The European team couldn’t resist taking a jab at Donald Trump after their triumphant win at the Ryder Cup.
Despite Europe’s stellar performance, the tournament might be best remembered for the antagonistic crowd that tried to rattle the European players, particularly Rory McIlroy. However, after enduring days of heckling, Team Europe emerged victorious and took to social media to tease Donald Trump.
A video surfaced showing Rory McIlroy and the rest of the European team in their locker room at Bethpage, chanting: “Are you watching, are you watching Donald Trump?” The news comes as Rory McIlroy wasted no time taking action with fan but Ryder Cup at fault.
Trump, an avid golf enthusiast who made a high-profile appearance on the first day of the tournament, was indeed watching, reports the Daily Star.
He shared the video on his Truth Social account and graciously accepted defeat, responding with a succinct four-word comment: “Yes, I’m watching. Congratulations!”
Trump, known for his love of golf, was dressed to the nines as he boarded his Marine One helicopter to the Bethpage Black course in Long Island, New York.
Before heading to the helicopter with his golfer granddaughter Kai Trump, 18, Trump spoke to reporters. But it was his choice of footwear – white golf shoes paired with a tieless black suit – that left social media users scratching their heads.
One user joked: “He’s unhinged. He’s going to the Ryder cup and not playing in it. Weird.”
Another chimed in: “Trump already has his golf shoes on. He might demand to play in the afternoon.”
This marks the first time Trump has attended a professional golf event as a spectator since August 2023, when LIV Golf visited his Bedminster course in New Jersey.
The logistics surrounding President Donald Trump’s visit to watch the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black could potentially rack up the most expensive bill in the sport’s history.
Trump’s attendance at the tournament could result in costs exceeding £12million, although an official figure has not been disclosed.
However, costs from other sporting events that Trump has attended provide an indication of what American taxpayers might be expected to cover.
