BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Charlie Box
climbed nine positions to finish in the top 10 to help the Eastern Michigan University men’s golf team place 10th overall at the inaugural Jim DeLapa Collegiate that was played Sunday-Monday, Sept. 28-29, at Point O’ Woods Golf & Country Club in Benton Harbor, Mich. The Eagles posted one of their best scores in program history on the par-70, 7,005-yard course on the west side of the state and finished ahead of a pair of fellow Mid-American Conference foes in the process.
The Eagles finished 10th at 8-over 848 (281-287-280), placing them ahead of league goes Northern Illinois University (11th, 849) and host Central Michigan University (12th, 879), while tying for the sixth position on the program’s all-time 54-hole score chart. San Jose State University won the team crown at 15-under 825 (271-285-269) while Princeton University (274-281-275) at 10-under 830 and St. Mary’s University of California (271-285-275) at 9-under 831 rounded out the top three teams.
Box (Leicester, England/Wreake Valley Academy/Hutchinson CC) was the top finisher for the Eagles as he entered the third round in 16th before climbing nine spots to finish in a tie for seventh place at 4-under 206 (69-70-67), his lowest score in four events with the program and tied for fifth-best in EMU history. He as followed by Robby Turnbull (Auckland, New Zealand/Selwyn College), who tied for 24th at 1-over 211 (66-74-71), an 11-stroke improvement over his collegiate debut one week prior. Turnbull opened the tournament with a first-round 66, which tied for the 16th-lowest single-round score in program history.
Carlos Fernández Mortera (Gijon, Spain/Colegio La Corolla/Charleston (WV)) tied for 34th at 4-over 214 (74-70-70) while playing as an individual. His scored, a 10-stroke improvement over his 224 shots at the season-opening Whirlwind Collegiate Invitational (Sept. 8-9), was helped along by two rounds at par, marking his first tournament with the Eagles in which he has recorded multiple rounds at or below par.
Tim Chan (Hong Kong, China/Loretto School/VCU) tied for 41st at 5-over 215 (75-70-70), Joshua Hess (Schattdorf, Switzerland/Montverde Academy (Fla.)) was 8-over 218 (72-73-73) to tie for 52nd, and Rory McDonald-O’Brien (Shrewsbury, England/Shrewsbury School/USC-Aiken) tied for 61st at 14-over 224 (74-78-72) to round out the Eagles in the field.
Team Notes
» The Eagles shot 848 for the tournament to tie for the sixth-lowest 54-hole score in program history.
» The 848 strokes marked the second time this year Eastern has shot 850 or lower after opening with an 845 at the Whirlwind Collegiate Invitational (Sept. 8-9), which stands fifth on the list.
» The team’s third-round score of 280 tied for the 17th-lowest in program history and marked the 27th time ever the team has shot 280-or-lower in a tournament round.
Individual Notes
» Charlie Box finished with a score of 206, which tied for the fifth-lowest in program history while ranking as the third-lowest of his career after he shot 203 twice while playing for Hutchinson College.
» The tie for seventh place earned by Charlie Box marked his second top 10 showing with the Eagles in four events played while standing as his 19th career top-10 finish.
» Robby Turnbull, playing in only his second collegiate event, improved his collegiate-best score by 11 strokes after shooting 211 this week. His low score was helped by an opening-round 66, which tied for the 16th-lowest in program history and marked his first round of par-or-better for the Eagles.
» Carlos Fernández Mortera turned in his best score as an Eagle as his 214 strokes stood as a 10-stroke improvement from his previous best. The 214 also marked his lowest 54-hole score in a par-70 tournament, surpassing the 219 he shot at the Charleston Invitational (Sept. 11-12, 2023) while playing for the University of Charleston.

Eastern Michigan returns to action next week when the Eagles travel south to Estero, Fla., for the West Bay Collegiate Invitational that will be hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University at West Bay Country Club, Oct. 6-7. The Eagles were in the event’s field one year ago, but inclement weather washed out the event before play could begin.
