right now and obviously Harrington’s not a patching Tiger but Harrington is still improving as a player but feel like Tiger’s just kind of hanging on for a bit of what he had. It’s a little bit of that going on and these guys are still trying to improve. I think I think the big thing about this week is is the weather was against him. He had to play more than 18 holes in the cold and everything that so everything as you said shoot was against him. Uh, but yeah, I think he should go. Jason Day said that the his withdrawal from the PGA last year, one of his pins came through the skin of his leg. He was playing. I’m joking. I mean, that is quite serious. A [ __ ] See, what’s that? This This is the sort of thing Tiger does. He doesn’t let you into the little how how much pain he’s in. You know, remember Bryson getting attacked by that um rope when he tried to get underneath the rope? I mean, and he was like almost hospitalized because it flicked his eyebrow. And Tiger’s got pins flying out his leg and he’s just like, “Yeah, whatever.” You know, I just didn’t put very well today or something. I mean, that’s just the guy he is. He goes through more rehab physio be like was saying it would be 3 hours before, 3 hours afterwards. Days longer than you think, especially playing 36 holes almost. Yeah, he he’s a try out, but oh god, the amount he puts his body through. It’s sad to see he’s limping from the first hole as well. I mean, it’s not like it’s, you know, third round. He’s starting to feel it now. He’s limping from the very off, you know. I don’t think he’ll play the next two majors. He might turn up at Hoy Lake, but I think that might be it this year. Anyway, that’s it’s amazing that he takes up still takes up chat. You know, a guy that’s actually broken and every shot every shot gets shown, doesn’t it? He he could be 10. You’re missing the cut by 10 shots and you still see all his shots. He still hits phenomenal shots, but then his like sort of safety shot, his body’s not f like the stinger, for example. I I say this to people all the time. I I feel like that was his um that’s his safe shot. That’s not like a shot to impress. That’s just like hit the fairway. I’m just going to squeeze it. It just so happens his squeeze looks unbelievable. So everyone’s a tiger stinger. I’m like that’s that’s a second that’s a second serve as I would call it. That’s just something to get him in play. He’s not able to hit that anymore cuz the body’s not working as fast. So therefore he flips them or blocks them. But um that’s the sort of stuff he’s not got anymore. So then he’s having to hit these beautiful lovely T- shots and that’s just not who he was. He was always like a get the ball in the hole in the least amount of shots. Talking about uh injury, Will Torres is out for a year. He he went through back surgery on Saturday. Did he start on Thursday? Yeah, I think he did start. So he withdrew uh back surgery Saturday and that’s him out for the rest of the year. Um quite I mean for they’re going to improve his button stroke. I hope it’s hopefully the time off does something. But yeah, I mean it’s it’s crazy because he’s only really had one year. Is it one year as a PG tour player? Well, it took must be a couple. But there was a year that he didn’t get into the FedEx cup. He wasn’t even a member of the tour. Didn’t get in the FedEx Cup because he wasn’t a member of the tour even though he was 30th or something in the And last year was his only full year. And then this year he’s out. It’s and and you know, it’s crazy somebody so young. It’s a weird career, isn’t it? so far if you think of it in those terms. But really, really weird. I mean, phenomenal talent, but yeah, it’s it’s I suppose these young modern golf swings are doing to the body sometimes. Yeah. So, we’re up there with you when you see Sam Bennett as well. Well, I was going to go on that later, but 100%. So, he’s got so much he’s got so much side bends come impact that it’s putting so much pressure on your lower back. And that’s the modern I mean Havlin got a wee bit of I can’t remember but there’s there’s definitely Zelator which he was trying to change his swing to to compensate for done it a we bit late obviously but that guy Bennett is going to have the same problems unless he they not longevity career golf swing and I know went about Bryson not having longevity with the speed but but he had a golf swing that could that worked for the body. He’s realized that very quickly though hasn’t he Bryson? I think he’s already toned it back. Yeah, but it was the speed that he put in. wasn’t like a funny angle of attack back angles. I mean, we’re talking like that guy Bennett is over at like I don’t know degrees 45. I mean, there’s so much sort of bend going on there. The lower back’s going to give in years to come. Um, unless he possibly don’t know. We said that for a while that we don’t think the modern golfer is going to have the same longevity as I’ve said that for the same longevity as some of these older guys. Yeah. You know, your Bernard Langers and because of the speed they’re they’re swinging at. and what they’re doing doing to the the pressures to create that speed. They’re putting the bodies in different angles which is I don’t think he he doesn’t even get lessons. I mean, he’s not got a just coach in the bag. Oh, right. All right. Okay. So, he does get lessons. Uh but it’s a very individual swing. I mean, you would never teach that, would you? There’s not many of them. I saw side by side with that wacky Neman. They were identical. Neman actually had even more. He was tilting over even more than what then it was. Surely everybody everybody’s body is different as well. And Lee Reino did that a bit, didn’t he? In here. People can’t see what I just did. But you you just said, you know, but you wouldn’t teach that. But that’s that’s wrong. You you teach the player unless unless you’re teaching a method that and you’re saying everybody’s got to do that method of of course you teach that. You just teach to prove that you just do tweaks. Exactly. But at what point do you see a really talented or just never bother? So you’ve got a really talented 16-year-old and they do that bendy thing down and hurt their back and it’s they’re brilliant and they’re winning all the junior events, they’re getting in, they’re winning the US amateur, everything. At what point do you go, right, do you want to have a long career or short career because we’ll need to do something about this otherwise you’re going to be finished by the time you’re 30. Or do you do you just never touch it? You don’t touch it too much cuz if you change it, they might not have a career. I know and that’s a difficult bit, isn’t it? Because how do you Well, you’re 100% right. So, everyone’s got the fingerprint. That’s what makes him That’s what’s making Sam Bennett a good golfer is is his ability to get in there and he knows the release patterns from all that stuff, but at some point you might have to I don’t know if I would, but at some point you might have to say, “Look, brilliant, but if we could just ease off that just to just to give your body a chance for or you’ve got to do a lot more in the gym to to make up for this.” Or do you wait? Do you do you do the Zurus and go, “Right, I’ll make my first 5 million, 10 million first and then I’ll then I’ll do it.” I don’t know. When’s the right thing? When’s the right time? Well, Zelator has at least got the money in the bank. If he changed and never made a penny, might never heard him, right? One of So, so you’ve got you’ve you’ve got to go when you’re hot. One of the guys said the other day, I can’t remember who who it was, one of the ex players said that he turned Will Zarat turned at 120 million to go to to Livolf. They came in with 20 million or something, then they came out with 120 and he turned it down. But I suppose we don’t also know if that is directly because of his swing. I mean, he could just have something. Yeah. But it’s also very true. Yeah. Okay. Okay. It’s two things I’ve said today that have been correct. Well done. But again, going back to your man Bennett, unless we’re going to talk about him later, but um I just when I was watching him, I was just thinking of you, Stuart, and I was thinking how much you’re you’re slagging the Hogards. I say, “Come on in. Where are you, G? You’re do something. You know, you’re not impressed me yet.” Like Peter keeps saying that you’re going to be the next superstars. Um this guy Bennett’s 23, your whole guards are 21. This was my point last week. They’re out there doing it already. He is he’s had a great masters, don’t get me wrong, but do you know what? He’s he’s in the college system. He’s going to come out a bit later. The Hog Guards are But he comes out the college system a man. The Hog Guards are playing professional golf as boys and and they’re maybe not boys. I’ve never met the guys. But yeah, I do think the American system is great. Like I’d never thought about it like that. And that that says it all, doesn’t it? Well, hopefully hopefully they don’t pick up scar tissue by the time they’re his age. But let’s say he comes out and tour he’s 24 roughly. Um the whole guards be 24. Hope they the Hogards have either got massive amount of experience compared to a man like Bennett or they’ve got tons of scar tissue. So it just depends the way you look at it. Bennett finished 16th this week which is an amazing finish really and he was right up there obviously. He was what lying second after two rounds was it? Or was he just outside? Um I was looking back at other notable amateurs in recent years. Right. So Hovlin finished 32nd as an amateur in 2019. Uh who else? Bryson was 21st as an amateur. Hideki was 27th as an amateur 2011. And Ryan Moore was the best one in recent memory. Finished in 13th in 2005. Remember Ryan Moore the kind of posy thing at the top. Nicholas was seventh in 61. So uh but yeah. Um live golfers. Can we just talk quickly just I know we’ve kind of touched it but the three of the four three of the top four were live golfers this week. Um join joined fourth. Oh okay. Well, three three golfers in the top fourth though. Yeah. Is that is that okay? Is that a better way of saying it? Three golfers in the top four. No. Okay. Yeah. Or three golfers in the top. There was six. Three of them tied fourth, wasn’t there? All right. Okay. But yeah, they finished fourth. Yep. They had a strong finish. But it sounds it sound when you say three out of the top four, you’re saying 75% of them. But yeah, no, but it wasn’t quite that. It’s really three out of seven. Okay. Okay. But um what does it remind do you think it reminds us all of what we’re missing? Yeah, you can speak into the microphone Peter. Yes, 100% it does. Yeah. And and there was obviously there was um pre-event you were thinking of DJ Cam Smith. Uh maybe Patrick Reed, but then your Mickelson’s thrown in there. Um and he was never in it. He was never No, he was never in it to well to No, not really. Mroy finished second last year. You know, it’s he was never in it. He had a good last round. No, you’re right. But no, they are they are they are class class players and you do get forgotten of really really quickly in this sport. And that that’s unfortunately what’s going to happen to a lot of these guys unless lift turns around and makes it into what what it it said it was going to be. But yeah, they’re class golfers. You put them in any field, they’re going to do, you know, they know how to get the ball in the hole. Yeah. And and that’s around a golf course that they’ve played a lot. Yeah. But the the the one thing does it make you want to go and watch love golf? No. No, not at all. But what it did sort of, you know, again, we’ll come on to Brooks in a wee bit, but you know, Brooks goes on about Majors is a season and that’s it. And that’s that’s the thing, like you said earlier, Donald, Majors is your your kind of that’s what you’re trying to peak for. Yeah. And and Brooks never really cared about the PG events in his mind. So Liv’s perfect for him, isn’t it? Cuz those ones he don’t really care about. He’s playing for 4 million in live. So it seems like a perfect tour for him. Although I know he doesn’t really love it, but did you see his interview or his quote that he he came out and said, “If I was this healthy at the time of being offered live, I probably wouldn’t have taken it.” I think he really thought physically he was well, he was struggling big time. Yeah. And they said to him, you know, is it mentally you’ve kind of changed, you know, to compete this week? He’s I’m healthy. So my body’s kind of wasn’t it’s it’s better than what it was when I when I kind of for me it just the whole tournament just felt like this is what this is what it should be. you know, all the best players in the world should be there. And I’m sure Brooks came out with a comment online, so it’s nice to sort of rate yourself against these guys again. There was a phrase that he used. It wasn’t those words exactly, so please don’t quote that. But, um, it is a case of, “Oh, yes, we get get out against the Live players are now saying, “Oh, we can get out against the best in the world all of a sudden.” It feel it feels like that’s their chance to go out and and prove themselves in a in a world stage again, whereas they’re not really able to do that in live. I don’t I think we know that. I think I don’t think anyone would would deny that if pushed, would they? No, probably not. No, I just I just feel like for the sake of the game, it’s like for the sake of the game, it felt right this week. The g the game felt right. Yeah. But so all this crap with Liv and the PG tour and the European tour for us at home, I mean, that’s for them as businesses, you know, like businesses. Oh, it is a business for us. For us as us at home, I couldn’t care less about the PGA Tour really or the European tour. I just want all the best players to be playing together, you know? And it feels like for the sake of golf, can we not find the truth here? And like I find a way even if you say right, they’re not allowed to have European PGA Tour cards, but you can get some invites or something. Just a way to get them in against the rest of the players more often cuz it’s a shame that we’re only going to see this four times a year, you know. And and it was it was good that they did compete and that can only help towards that. uh some sort of truth when they when they see these guys competing and seeing that it does add something to their event, they’re bound to go, we are missing something, you know. So hopefully and I think Augusta did do a really good job, like we said earlier, of not turning it into a live versus the PGA. You know, I’m assuming commentary we’re probably told not to make a big deal of it. They didn’t mention it that much and I thought that was really really good. I don’t know when we get to the next majors whether or not it’ll turn back again of oh it’s live against PGA. I don’t know if it was just because of that week or or not, but I thought it was good. You It was the first time in a long time you just saw all all the good players are competing here and it wasn’t just them against us kind of thing. Yeah, I think it was good. I think we didn’t think too much about live. I think Mickelson was in a very um I felt maybe completely wrong cuz I didn’t watch at all but quite a low key all week in terms of amuse fist pumps or crowd interaction. I felt he was on low key. I don’t know whether that was actually I think they them as players will want to prove that this isn’t a big deal. I’m playing on a different tour. I’m coming here to play the Masters. They I don’t think he No, but that’s what I’m saying. He he to me looked like he was consciously Yeah. on low key. Not if he was doing what you’re saying then he would have been his usual winding up the crowd kind of thing. 150 thumbs up. How much weight has he lost by the way? A lot. Yeah. He looks gaunt. He looks ill. I think I didn’t think he looked good. I I thought he looked good actually. Oh, you thought good. I thought he looked a bit just what I’m used to looking. It was even his legs just looked very tigerish at the m there’s nothing there. Yes. No, that’s what I thought. Yeah, but you got to remember his age when you start to Yeah. I thought I thought he was looking well to be fair. Yep. It was interesting hearing though uh them talking about the fans how the fans were much more cheering for John Ram than for Brooks because the fans out in the course it was a PG love thing for the for the American public. They’re the patrons. Sorry, the patrons. Uh I I were much more and that was the fuel they got. It was because of the PJ and live thing that I was about to say a Spaniard was getting was getting more uh likes from the the patrons than than Brooks Cape. I was about to say I thought the fans were quite good towards them. You know, I didn’t think they kind of gave them just obviously from watching on on TV. I didn’t think that they gave them too much I didn’t abuse. But yeah, I didn’t see it through the telly. But maybe you’re right on. Oh, well, I heard it on another for guys that were there. That’s what that’s what they were coming up with. I think you’re doing different. It was Patrick Reed competing like that. Yeah. Okay. So, we’re we’re going to go on to uh praabin quiz and then come back to the masters. So, last week’s question was a Steven Gallifer Steven Gallifer. Gallifer a Steven Gallagher question uh which was which W sorry DP World Tour event did Steven successfully defend in 2014? And the answer was, Andy, I have no idea. I knew you were going to look at me there. I knew you were going to look at me. I only asked you cuz I didn’t think you’d know the answer. It’s kind of sad actually, Andy. Sorry. You know, you need to start paying more attention to golf. He’s my nemesis now. My nemesis. Uh, but yeah, the the correct answer of course was Peter. Uh, the the Dubai Desert Classic. Yes. And the winner big one. If I was if I was to have to guess, that’s what I would have gone. Uh the winner um and winning a bottle a water bottle. God, I’m really struggling with that now. I joke a bottle of water. Donald was giving you the eyes there in case you got that wrong. Yeah. Um signed by Steven Gallaer. And he also wrote as promised, hydrate or die. Uh the winner was David Haldane. So well done David. You will receive your Broly and your signed bottle from Steven Galler. Uh this week’s question is a Donald question and the question is Donald. The question is uh how many European golfers have won both the Masters and the US Open? You don’t have to name them all, but just give us the number. How many How many have won the US Masters and the US Open? Name them all. Name them all. Both of them. Hey, sorry. Did I say that? Uh, and if you know the answer to this question of Donald’s, uh, you need to email it to golf finance.co.uk and you will be in with a chance of winning next week’s prize. So, oh, well, we should also go through our fantasy golf. So, the first round of our fantasy golf happened last week. And before we go on to the everyone else, um, I’d just like to point out that I won our little match. I finished 20th. Uh, that was decent. I think Rory let a lot of us down. Rory was a bad You’re right. All you had to do was pick Brooks cuz he got you to the 100 points straight off the bat. And then just go with your favorite. Well, I think there was a few picked the top three and Brooks. Yeah. One, two, three in the world and Brooks cuz that took you and that’s because of the the live split that these live guys I just thought that was easy. I mean, I wanted to do something a we bit outside the box. That’s just easy, isn’t it? I mean, that is boring. Surprised. Yeah. I didn’t even get a prize for that. I chose a completely live team and they all made the cut and that’s why I was so much better than all you guys. I chose Jason Day and he shot 80 in the last round. Yeah. What happened? I had as well. He would I thought actually midway started round four. I thought Jason D could be one of these guys that might sneak up there. Yeah. Shot. He had four doubles or something. Yeah. Yeah. Well, that’s better than Maroy costing you plus 19 or something over the weekend. That wasn’t great. You know, you get these annoying headlines on social media that, you know, I saw one of Jason D suffers horrendous or horrific crash in the last round and it makes you want to click on it and I like, what happened to him? What happened? He just had some double bogeies. That was it. I was I get so annoyed at these things. You thought it was a car crash. I just wasted another five minutes of my life reading this crap. Um, yes. On to the winner. The winner uh was Tony Stafford with a team of Scotty Sheffller, Jordan Spith, Patrick Weeden, Bruce Kepka. Um so Tony Stafford finished 26 under one thing. So So Tony, well done, Tony. And you will receive your I’ve looked up where you live. Uh Tony’s not far away. He’s not too far. Yeah, I’m hoping he might. I sent him a message on Did you Facebook? Yeah. Did you tell him to come here to collect his bag? I did. I said it’s waiting for you here. Well done, Donald. just saved Stuart a good bit of money. These massive bags are going to cost us a fortune to send. Uh but yes, he was 26. Neil Ballingo was second. The famous the famous green keeper was for a while for most of it. Yeah. Ryan O’Donnell, Hamish Gorn, and Chris Leeurn. Oh, anyway, that’s that that was the the leaderboard. But yes, one thing you need to focus on people is you cannot have any players missing the cup because then you’re out. You know, once one of your best out, you kind of win the tournament. No, you’re struggling to win it. Yeah. Well, there’s there’s no way you could win it if you’re playing. Okay. But it’s not it’s not a mathematical impossibility. How do they work out how do they work out what score you get for missing the cup? Cuz you get the worst score of the guys that have made the cut. So Jason, you’re going to get Jason Day’s score on Sunday. Ah, okay. So it’s not good. Okay. No, you don’t want to do that. But you could in theory have guys that have missed the cut by a shot and then at the weekend everybody shoots like a decent number so it’s not killing you. Okay. Okay. But really you want to make the cut. Anyway, the next event will be the PJ Championship which is on the 18th of May. And yeah, I’ve done the leaderboard. So, uh, the our own leaderboard, it’s on our website. So, if you go to talkcolotland.co.uk, you’ll see the full leaderboard where you finished and the points you got for where you you finished. Yeah. And then that is that. So, we’ll start talking about that in a couple weeks again. Um, Brooks did all right. Oh, Brooks the rule the rule thing. Right. So Brooks hit a shot into 15 and his Caddy signaled five to Gary Woodland’s caddy and so did Brooks uh also signal five. Do we know that they were signaling five to the Caddy or were they signifying that to the TV producer or whoever was there? I think it was very obvious they were looking straight at the Caddy. Um do you think What’s your thoughts? Yeah. What’s your thoughts on it? I I wish I wasn’t speaking first, but um I I I’m pretty sure Well, first of all, if you’re doing it to TV, that’s what the TV wants. So, it’s not illegal. Um cuz the TV want to know what club you’re hitting. So, they have their little fingers telling to be fair, they would have done that before he’d hit. Yeah. Fine. Um I believe speaking to Charles Dy in the podcast here 3 months ago when he was in, that’s not illegal. I think unless you’re about to tell me 100% is illegal. It is not illegal. That’s not giving advice on what shot you should be playing or an external, you know, it’s a bit when you I’m sure Charles used the phrase something like if you if as long as you don’t say like um you know, I think it’s a good five to get there or for you it’s you know, take a bit off it. That’s cheating. That is just that’s that’s knowledge. That’s not advice. I think I’m not sure. I think. Why didn’t you look Why Why do you say these things and not look up the rule before you say it? Cuz I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what Charles said. Pretty sure. Pretty definitely sure. I I can’t remember. I don’t think I was on that. He He He did. He did. He said that. Off offering club advice is advice. It’s not. It’s exact. It’s exact. We had this exact conversation in the podcast. said, “If I’m sitting here playing with you and I said, “What club you hit there before I hit?” You’re allowed to tell me. That’s not giving me advice. Charles was sat a foot away from me saying, “Yes, that’s true.” That that’s the way it was always described to me that you don’t do it. Absolutely. You’ve always been told as a kid, don’t do it. But I don’t You can look on somebody’s bag and see that they’ve hit five or see what club they exactly. So therefore, it’s not advice. Yeah. But you can’t touch their bag, though. Well, you’re not allowed to rattle. Well, you’re not You’re not move their clubs to see what club. Yeah. move the towel off it and that you can keep things secret obviously, but I don’t that’s not against the rules. And I’m I’m 93% sure I’m right. I’ve been wrong a couple of times in my life. Don’t get me wrong. I read I read that they did get questioned on it when they came in. Yeah. And and all that were involved in it all said that was not what was said. So then the you know the rules officials like well there’s nothing we can do cuz we can’t prove it. It was clearly what was said. It was Yeah. Yeah. Um I I think I think it is breaking the rules. I think there’s too I I thought it was as well. Yeah. And Yeah. Um it seemingly goes on all the time. I think we all know that anyway, you know, but uh yeah, it seemed to be quite obvious. Obvious. Yes. Yes. It was basically I’m I’m glad he wasn’t penalized. I think it’s it would have been very harsh, but uh I would never play with you, Donald, and go tell you what club I’m hitting. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Right. So if you’re saying Brooks should have been um if Brooks should have been penalized, which I don’t think you can get an out, what about the players that are taking advice? You they get penalized for looking back and basically asking. You can’t. No, they never asked. They never Well, staring at how many fingers. Well, if somebody’s offering you like telling giving you advice, you’re not going to not listen. Oh, I’m not saying close my eyes. You do have children, don’t you? Is that what they do to you? Lookers do that. Again, I’m I’m up to 98% sure it’s not it’s not illegal. But again, I mean, you you could go, you know, you could hit your shot and go, I knew I should have hit six, you know, and that’s obviously telling them the same club that you, you know, you’ve hit five, if if your if your if your balls come going flying through the green, come up short and you should have hit, you know, you’re not allowed to say there’s a bit more wind up there or um even Char said you’re allowed to say where the wind is, but you’re just not allowed to say I think it’s a bit more club because of that wind. That’s basically the conversation when it turns into it’s like you two went in the room. Where were you two when Charles was speaking? I know Stuart doesn’t listen to anyone getting interviewed, but Donald, you were here. That was a while ago. That was more than a week ago. I kind of remember. I find it really strange that players I mean apparently this happens all the time. And I understand that people don’t keep things secret, you know. Uh you know, you don’t you don’t hide what club you’re hitting ever. But like I find it really strange that you would want to offer a a a a playing opposition, which is what Woodland is, advice of any sort. You’re clubbing or Listen, when we play golf, you do it all the time, don’t you? What’d you hit there? In a bounce game. I don’t think I would in a in a tournament. No, no, not at all. But but but you do it all the time in bounce games. B Masters, is it? Oh, is that with the Masters, right? So I don’t understand that that what you just said. I don’t understand why that’s relevant. I wouldn’t I wouldn’t do it, but I don’t think it’s illegal. Right. Okay. Is all I’ve got to say about it. It’s hard for us though, isn’t it? Cuz when we play in a four, we’ve got to ask you what club you hit and then like try and work out, well, that’s five clubs less than what’s The really annoying thing is we’re going to get people on this on our little comments box telling us that we should look up the rules better because we should have come in here prepared. Yeah. Rather than going I think Dar said it like in the last Right. We’ll phone charge straight after this pod and I’ll post it on this podcast what they act if it was ille whatever what we’re talking about. It’s clear it wasn’t illegal cuz you’re being disqualified. If you said it the way that you messaged it, I would have been really confident in what you said. But now you don’t sound confident in I’m 90. If it’s not if it’s not illegal, why did they question him about it after the game? Don’t know. And why did they say oh no I never when obviously you did. Why would they hide the fact? They must have been scared of something. if they would have a nightmare. Small five. If he said took a bit off a five, I’d say that’s getting closer to illegal. You didn’t say small fat. That’s why we could question. They could have said anything though, couldn’t they? Let’s Let’s move on. Uh I’m bored now. Yeah, let’s move on. Get slagged to death for it. Yeah, that’s fine. Yeah. Okay. I don’t read social media anyway. Who Who else do you want to speak about? I mean, Brooks in general. Brooks’s golf was fine. Oh, going back to Sorry, just before you carry on. So Sam Bennett, for example, obviously played with Sheffller first two days, which is phenomenal for um the amateur. Um it and he’s world number one, but he’s not as in as intimidating a creature as when he was thrown into the lion’s den with Ram and to me that is a completely different. Those two are your steely. They’re I’m sure they’re they’re awesome guys, but they’ll be a lot more steely. I can see Sheffller chatting away to you and giving you a bit of a great shot plus a swing and all that and Brooks. They’re quite quite hostile guys. Although you say that they’re not. They’re nice. You say that and I I agree with you 100%. But Brooks and Ram were chatting in the third round. Yeah, but I Yes. Not in the last round so much, but in the third round they were they were a bit more chatty. I’m just saying is from a player 100%. I agree with you completely. intimidation factor of Sheffller, even though he’s world number one, is not the same intimidating factor, especially Ram who just it’s the way he sort of stares at his golf ball. You better go to the holes, you little. And I’m just like, I get it. They weren’t going to be doing interviews walking down the hall, were they? They definitely weren’t going to be doing that. Ram would throw that earpiece as far as he could into the forest. I thought the coverage on the last day of for Bennett the amateur was shocking. I I think I saw him play two shots maybe and when I saw the league England. But but well I I thought that cuz when I looked I thought I’ve not seen him play a shot for a long time here and I looked and he was five under at that point and they still hadn’t seen him hit a shot. I thought it was a we bit poor but yeah I don’t know. Um it’s who the public want to watch though, isn’t it? Do you want to watch Bennett or do you want to watch Mickelson come through the I was quite a we bit intrigued to see Bennett but I was Hland had a shitty Sunday at the major again. You know right up there 74 again. Yeah. Not not great. Um but let’s just talk about Ram right. Well, just again, sorry, last time I’m going to interrupt you. Back to the amateur again. No, this time it’s Brooks still, right? So, I know we’re all saying Brooks is the major man, but the last major who’s in contention when Mickelson won, Brooks had a horrible last day. And this major is in contention to win. Horrible last day. He’s done it three or four times now. And I’m just saying for the guy we call the major man, the finisher, the the the whatever you want to call him because that’s what he is in majors and the stats will show that it’s starting to there’s a start we sub story that might start subplot even fell into the last one he won at Beth Page Black. It kind of fell into that. Yeah. And I was leading but I’m a massive Brooks fan and I’d never want that to be true but I’m just saying I could start thinking that. Do you get annoyed? I get annoyed when I hear people at home going on about the 54 holes they’ll be t It’s pathetic. Makes no difference at all, does it? Mson did well in the fourth round. Well, exactly. But the 54, remember there used to be 108. Is that right? There was a five round tournament somewhere in uh Disneyland, I think it was. Yeah, that’s right. You’re right. Uh but the players didn’t all collapse after four rounds. They actually continued to play quite good golf. You know, it makes no difference. They’re fit as a fiddle, these boys. Ram Ram won it. I don’t know. You might have noticed it. He four wins on the PGA Tour this year, which is something they kept talking about, but he’s actually had six wins in his last 13 starts as a professional golfer. Uh in in that time, Sheffller’s won twice. Rory’s won three times. So, six wins in 13. I mean, that’s that’s Tiger Run. That’s awesome. Yep. Ridiculous. Um and he’s now he’s now off of the just the one major. Yeah, he’s now Yeah. two majors. Blood Gates. Yeah, maybe. Yeah. Look, he drove the ball unbelievably well, didn’t he? I mean, it was You’ve got a cheeky smile on your face there, Stuart. You’re waiting to say something. No, no, I’m not. I I thought he looked I text the guys, you guys um halfway through the last round, just looked bullyish. You had that kind of steely look about him. I just thought Brooks isn’t playing that well, hitting the left off the tea, which is not great for him, but I just I didn’t see anyone else winning it. He just looked like he was going to bully him when they did. But once you caught him, that was it. Yeah, but you’re still trying to hit it close. Even coming down the stretch, he was still trying to, you know, he wasn’t he was just it was he was class class out. Faldo said something about you’ve got a guy there that’s shown good form for a couple of weeks against a guy that shown good form for a couple of years. And I thought that was actually quite a a true thing. Someone said to me, who who’ you see winning this? And I just thought Ram. It’s so easy to say that after, but he’s played he’s been so good for so long now. And and Brooks, I don’t know where Brooks stands even mentally. And that that whole Netflix thing changed the view on my on the the mental side of what how I saw Brooks. Yeah. But um yeah, that Netflix thing hasn’t done Brooks any favors, that’s for sure. But um you hopefully get over all that. But I think I like him more because of Netflix because he showed a bit of vulnerability. Yeah, but you want to keep up this this Yeah. Whatever Tiger had, you know, Tiger had that kind of don’t really know what’s going on in his world. He’s just this phenomenon. and Brooks had a little bit that in majors like how does he just keep producing in majors and then you see him you know that’s why I didn’t put him in my fantasy league team I thought he’s too mentally vulnerable but no going back to Ram Ram was you say he he kind of bullies the field doesn’t he really he really really does but we keep saying there’s he’s not even driving it as good as he as he did I mean he drove it good this week but but he’s not you know strokes gained wise he’s not building them as much mean he’s 15 yards longer than average in the field but every other part of his game he’s gained half a shot and where he was so he’s just he’s all of it but you know you say he didn’t drive it he obviously drove well on Sunday but like um it’s when he’s got that knuckle ball fade I mean you and when you’ve got the honor you know when like Brooks is there and he’s and when Ram’s got the honor and consistently that knuckle ball fade right down the middle 300 odd it’s in that’s tough isn’t it to deal with I mean how how am I going catch this guy up just that that with that drive. I mean the sec second hole Brooks nailed off T311 and Ram had it 30 passes. It was a three-wood though for Brooks. It was a three-wood, was it? I didn’t I missed that. But but and like I said, Ram did work on hitting and he could always turn it either way anyway, but it looked like he turned a few more deliberately on two or three holes. Quite quite decent draws like that gain a hell of a distance, but he’s so good. He drove the ball phenomenal apart from the 72nd hole which was a bit funny but he’s the first person ever to a provisional in Augusta when you’re leading the you’re leading the masters and he’s ball in the middle of the fairy billion people it’s in the middle of the fairy I’ll have a we practice shot here signal to it’s almost a comedy show is it um yeah still makes four a professional and still makes part yeah and I actually like the way that you know that that again that was class to me the fact that he could have played the old Sandy L up the slope and run it back down to the easy shot. Run it back down to 10 ft behind the flag. Bounced it front flinging up to his heart might have been his mouth bit when it was in the air. I I I don’t think so. I just think he was Have I dubbed this into the bunker? He was in his own I mean I think the commentator said he just looked like he was in his own world and and just him and his caddy and nobody else was around and he just he was just he was in that he was in that zone. Remember I said I think he could win 10 times this year and then two weeks later I’m going nobody’s ever going to win 10 I think win 10 times this year. Can he win the grand slam? Well, no. Well, I did say that Europeans would win every major this year. That was my one thing we did in the first of January. We’re really good at this so far. So far I’m I’m coming coming good. Yeah. Holland’s going to win one. Maroy is going to maybe win one. Holland’s going to win one. Do you think? Why do you think Holland? Just cuz I think he’s going to win a major. Don’t know which one. Probably the US Open. I think he needs to join the live tour. He’s good for 54 holes and that’s it. Yeah, but no. Yeah, Rams Rams Ram’s number one. I think the top three might have a good chance of getting all majors between them. And that’s going to do you think Rody’s going to win one? I I I just think six weeks ago I would have said yes and then two weeks ago or the week ago I’m like I don’t know. But I think he’ll definitely come again. But so difficult to discount the most talented guy in the game. But I want to, but I don’t want to eat my words because I feel I might because he could win any week. But yeah, I feel like he’s not going to win another major. Definitely content. I think he is the most talented or probably one Yeah, probably the most talented man in the game. But as we sort of said at the start of the game, I don’t think he’s as as ruthless or we’ll call it mentally strong as a mentally ruthless as as a ram or a keker or a tiger, you know, because of the way he swings that we see. He’s the most talented man in the game. Mhm. Most elegant and things like that. Yeah, it’s lovely. Ram’s pretty talented. Unbelievably talented. Right. It’s more agricultural, but pretty talented. That’s right. Just because of the way he moves the club around his body makes him look less talented. Why? Why is that? He’s got he’s hugely talented, obviously. See, and a lot less can go wrong. Yeah. But we always say if they all had their agame, we think Rory’s the best. Now Sandy would won and I’ve heard that I’ve heard that from somebody else. Sebie would be second. That’s what we always say though if they all had a game. But what I’m saying is between the lugs he’s not I think from TT but that is a huge you know between the legs is is a massive massive part of the game. Absolutely. So you’ve just said then he’s not the most talented. Yeah. But when I was watching quite a bit of the golf and there was a few times where Ram had maybe got into a little bit of baller and he had sort of like say a 20ft putt or 15t par for example the amount of times he hold them I can never see Maroy doing that for long enough that’s where I think he just you know and I know it wasn’t his plan that let him down this week but he never fills me with as much confidence with a putter in his hand as as he would you know like a John Ram would when he’s playing well or or a Sheffller Rory just doesn’t fill me with that much confidence. Yeah, we’re we’re going to have to move on because we’re running out of time here. Um, finishing on Rory. Well, this week’s tournament is the RBC Heritage at Helton Head, which is an elev elevated event, which does seem it feels like a strange elevated event the week after the Masters cuz we’re all just want to we’re all just want a rest. I mean, us as spectators want I can’t imagine any players being all that excited about going, but they have to go. But Rory’s just pulled out. So, that’s strange, isn’t it? the guy who’s been behind the whole thing didn’t play the they’ve got to play every event apart from one in order to be eligible for the pip and I don’t know about injury how that works out but I don’t think he’s injured he’s just pulled out with no reason but so he’s pulled out but it is just for eligibility for pip yes so he’s sacrificing his pip money he’s not he’s not he’s not taking himself off the order list or anything like that it’s just pip money I’m not so much thinking I caring about that But that Yeah, that’s right. But just the fact he’s been behind the whole thing trying to get all the best players in the world together more often and the I just thought there was one guy that’s going to turn up at every event, especially after you missed the first one, is is Rory because he’s been the leader and now he’s the guy that’s pulled out. I just find it strange. Well, maybe he’s taking my advice from the start of the podcast, just being a bit more selfish and saying, “Look, bucket, I don’t have no interest in this anymore. I’m going to make Rory Maroy a better golfer. I’m not interested in making the tour a stronger place. If I play good golf, it’ll be stronger. That’s what I think he should do anyway. But anyway, I don’t know. Yes, he’s he loses out. But who cares? Yep. Agree. Just because I need to try and mind it up cuz I’m teaching at half past. Okay. But when just one last few mentioned Sandy L there, we should mention Sandy Le Scottish podcast obviously retired this week. Uh is he the best Scottish golfer of all time? I think they all say um ball striking and all the rest. Sandy had a lot, didn’t he? Sevy always said it. He was the best. If plays well, Sandy wins. Um who’s it between? It’s only between him and him and Monte really, isn’t it? And Monte has to get the majors. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Look, Sandy, I think. Yeah. I How many majors did I win? Two. Two won the Masters in this British. Everybody will always say Sandy, I suppose. I kind of feel could be money. Eight eight odd merits when the odd merit met meant something and a longevity of a career that Sandy didn’t have as much. He was so consistent. Oh, I don’t know. But as well s done it there. I mean won two majors and won the players and he was part of the big five that really got European tier golf going. Yeah. Sandy wins. Yeah. Yeah, I think so. I think so. Okay. Well, that’s decided then. Top Golf Scot. Top Golf Scot decide that. Okay. Well, thanks very much everyone and we will see you all next week. Cheers. Bye-bye. Cheers. Bye-bye. [Music] Heat.
