Match play isn’t stroke play. Every hole is a fight. And strategy often beats ball striking more than you think. In this video, I’ll show you the secrets to winning in match play. How to pressure your opponent, control the momentum, and pick the right spots to attack. Let’s hop into it. All right. Hey guys, welcome to the channel. We got something a little bit different today. Still some onc course instruction, but it’s going to be wrapped around strategy and match play. This is my good friend Craig Toutel. We play in a lot of matchplay, twoman tournaments, team matches. key matches this year and we’ve done pretty well. So now it’s brother against brother, house divided. We’re going to play and as we’re playing you’ll hear our inner thoughts of strategy and what we’re trying to do to see if we win today. Good luck, bud. Good luck, man. Have fun. [Music] Craig came to play today. Nice ball. That’s one. Got a little wind in our face. I’m going to hit a driver. Usual aim at the bridge and cut it back a little bit. Oh no. Stay right there. Woo. That’s good. Got away with one Jen. Game on. Negative. Yeah, door’s open. See if he can uh take advantage. All right, I got 85 yards. I’m going to hit a little of a 3/4 54 degree. Might actually jump, but I’m going to aim way right of the flag just to kind of open it up a little bit down. All right, good ball. Smart play. That’s pretty good advantage me. I’m on the green at two. He’s in the bunker. He’s a good player, though, so he can get up and down. You could even jar it. Is there a place where it could have plugged maybe? Oh, wait, Craig. What? There it is. There you go. I told you. Is it plugged or not plugged? It’s plugged. So, pro shot came up just a little bit short up into the face of the grass above the bunker here. I got a nice opportunity to still hit a relatively good chip and make Ken have to think about whether he’s going to be aggressive with his birdie putt or not. Little bit of an awkward stance. So, [Music] still give myself a chance for par. So, as always, this is more of a just a two putt putt. So, we’re going to try and make sure we get it close enough that it’s a gimme. And make Craig make his toying. [Music] Oh, they’re not that fast. That was an epic fail. Kenny, I believe you’re still away. Yeah, if you want to go, you can go or I’ll go. Whatever you want me to do. I’ll go ahead and go. I mean, uh, you can go ahead and go. Well, we didn’t play that correctly, but let’s see if we can put a dagger. [Music] Nice putt. Thank you. Oh, nice putt. I was going to say that was strategy. Leave it shorter than you, then bury it, and then make it even worse for you than if I just lag. I was going to see if there might be a point in the video where uh you know, the typical rule is first in wins. Yeah, first in wins. So, I But normally it’s a little bit from a slightly further distance away. Yeah. Yeah. [Music] Looking pretty nice. See, judge Craig. You’re supposed to do that when we’re playing against people. Yeah, it’s a good shot. All right, so Craig hit one in there tight. I’m not going to overreact. I just need to make sure I get it on the green. Hopefully close. [Music] Oo, whoa, it’s not hooking as much. I thought I’d keep coming. Sling. Good ball. Yeah, I’ll take that. Now, this would be the first thin winds, maybe. Yeah, it could be. Yeah, although yours might be Well, if mine is 3 ft, then maybe not. But if mine is like 8 9 ft, then absolutely. I’m hoping I maybe found something on the range. What you got here? Deep seven iron. All right, got my work cut out here, but I’m just going to try and cozy it up better than I did on the first one. And be a stress-free par after this lag putt. [Music] Not high enough. That’s good. Okay. Thank you. I gave that because a lot of times I just want to sit here and stay locked in mindsetwise knowing that I’ve got 3 ft. I’d never expect anybody to give me a 3ft putt for birdie. I’d rather just go into this knowing that you know what, I need to see this ball go in the hole. If we were playing on the weekend and not on public TV so so to speak, I would give him this one usually. But he’s done this in some of our matches. It usually locks him in to make it. And I miss. Well, that’s good. Don’t Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. That’s okay, though. You saw two things, right? Like I just played it safe and I guess I probably should have given it to him, but since we’re playing a match, it was on the channel. I thought he might want to putt that one out. But you just never know if you’re in or out of the hole, I guess, in match play, right? That’s just it. Keep on gritting it out. Exactly. Just go into everything always thinking, you know what, you need to make it. And I didn’t hit a bad putt there. Maybe a little bit too hard. That hole’s over. You go to the next one. I don’t change anything on this hole just because I missed a short putt on the last one. [Music] Fine. So, normally I might do something like Craig and hit like a three hybrid or something, but the TE’s are up and sitting us really good on the range. So, I’m going to take a little bit of a risk and see if I can’t get it to the edge of the fairway and get on it, too. We’re going to hit the bomb. Jen High T. Oh, no. [Music] Not sure where that is, but it’s I heard heard a couple rattles lateral up there anyway. Right. So, exactly. Worst case, it’s a drop and you can still grind a par. It’s the first one that didn’t draw. I hit like 10 of these on the driver range. They all went all right. Didn’t hit that one quite as far as I might have hoped to off the tea, but still going to stay with my iron iron strategy and try to hit two good ones and then have a layup shot. [Music] That’s right. All right. So, my calculated wrist didn’t cost me anything. So, I’m just going to hit my little punchy layup shot. Tommy Fleetwood, the sixiron. Get myself some sort of wedge in after that. The ground should make it go a little to the right. Go with that cuz it’ll help me out. Oh, got away with it. Hey, good ball. All right, Jen, you got yourself propped up against the tree there. You know, we’re even now, but I think his layup shot might be a little further back. Might be a slight edge to the Zman. Mr. swing. Oh, Jen, I pulled it. Fly ball. Go. [Music] Yeah, I pulled that one so far off line and never had a chance. It’s fully a jar right now. It’s totally open. Got 132. It’s kind of between a pitching wedge and a gap wedge, but I’m going to go with the longer club. Just make sure I get it on. I’m going to aim at where the bridge starts and then draw back a little bit. If it goes straight, that’s fine. Just want to get somewhere on the putting surface right of the flag. [Music] Okay, Jen. So, we’re in the creek in three, dropping four, hitting five. Ken’s up there with only about 12 to 14 ft, maybe even less than that for birdie. This is either a go in the hole or we don’t really care at this point. And then we move on to the next hole. Give yourself a chance. Pull off a miracle. I pushed it. [Music] That’s okay. Gave it a good run. We move on to the next hole. He has two putts for five from a pretty short distance. If he’s playing it smart in match play, he’ll make a reasonable roll at it. But if it dies, even 5 6 in short, he wouldn’t be all that upset. We’re both even par and even in the match. Got a little right to lefter here. This is the Craig that keeps me honest on my length of the putt estimates, which have been pretty poor. Yeah, we’re gonna go about 12 nine nine to nine to 10 feet. All right. I was going to say 12. You got me scared cuz I think I underestimate usually, but I’m just trying to get this down in two. [Music] So, what do we just say, Jen? 5 6 in short of the hole there. All good. That’s good. That wasn’t even like try. Yours is good. Pick it up. All right. At least your score will look good. Yeah, he protects my handicap. Or maybe for the next or maybe hurts my handicap for the next match. Well, I should be hurting it so that when we play somebody, we have an advantage, right? Mine’s gone up a little bit. I’m up over a three again. Yeah, I’ve been playing good the last month. Just just under a five, so everybody can kind of You’re not asking for strokes, are you? No. No. I’ll play straight. Par 4 about 375, 380. Depends on where the pins are, but just going to hit a three-wood out of that oak tree with a little draw and try and keep it low. Hence the low T. Oh no. Hit it high. Oh, I missed the tree somehow. You skirted it. It’ll be in play. All right. Not too bad. It drew back a little. Not in the fairway, but I’ll have a shot at the green. So, all cool in the gang. Wow. You might have found something on the range, huh? Well, Ken’s been telling me to go a little narrower, a little feet together. Ah, well, a little easier swing. I thought the best tip was the right elbow in or on the bottom. That definitely helps, too. Do you watch the golf sidekick guy at all? Not too much. I don’t think I could run across him too much. If you ever watch him, just watch his swing. It looks very simple, but his it’s like it’s right there. His hands are not real high in the air and just does that and he like pounds the crap out of the ball. Yeah. Hit an eight iron. Going to aim a little left of the pin to avoid the bunker. That’s green side. And it should go a little left to right cuz of the lie I have. Oh, really? That’s way left. Got to hit that too good to yank it like that, Jen. Advantage, Craig. [Music] Oh, go. Okay. Not the best. Still Frag’s advantage technically slightly. We’re going to play a little ready golf here and see if we can just lag this into pretty close range. [Music] Didn’t quite play high enough. All right. So, kind of shortsided here. Not going to get too cutesy with it, though. So, I’m going to hit a higher shot, but not like a flop shot with the toe down. See if I can’t get it up there close, but got to get it on the green. And I didn’t hit it. That was dumb. I should have just knocked it on the green. He’s par putt’s not a gimme. That’s good. All right. Thank you. Just under two feet in your friendly match play should always be good. Yeah, totally agree. I didn’t play that hole the best, but at least I didn’t give it away. You haven’t given it away. I got to earn it. I shouldn’t have had five and a half ft from where I was in the fairway, but here we are. [Music] Another short miss. Good thing to practice today for this weekend. Yeah. Remember member. Have you been in the rough yet today? I was in the rough on my approach shot on three. I’ve been in it three times and the ball is like sitting up like almost on a T. All right, still one down. One down. Start out towards that right sun and draw it back. Where’s the draw? It cut, but it still should be pretty good. Yeah, good. Get good ball to the ramp. Yeah, right up on top of the ramp. Yeah, I thought that would have gone further, but we’re in the fairway. What does that mean? We are also in position. [Music] So when I Craig asked to join, I was telling we were going to do the bake off with the So it’s just the difference between the shaft and the head. He’s like, “Be careful with the thumbnail title.” Mine’s in the gutter. World’s worst rangefinder operator. Rangefinder is fine. Keep shooting until you think you get the number you should get. Oh, don’t get too far right on me. Just kick left. Oh, and it didn’t. That’s okay. Up and down for there. All right, we got like 181. I’m going to hit a little bit extra just to try and see if I can’t get it back there. I’m going to hit a five iron in the middle of the green. Low hookie ball. Go, go. That was not a good shot. A little bit of work left. Craig didn’t hit as good a chip or did he? Oh no, that’s not too bad. 30 ft deep short. He’s like 15. Got to make sure I get it over the onto the right plateau. So I’m going to hit a 50° and hit kind of a lowish runner tow down and aim a little bit left of the flag and see if I can’t chase it back to the pin. [Music] Oh, came out too soft. Thought that was going to be really good. [Music] That’s good if you want it. All righty. All right. So, I got this to win the hole, but I’m not going to go crazy. Still want to make sure I don’t make worse than bogey. Oh, go. That’s good. Talked myself out of that one. I don’t know why I thought the greens are going to be super fast when I got out here today. Not last week and the weekend before after we filmed. I chipped in three times. What? Yeah. chipped in twice in the first five holes. 126. There’s a little wind. I’m going to try and hit my version of a 3/4 pitching wedge. Oh, down. Yeah, right club. Right club. Just pulled it a little. So, I’m going to go all the way back to a little soft nine iron. [Music] Uhoh. Hit the hill and come back. Oh. Oh, just short. took a little bit too much off of it cuz I actually made good contact with it. No, it sounded good. I thought it was going to hit the hill and I thought it might roll back. That’s okay. So long as it gets over the bunkered golf club. Let’s see if we can put one in. Tasty. Almost. Nice par. Thank you. Gave it a chance. All right. See if we can get another hole on him. [Music] That’s good. All right. No blood. Could be worse. Just be ready. You never know when your opponent’s going to drop one on you. Exactly. Coming up on the seventh hole. Mindset at this point in the matches, you just go to the next hole. Yeah. I mean, and I’m not thinking like, you know, I’m comfortable with a one pole lead. I mean, Craig’s a good player, so one bad swing and we’ll be tied. And two bad swings, I’ll be one down. You pretty much can know that your opponent is going to go on what we call a little heater well every now and again and put up three holes in a row where they just go birdie birdie par or something like that and it just happens. Yeah, especially you. My heater is like one under for four holes and his is like three under for four holes. All right, par four about 370 maybe from this T- box. Just going to hit like a little cut fade. Uh try and get it down the hill. Oh, overcooked. [Music] Still be inside the cart path. Might have to punch one out. Hang on. Craig went with the strategy, but I think he’s over there with me. All right, we’re just going to try to hit a solid one. See if we can keep it low. Uhoh. Oh, I thought I was going to land further up. Work with that. All right, I’m just going to hit a little punchy gap wedge. I’m just trying to make sure I stay left of the tree. Ideally, it would come up short rather than going long, but just going to have to hit a good shot. Nice little punch down there. Oh, okay. And not what we’re trying to do at all. Got too scared. way short, but should be able to get it close enough to have a par putt of meaning. We just played through a group. We’re both in about the same position just to get out ahead of them. We’re just going to call this hole push. All right, so we got a par4 hard dog leg right. The goal is to hit it towards that fan and then come inside a little bit. But we’re on the upper TE’s from normal and I can go over that tree a little bit, but I’m still going to try and go slightly around it. And then if I push it a little, I should be able to clear over it. I’m just going to hit my fivewood. Something about 225. Oh, we hit the low stinger around it. Wish I knew how to do that every time. That worked perfect. Oh, no. All right. In the dirt. Okay. Out of position with not really a shot to the green. So, we’re just going to try to get back in a position and move on from there. [Music] Smart play. That’ll work. All right. So, I got a slight advantage here. I got 161 to the pin. And actually, by going that far through the fairway almost, I got a better angle in. So, I’m going to hit a I feel like this always plays a little longer, but I’m going to hit my eight iron. Going to aim halfway between that sign and the flag. See if we can’t hit one decently close. Get another hole up. Oh, hold the crap out of it. Why would you hit it on that line? I’m on the green, but would like to have been closer. Probably going to have a pretty long two putt. Could have used that lie on my shot to maybe straighten it out. Yeah, I got a uh Pete die special here. Yeah, we love Pete Dye. Yeah, I mean, perfect. I think the first time we played golf, I hit the longest drive I ever hit on 18 and I had a more steep downhill eye than that or bobble hook below my feet. Yeah. Well, I’m going to take one more club here and see if I can give myself a chance at a 15 to 20 footer. Oo, I like it. Keep feeling big bounce. That’s okay. Yeah, 20. I just thought it was going to kick forward and get get, you know, 10 ft or so. All right, we got a dog fight here still. If that ball carries maybe one more yard, it gets up the slope and bounces forward. All right, just off the green, we’re just going to try and lag it up there. Maybe we get lucky and it goes in a little left to right. Come on, lab. [Music] Hit it again. Just outside the friend zone there. Yeah, unfortunately I think we got to earn that one. Oh, you’re right. No, I totally agree. Want me to take it out? Yep. That was not a stressfree par. Yeah. [Music] Little aggressive myself. Yeah. Use a little trick that Craig made me become better at and put the line on the ball where I’m trying to hit it on the putt. See if it pays off. Well done. Thank you. That’s good. Thank you. I was going to give it to you anyway, but yeah, no film. I was trying to make sure I made it. Hey, the familiar sound of a ball hitting the bottom of the hole. It’s been a while. One of the nicest sounds on the planet. All right, par five. Oh, we got the wind behind us. Let’s see if we have to make a critical decision after this T-OT. Going to vomit, Jen. Oh, almost. [Music] I think we’re in the waist bunker. Yeah. Holy hang time, Batman. Yeah, I go back and forth. I do want to hit it that high, but like it feels like it’s going further that way. When it’s downwind, why not? Yeah, exactly. I hit that pretty good. It just didn’t draw. Okay, so I’m down two in our match. It’s still not time to press and do anything that I wouldn’t normally do. Just stick to your game. Get it in play. We’ll start hitting a few wedges a little bit closer. [Music] And he and him both play out of the dirt on this hole. Yeah. And that’s okay. I like the way the driver sounds today though for you. That’s great. Yeah. Hit in the middle of the face today. So very smashy. Okay. So we’re in the dirt. Little tip I sure can share with y’all is know the rules of your course in a waist bunker. We’re allowed ground club. So it’s worthwhile to take a practice swing and get the feel of it. [Music] All right. So, into the waist bunker. I’m just going to punch out with an eight iron. Try and leave myself somewhere around 100 yard. Good ball. I think that should be pretty good, right, Jen? Looks like he did. Get him. Woo. Just a couple yards. I think I thought it was going to land on the green. Yeah, just I mean I tried to control it and it’s a good shot. That was definitely a great shot. Jen, I’ve been working on a special new shot with my wedges and I think the 50° will do this 80 yards pretty good. Going to be a little bit lower. Should have a lot of spin on it. All right. 50° 80 yards. [Music] Oh no. Down. Down. Wow. Guess I should have done that with a 58. It was low though, right? It’ be interesting to see how far I took it back cuz I must have taken it back too far. So, we made this way too hard on ourselves. I’m not really sure what happened there. Probably should have played a more normal shot till I figure out how to hit that. All right. Going to be have to put the right speed on it. I’m going break a little to the right at the end. A little bit wider stance so I can hit it hard enough. [Music] Saddle. Saddle. Saddle. It’s pretty good. It’s a good putt. Change our mojo a little bit here. This way. That’s good. Friendly match. Yep. All right. So, what? Two up after nine. Yep. Two after nine. All right. I think I shot 38. What did you shoot? Like 38. 39. I think I actually was 41. Oh, 41. No doubles, just a bunch of boogeies. Gotcha. Well, I guess 41’s a little higher than what Craig would normally shoot. I usually shoot around 38, 39. Number 10. It’s like 370 or something. I think it’s going to hit a nice little 3-wood with a draw. Start it off that darkish looking tree out in the distance. [Music] Look weird, but I think it’s going to be all right. Oh yeah, that’s Yeah, position A. I just dead pulled it. I thought it was going to keep on drawing a little bit, but it stayed straight. Great ball. Little cut. Oh, you’re fine. You’re right of me. Oh, took a wicked little bounce. That was a great looking shot, though. Thanks. Not going to lie, that shot made me a little nervous. Really? only because you’re sitting there, you’re two down in match play and you’re pulling a different club off the tea for the first time all day when you’ve actually been hitting driver pretty good all day. I had a slight similar thought cuz I didn’t hit this great on three, you know, and I was like or four right off the tea. And I’m like, you know, why don’t you just hit your fivewood, man? I drive that I hit looked familiar. Oh, yeah. We like playing from that little bowl, especially when it’s alternate shot. Brings back good memories. Yes, sir. like a year and a half maybe. Yeah, a year and a half roughly. Yeah, just two likeminded guys. We both went to Georgia Tech about the same time or at the same time actually. All right, Jen, we got to start hitting the ball a little bit closer to the hole. Put some pressure on. [Music] Get up a little. It’s a little short still. Same thing all day long. Just a little bit little bit heavy with the short irons. I like to give clubs that mess up a second chance. So, we’re going to hit the 50°ree 3/4 this time from 109. See if we can’t get it tight. Oh, what do we do? Kick. Whoa. He’s going for He’s going for the member bounce. Here it comes. Hard off the hill. It didn’t get back. That was a really bad swing, J. I think I’m fine, though. I’m just off the green. Okay, Jen. There’s a long one here, so we’re not being kind of crazy thinking that we’re going to make it in any stretch. We just want an easy stressfree par. And you know what? Sometimes when you’re playing match play, you need a break. So Ken doesn’t have a hard up and down, but maybe he makes a mistake and opens the door for us. Oo. All right, pick it up. That’s good. See, Jen, this is the eb and flow of it, right? Like he’s in with par. And now made my chip just a little bit harder, but feel pretty comfortable on this one. Hit it. Oh. Oh god. Scared might jump out of there. Hey Jen, I was almost three down. Well, I don’t know. I would had to hit the pin in a very special spot. Yeah, right there. Right in the middle of it. Yeah, we do need a chip in on the channel, but I’ll take a long par putt here to save a hole. [Music] Thought I made it. All right, here it comes. Jen, I got to like Jen got to buckle down cuz Mo just switched a little bit. Okay, [Music] just made this hole really hard. All right, it’s not the longest hole. Just got a fivewood. Going to throw it out there at that tree just beyond the cart path. A little draw. Yep. Good one into the wall of wind. God, it just killed it, didn’t it? Wow. Got like 160. Anyway, we’re in the fairway. That like Craig shot didn’t go that well, John. Advantage. Good guy. So, we got a tough one here. We got almost a little over 200 yds all the way to the flag. This isn’t the easiest shot in the but this is the time that I feel like I’m going to take a little risk. Not playing at the flag. kind of playing more towards the uh stairs up there on the right. Shorten it up a little bit over the water. Fly ball. Go trace. Nice. Ken still has the advantage here, but I give myself a shot. Yeah, I was expecting maybe it could go a lot worse. So, I mean, that’s really good. Got 165. Got a seven iron. Even though it sounds counterintuitive cuz the pin’s on the right. I’m going to aim a little right. Sometimes you can hit that hill and kick it back and it’s not too bad of a short side. Really just really want to guard against going too far left of the pin. It’s more trouble there. Oh man, what happened? Okay. All right. So, you can see here this strategy of thinking I was in the cat bird seat didn’t work out and I hit a really bad iron shot. So, it’s flipped to Craig’s advantage. I think I can get this relatively close to stay in it. Getting a little 58 degree. Little high. Not some kind of crazy flop shot, but a little higher. Tow down. 58 [Music] 10. Yeah, that’s a good shot. [Music] Nice shot, Craig. when I haven’t made but one putt inside of that distance all day. I should never give that to your opponent. Yeah. Or you can go with the old Jack Nicholas strategy where he gave putts like on the front and then stopped doing it on the back. I think he was dealing in a more cutthroat situation. Yeah. We are talking more friendly match play than we are. Yeah. The thing that kills me about the Rider Cup though, these guys just all of a sudden start making putts out of them. I mean, like none of the stats you see on strokes gain make any sense when you watch the rider cut. All right, see we put the pressure on Craig. There it is. Well done. Feels like a tweet tweet, but tweet tweet. Sometimes those ignite you. They do. Really didn’t want to start off bogy bogey on this side, especially after the drive I hit on the first hole. Okay, [Music] nice putt. Thank you. No blood, no foul. All right, one up through 11. Let Jen, that feels like a win for me after my popped up T-ball. Hey Jen, it feels like a win for me after the half shanked second shot I hit. I mean, that’s kind of what we’re talking about though. The beauty of match play is you’re never out of it really. And it’s a shotby-shot thing. And you can’t say, “Hey, I’m gonna win this hole because I’m in the fairway and Craig hit a pop fly to right field or something on the T- box.” So, I think that’s something important. Just keep fighting. Never know what’s going to happen. All right, Jen. We’re going to try to maintain some momentum here. Key to match play a lot of times is take advantage of your T- box situation. If you have it, try to hit the best shot first. [Music] No. [Music] It didn’t. Okay, Kenny. There you go. Long and left, bud. Long and left. Was it dry? No. I don’t like it when it’s in the wind like this. I have 167. I had a good shot, too. It just let it leak a little bit. Had it stayed online, it would have been good. All right, so he’s in the water. Got to get it over the water. Let’s see. But I’m going to aim left. There we go. Jen, broken tea. I almost forgot the ritual. Broken tea is good luck. All right, we’re just going to hit a nice smooth sixiron into the wind. We’re going to go over to the shorter side. Oh god, Kenny, that was bad. Yeah, I don’t know what that swing was. That was like the last one and I wasn’t even thinking about it. All right, that’s a big foul on my part. I should have just made sure I got it over the water. All right, Jen. Ken gave me a break back there. So, yeah. You’re welcome. I appreciate that. [Music] Oh, no. Well, 5 ft right of that target line and it’s really good shot. Yeah. Well done. [Music] One time for the channel. Little short advantage me. I can make a meme out of that. I never knew you had one of those. I just got it. But hey, did you save it? Was it yours? Not only did I find a balls on one with a bunch of Oh, it’s yours. It is mine. Yeah, that’s the thing is you could have gone looking in there and pulled out not your ball really easily. There’s a million balls in there. Jen, we missed a good chip by about couple feet there catching the ridge. Stayed on the wrong side of it. And we’re going to do the illegal pickup of the ball. Friendly match, but it is a friendly match. So, we’re not on NBC yet. Here we go. Oh, yeah. I thought that was going to be harder because I thought, but it’s not fast enough yet. I thought it would run back to the right a little bit. Good two putt. Thank you. All right. In or out? Out, please. Okay, for the win. All right. Little left to right. Sure we give it a good roll. Oh, I pulled the cranked it. That’s good. Damn it. That wasn’t even close. Yep. Didn’t even make you sweat. Well, let’s see. A water ball and a mediocre chip and a two putt and a double bogey. But hey, it’s push. Yeah, double bogeies can be pushes sometimes. Yeah, I’d rather us uh both double a hole than somebody win with a double. I mean, lose with a double. Now, in be able to win these holes instead of get them given to you. What was that? I said in team match play, we’re happy to win with a double bogey or whatever it takes. And the my inner voice is I’ll take any win Craig gives me on this match as well. My inside voice, right? Go back to old tried and true. Shrikes on. Yeah, that kid drove right in line if you just hit it low. Screamer was taken his head off. Did you see him? Good thing. No, a good thing I didn’t. Yeah. All right. 13th hole, par five can be reached when you get to the bottom of the hill. I think the wind’s behind us a little bit. So, might have a shot here. Driver teed high. Little draw. Start just inside that tree [Music] and swipe across it. Right down the middle. It’s decent, but I don’t know if it’s down the hill, but I’ll take it. Yeah, good hit. So, I almost got to the bottom of the hill, but it stayed up top. I can still probably get there. Craig’s in the fairway about 30 yards behind me. So, I’m going to wait and see what he does and might dictate whether I go for it or not. Little strategy. If he hits a good shot, I’m probably going to go for it. But if he hits a really bad shot, then I’ll be a little bit more conservative. Oh. Oh my. This is you. Oh, scratch that sound bite, Jen. I thought that was me. So, I tell him like my strategy is going to wait to see you hit. So, my strategy was going to be kind of the same thing. Play the hole the way you normally do. Problem is, I don’t normally hit it to there. It might be just laying up. I’m going to shoot something real quick. Actually, I think I’m going to go ahead and still hit my fivewood. It won’t get there, but I like it. It’ll get past the first two bunkers on the right and shouldn’t get into the third one. No, I’m gonna I’m just going to hit my seven iron. Lay up for a wedge shot. Seven iron. Try and lay up to about 100 yards. [Music] And please tell me it’s not going to reach that second. Yeah. All right. Perfect. Got scared there for a second. I didn’t think I could get to that bunker, but looked like it was trying to get there. He’s going for it. I like it. This is a tweener. Oh, okay. Oh, see if I get a little lucky or not lucky. Settle. Settle. Maybe. Okay. Not a very good shot. That’s a tough match play decision for me. I could have done like Ken did and laid it up there to a wedge. That was a high-risisk play cuz there was not a lot of area to miss where I typically land. I think I would have done I was going to hit my fivewood if you laid up. So, we got 115. Don’t want to be long. Nice little 50° right at it. Put some pressure on Craig. Oh, give me go. That was horrible. All right, advantage crash. Kind of give me an opportunity here. Hi, Jen. What are you doing? Got a good break not to be in the sand, but got a pretty difficult stance in line. Not trying to do anything crazy with this. Just trying to make sure I make good contact. [Music] down straight. Almost the downhill lie. Kind of an awkward stance. I pulled it. I was just trying to kind of hit a line drive chip up through the middle and let it roll. Pulled it just a little bit. Didn’t miss by much though. Game of a few inches, right? Yep. This one’s for you golf sidekick. I never like the idea of hitting the bump and runs with my irons cuz feel like they’re hotter than my wedges, but I’ve been experimenting. So, I’m going to take a gap wedge and chase it back to the pin. Little toe down, little hood it. We’re going to roll it all the way back there for a tap in par. Yeah. Well done. Let’s go a little bit. Uh pulled it, but I’ll take it. I got for the second shot in a row some kind of uh You can’t get in there. Oh, it’s too close. Well, trying to figure out what’s a better way to swing at it awkwardly cuz they’re both going to be awkward. Yep. Settle. [Music] Okay. Difficult difficult shot. You go all the way down or did it stay left of the deep bunker? Oh, it’s here. Damn. I didn’t even know there was a bunker over here. Did you? I did. Now you’re Is it in the grass or in the sand again? It’s in the grass. Okay. On the flat part. Well, honestly, that could have been a lot worse. All been all goes back to the second shot there. Jen put myself in a tough position and I’ve been chasing ever since. But you’re still in the hole. Oh, one ton. Oh, almost had the first chip in on the channel. What’s that for? That’s for six. Oh, that’s for six, I think. Yeah. Three in the front trap, four back to here, five to there, and you’re sitting there laying uh four, right? Yeah. All right, let’s win this one. [Music] Going to make it in for six. Yes, sir. Okay, you can take that out. Let me let me double check again. Two short of the trap. I think you’re right. Three in that trap, four back to here. Five. I don’t know. Originally, I thought it was one off, but like when I did the math, I was like, “No, he’s right.” Yeah. Nice putt. There we go. Well, Kenny, well, that’s why you keep your head in it, right? That’s why you keep grinding away. That was a ugly bogey, but uh the hole was like a roller coaster. Like first I thought the further drive was mine so I had a decision and then I hit a good layup and then you didn’t hit a good layup and the seesaw battle. Yep. The end of the day it’s a push and we move on. Yeah. [Music] Catch the waistb like young Connor was. I don’t know. I might have caught that one might have been so far right it actually might have caught the rough instead of the dirt. But it’s in play. All right. Not as long as the par4 is from the burgundy. Going to hit a little bullet out there. Oh, no doubt. [Music] All right. I think I saw it bounce two or three times, so it’s going to be right there by the carpath. It was a little odd, but I think I’m okay. Jen, we got 147. [Music] Holy jumper. All right, so we got 185. The pin is in the way back. I’m really just trying to hit it something 10 yards short of that and let it roll back there. We’re just aiming for the middle middle of the green. Not even going to ask what happened on Craig’s shot. I think this is a point where I just need to play my own game and see if I can’t close this out. Man, these are weird shots, but that looks pretty damn good, doesn’t it? Okay, Jen. Pretty delicate little short-sided shot here. [Music] I don’t even think did it hit the green first or it hit the collar? It hit the collar. I mean, it rolled like Oh, yeah. It rolled like 70 ft. Well, that and not only that, it hit the collar, but it took enough of a right-hand turn to miss the to miss the uh going in the bunker the bunker over here. Yeah. All right, Jen. Match playwise, I’m in a pickle here. Need to drop one. [Music] That’s good. That’s good by me. Oh, mine. Yeah, you can putt it if you want to. See if I make it. But I’ve conceded it. Therefore, he wins the hole. God, good bar. Thank you. [Music] Oh, split a field goal. Probably through the dirt and looking at 200 yds in. Yep. Hopefully. Scared it might have got kind of near that left tree though. But it’s par five. I can always punch out. Still get on in rag. Yep. There it is. Finally. Yep. You played it with the cut and didn’t hit the tree. Yeah. Feed it up a little bit lower to keep it. Yeah. No, I like it. That was a nice ball. That’s a good one. [Music] Oh, mercy. [Music] You get that nice bounce off the carpath, Jen. It’s a beautiful day outside, but uh yeah, I haven’t hit the irons very well today. hit the ball better off the tea than I have in a long, long time. But today, the irons are just a little shaky and all over the place. But turned an easy hole into a difficult hole just because of a missed layup shot. I can’t. The tree’s too much in my way. I’m just trying to punch the hybrid underneath. Okay. I just didn’t know cuz you pulled the hybrid. Yeah. Thought the same thing, but I was like, if I hit the five or six, I’ve done this a few times with this, so I like it better. So, I guess you heard all that. I’m just laying up no matter what. But I think this is the better layup than the five iron cuz I wanted to get up and hit that tree. And that was not our best. Still should have a maybe like a six or seven in. If you asked me to replicate that shot, I don’t think I could hit it that dead out of there. All right. So, a little bit of a lackluster layup there, but I figured the worst case I could have done was, you know, advance at like 70 80 yards, which is what I did. Now I’ve got 179. Don’t want to be in that bunker. So, there’s not a whole lot of danger deep. I’m just going to hit my sixiron. I’m going to aim about 15 ft left of the pin. It’s just right of the pen. [Music] Uh-oh. Looks good. [Music] I don’t know if it’s too far or not, but I don’t know. I think I’m pretty happy with how I hit it. It looked good from here. It should have had some spin on it. Oh, yeah. Coming out of that hard pan. The way you hit it. All right. Uphill birdie putt. Craig’s in there. Sort of nicely tight. Less than 10 ft. Probably like eight. You can’t. First in might win. This would be a good example. [Music] Oh, I didn’t hit it. Yeah. I think it was the wrong line. Slow going up that hill. That’s good. Thanks. Knock it, Craig. All right. Oh, what do we call that here? Toodled. A toodle. I’m sorry. I thought you made it. That’s okay. Set set the line. Hit the line. Sometimes they go in. Oh, you can do it, man. Sometimes they don’t go in. See the line, hit the line. Use lab pace and you’ll make it. All right, Jen. Even though I’m uh two down with three to go and we have a somewhat drivable par4, where the pin is in the far back lefthand corner just doesn’t really set up for me. So, I’m going to still try to play a little course management and play to the right and hit a good wedge in. Oh jeez. [Music] Okay. Got away with it and it works. Nice little uh ding notification in the pocket on the back swing. Oh god. Is that what that was? I thought it was the camera. No, that was uh that was the phone talking to me. Probably should lay up, but I’m going to go ahead and go for it. I usually can hit this shot pretty good. So, just going to uh play it inside the bunker with a little draw. See if I can’t run it up there. If it stays short, even better. I can chip it on from there. [Music] Oh, it’s like a little straighty pushy. All right. I think I should be pretty good. That’s fine. He’ll be chipping from there. Yep. Might be okay there. [Music] It’s a little bit short. Give myself a chance though, Jen. That’s all you can do when you’re behind. You just got to keep giving yourself a few more rolls at it and hopefully the putter can just roll one in. It’s hard to win a match when you don’t roll in any putts. I’m believing in this golf sidekick thing. Normally I’d take like a 50°ree and try and bump it back there. I’m going to just take a nine iron, get it on the green, and it’s going to look like a putt after a few feet. You want me to chip it in, Jen? Let’s do it. [Music] Beautiful. Very well done. Oh, not bad though. I thought you might roll at it. That’s good. Nice part and very well played because you gave yourself a chance for sure. So, I don’t know if it affected Craig at all, but I purposely left my ball out like that so he see how close I was for birdie the whole time. I don’t think it had an effect, but thought it might be a little game gamesmanship. Oh. Oh, I thought it catcher. I thought it went missed right catcher. Well, Mr. Kenny, well, Mr. Craig, that was a very good match. Enjoyed it. Enjoyed it as always. Thanks for having me out here today. Thanks for watching. Comment, like, subscribe, all that good stuff. If you have any ideas on the channel for us to do, we’re down to here, down to do it. See you in the next one. [Music]

Ken, FYI:
Arnold Palmer actually talked about chipping with longer irons based on your proximity from the hole in his book Play Great Golf. Around the green ( just a few yards off), I like a 4 iron. Swing it slow like a putter and amaze your friends…. 😀
