[Music] Welcome to Ryder Cup Tea Time with the Smiley Show powered by T-Mobile. We are once again live from the People’s Plaza right here at Beth Page State Park. And today, Smiley, there are there are people in the People’s Plaza. We got the O check going. A lot of Olays out there. Shout out. Honestly, you know, we talk about the New York fans coming into uh this Rder Cup in the US. You know, how much support that they were going to have. But Europe traveled. They traveled well. They were wild and proud. It was one of the big surprises for me today is how much support that they had out there today. The Europe crowd does indeed travel. I don’t know if it’s just the the the airport. You can get to JFK easily. I don’t know where they’re coming from, but man, it is fun to see some atmosphere and hear some atmosphere out here. I’m Charlie Hume. He’s Smiley Kaufman. A reminder to like and subscribe, share with your friends the Ryder Cup YouTube channel. Here we are recapping all the action from day one at the RDER Cup and of course doing it again tomorrow night as we head into Sunday singles. Smiley, let’s get right to the last moment of the day, the last shot, last putt struck of the day, the 18th hole. Rory Mroy has a look and making this thing six-2. The amount of momentum that Europe would have had heading to their to their player locker room. As we look at the putt from Roy Sam Burns putted on a fairly similar line and his broke across the hole. Roy Mroy was looking for it to break. Didn’t do it. Just feels like an important half point. I I know uh it feels like an insurmountable task, but US battled back and roamed where it felt like they still had a chance in singles. reminder, they’re only three points back. I It feels like a lot, but with the home crowd and and the fact that they didn’t really have their best stuff today, it feels like it feels a little bit like a win uh for us for as bad as it could have gone. You know, Scotty Sheffer and Bryson Dambo not earning you one point. I would have said it would have been a lot worse than this. I was looking at some stats courtesy of our friends, the Alive Sports Bureau. The Europeans have won each of the last six RED cups in which they had a lead at the end of day one. The last time they did not win under that scenario was in 1999 when they led 6-2 after the first two sessions at Brookline. Uh and today just just a half point short of that score line 5 1/2 to 2 and 1/2 in the European favor. They won both sessions. They of course won the morning forome sessions 3 to one and the afternoon fourball session 2 and a half to one and a half. You mentioned it right there Smiley. In some ways, it felt like a win for the United States given how good the Europeans look. And I thought the thing that was maybe odd or different than most Rder Cups we’ve seen in the past is there was some big score lines today. We saw some five and fours, five and threes, you know, six and fives. What was the general tenor of the day in your opinion being out there on the golf course, you know, with these groups playing? I mean, I thought it was a masterclass today from Europe. the pairings from Luke Donald, the play from the Europeans, all the putts that they made, momentum was just on the side of the Europeans the entire day. And the morning was as quiet and as sad as I’ve ever seen on a golf course for a Ryder Cup. And it’s because of the play from the Europeans. They never let the Americans have a chance, it felt like, in any of the matches besides the last, which luckily got switched around for the Americans with Xander and Pat coming back and winning. But if it weren’t for that, there was a chance that we were looking at another 40 sweep to start a first session. And when they came out in the second session, all of the Americans, of course, had the momentum of the fans, you know, winning that last match in the first session. And the way they played at the beginning, it felt like it was going to be their afternoon and all of a sudden just the European ham and egg just showed up the entire time. You know, we saw so many putts made as we see here with John Rom. He’s led led the charge for this European team going out first this morning and also first this afternoon. Played with Hatton this morning and uh this afternoon with Seph Straa and Seth said it in his interview. He basically just said if it weren’t for this guy we would not be finishing on the 16th hole. I mean they have an incredibly impressive record. Those two have not lost together in Forsomes. And I think it’s I think you you said something there that I want to kind of unpack a little bit, which is it this crowd was supposed to be a huge home field advantage and still very well could be, but it just felt like there were so many putts that burned edges that miss narrowly that it just one or or a few more of those drop. You bring the crowd into it and you really start feeling that support. And it was just narrow misses for a lot of American putts where they really couldn’t get the Beth Paige crowd into it. It definitely was and I I think it had a lot to do with just the putts of course not not going. You know, there’s not a whole lot to cheer about with with tapin pars, but the I just felt like the ball striking from the Europeans was just a little bit better and the ham and egg of the pairings, you know, there was there was some Americans that played very well this afternoon, but they just weren’t quite mixed up on the right teams. you know, if they would have paired up maybe a little bit better in the afternoon, catching the right guys, playing with the right players, you know, Ben Griffin was just a little bit off. Sam Burns was just a little bit off and all of a sudden, you know, looks like you’re going to win that session and you walk away uh losing the session by just a half point. Jiren here in the comments agrees with you, SM says, “The US couldn’t have put it worse today and Europe made everything. There’s no reason to be worried. That won’t happen three days in a row.” A little sustainability comment there. I I I tend to agree with that. Uh, another comment here. Rom was unbelievable today. Play lights out. Definitely agree with that. Uh, interesting that two of the Americans best players, Scotty Sheffller and Bryson Nambo struggle. This was another really interesting stat from Elias. Uh, the last time the number one ranked player in the world lost twice on the first day of Ryder Cup, Tiger Woods 2002, and then it happened again to Tiger in 1999. I’m not suggesting Scotty Shepler is out of this RED Cup by any means. We know we’ve seen his quality and skill. Wh why do you what do you chalk that up to and just Scotty struggling to get a point on the board for the Americans when we’ve seen his quality in a stroke play format so often this entire season? Well, I could speak to the morning as I walked 18 holes with him or I should say not quite 18 holes. They made it 15 holes as Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Oberg uh first off Fitzy was unbelievable. His ball striking was was out of this world. He was at the absolute heartbeat of that European team with him and Ludvig. But I think the the big mistake in that match was Scotty Sheffer teeing off on the even holes. To me, there was a huge advantage from a distance standpoint. Russell Henley teeing off on the odds at times. There was a 30 to 40 yard advantage for the Europeans when Ludvig and Russell were hitting on these odd holes. It just always felt like the Europeans were at such a statistical advantage. Tons of long irons. The play the course played extremely long. Tons of long irons. And I’m so used to Scotty Sheffller having such a big advantage on off of the TE, but when he’s playing from Russell Henley’s ball, there was no advantage. And when Fitzy can sneak drivers past Scotty Sheffler on the even holes, it just felt like, you know, for the the ball striking was just a little bit better because they had shorter clubs into the greens. I thought right from the jump it was interesting given what we discussed right here last night talking about the characteristics of this course, the lack of rough, the softness of the greens where we saw Russell Henley missing that left rough and maybe if the rough’s a little bit thicker, it scrubs more a spin-off and you can advance the ball, you can land it. I think you even said this on the broadcast where he hits a shot out of that rough that lands probably the spot he’s looking for, but it just sticks right there and holds. Sure. and and and just I’m wondering what you thought of the way that Beth Pa played today both in the morning and then as the conditions changed as the day progressed. Well, the greens were extremely soft. The the fairways were soft. It made the golf course played very long. A lot of long irons into many of the par4s. But just to follow up on this Scotty Sheff Russell Henley pairing, I’m not suggesting that it’s a bad pairing. I think those two complement each other very well. But with the fairways being soft, the greens being soft, the rough being extremely short, it really nullifies the advantages that both of these guys have because of their accuracy that they have, how good they are with their precision, how close they hit it proximity-wise. All of these things get negated a little bit because it’s just it was just a bomb and gouge session out there today. You could hit it wherever you wanted to for the most part. And then as long as you hit it far enough and from there it just felt like the greens were holding from the fairway and the rough. We’re going to get the pairings here later in the show. We’re gonna get them live on the show. We able to react react to them as we see them. Maybe doing a little predicting here. Do you think we see Keegan switch up some of the guys we saw go out here unsuccessfully on day one? What do you have an idea of who you think you’re going to see in in that Saturday forum session? Well, Cam Young played his way obviously into forsomes tomorrow morning. That’s no doubter. That was the one big highlight from the Americans. Uh JT talked how well Cam Young played and I think we all were a little surprised to not see him go play this morning in the forsomes. Um it’ll be interesting. You know, Harris English I thought heading into this this event I thought for sure he was going to play both sessions of four balls and I was really surprised to see him go out in forums and not in the afternoon. So I I think Harris will probably be sitting tomorrow morning and then playing in the afternoon. That would be my first instinct. And then Colin Morcow is the big question mark to me. Are we going to see him tomorrow? I’m not sure because his length and just his fit for this golf course. Same with Russell Henley. It’s it’s not exactly uh what you’re looking for tomorrow. You need somebody that can hit it a little bit further. So that would be my concern about those two guys. But JT wasn’t his best this morning. Uh he was obviously a part of a winning team this afternoon. And I guess my question would be is do you throw JT back out there? Is is he one of the best eight? He he may be at this point because you didn’t really see enough maybe from Ben Griffin. Um and now if if they do have preferred wise tomorrow morning, which we talked about, that is an option if you wanted to throw Ben out there. But I I thought the ball striker wasn’t quite there for Ben. Uh I’d like to see JJ Spawn out in the morning. That would be maybe one of the eight if JT were to sit. Uh, so I would flip-flop maybe uh getting uh either Harrison Colin out, getting Cam Young in there, um, and JJ Spong. I’m I’m wondering even how much data you can extrapolate as Keegan Bradley from that session given how good the Europeans played. I talked to someone in Colmore Camp just checking in with him after that that morning session saying, “Hey, how’d you feel like it went out there?” And he said, “I mean, I hardly even putt it.” You know, I mean, we’re putting 30 feet, you know, for birdie to have holes. That’s how good the Europeans played in a lot of these things. And so I I you know, there are obvious players that struggle that need to kind of come out of the lineup, but you know, are there guys where maybe they get a second look because it was simply a matter of the Europeans playing so much better, not really even giving them chances to to to have or win a match. Well, I I think the second chances would be for your for your top end talent. I I think Scotty Sheffller if if paired, you know, if it’s Russell Henley again or if you put him with JJ Spawn or Sam Burns, Sam wasn’t necessarily great today, but I think if if you could find a partner that is playing a little bit better for Scotty or Bryson, it just felt like too often Bryson was on an island this afternoon where he was, you know, carrying it felt like the team for for it felt like almost an hour, an hour and a half in the middle of the round. Uh, meanwhile, it feels like Scotty, you know, that was shocking not seeing him make a ton of birdies this afternoon because I thought he did play well this morning. Uh, just never really had opportunities to uh to just build momentum and it kind of just sucks the life out of you when you just feel like you can’t get any and grab any momentum in the in the matches. And and we’re going to get to the to the afternoon scoreboard here uh up right in front of us now. Uh, and I really regret that we have a full screen up because I had a comment that I really needed to get to on the front end of this. Very important. Uh, some Oh, and oh, here it is. Can we talk about Charlie’s new hat? Need to hear how much he dropped in the merch tent. Shameless plug for just I mean, look at this lid. This looks like a 1994 Super Bowl hat. It says XLV. This is like a It’s amazing. I mean, look, I’m just going to go look right into my camera over here. I mean, look at this merch. It was a pretty good haul. It was a It was a very disciplined haul. Uh, but it was a haul nonetheless, you know. So, I suggest go grab the 1994 Super Bowl hat while you can uh in that merch tent. But I mean, get getting into that afternoon that that fourball session obviously a little bit brighter for the Americans. Looked like we had some opportunities. I say we as if I’m on the team. I I should remember I’m a I’m a impartial broadcaster in this sense. But I mean there were chances for Ben Griffin and Bryson Desambo. Obviously Cam Young, Justin Thomas win six and five. Comes right down to the wire for Sam Burns and Patrick Camplay. Do you like what you saw there? Or or if you’re taking some of these guys that played well in four ball and inserting them in Saturday foresomes, how does that have impact the Saturday fourball lineups? Well, from a European standpoint, they don’t have to change anything. I’m sure that they’re just going to run off basically off of their sheet that they had coming into tomorrow. So, they don’t really need to change a thing. Now, I think the vice captains for the United States team and Captain Keegan can definitely talk a lot about, hey, what did you see from this guy? Do you think this guy can go out tomorrow morning and get us a point? Who can we stick with Bryson? Who can we stick with Scotty Sheffller? Uh because you’re going to need a big day from your stars tomorrow. And Xander Schoffley, I think we’re going to we’re going to have to see Xander play both sessions tomorrow. Um him sitting this afternoon obviously was a little bit of a surprise. And if if you would have picked one guy to replace, it would have been JT, but he was a part of a six and five winning route with Cam Young. So, uh interesting to to see. You expect of course him to go out with Pat tomorrow morning. Will Pat go out with Sam Burns again or will Xander Shave have another partner uh to go out with tomorrow afternoon? But we need to see uh Xander Shaflet play both sessions tomorrow. Uh Smiley, it is time now for the T-Mobile top five. We did this yesterday with a variety of heckles. Little more straightforward today. We’re going to watch some highlights. Okay, we’re going to watch video from the top five moments of the day, but the game remains the same. Okay, we’re going to give these to you one at a time and you’re going to try to place them in a ranking. We’re going to see how you do when it comes to the end. A lot a lot of these probably I’m I’m going to be seeing for the first time. I’ve heard them in my ear. So, for me, this might be challenging. That’s right. Okay, we’re going to start right at the top. Morning Forsomes. Uh the first T 46yd par4. Bryson Shambo on the T. The thing I love about this one is this is one that you called for on our show. You said he needs to hit the first D shot for the Americans and here he was hitting it. Uh I I I man, I’ll tell you what, buddy. I was watching this. I was just thinking to myself, I love golf so much. It was an epic season. I love golf. I love this event. It was just electric. The atmosphere. I mean, look at the amount of people down there at the bottom of the hill. Just it was incredible. It It wasn’t very warm this morning for And for him to get as close as he did. I mean, just phenomenal. There was a little bit of a helping win, but not much. My guess was when I looked at the book, it was about a 340 yard carry. Just stupid stuff. And you’re you’re probably right given the lack of roll on these fairways because it was 344 total. I just love the way that’s flying through the air. It looks like a portrait. The sun’s rising, trickling through the clouds here at Beth Page State Park. I mean, it does not get any better. Well, I I think on the top five for the T-Mobile top five, this it’s going to have to be lower down the list because the day belonged to the Europeans. So, uh, as far as me looking forward to this happening, it’s definitely high up there, but it definitely wasn’t for me the top five of the day. I’m going to land right at a four. Okay, so four for Bryce’s opening drive. Uh, let’s go to the second moment of the day here, also from Morning Forsomes. Here’s the sixth hole. John Rom finds himself in the left native area. I’ve heard about this and I can’t wait to see it now. Truly absurd. I I hope I want to see how this Look at this lie. I remember Bones describing it as you need to be concerned about hurting yourself if you swung too hard. And then I’m like walking up to the green at six and next thing you know I heard that they had a putt for birdie to win the hole somehow. So I don’t understand how this is possible. But let’s let’s take a peek here. It it’s I’m still stunned the spectator stood this close. I mean I would have hos rocketed this right into someone’s mouth about 10 ft. Okay. All right. that that is uh potentially going to be up there for shot of the day for me just from what I just saw with the lie. I’m actually going to go one shot of the day. John Rom. No, no arguments from this side of the desk. I mean, a truly immense shot from him. I don’t know how he got a club on it. Well, of I I didn’t of course get to see the wifer myself, but just the shot that we just showed. I mean, that is just stupid. The strength that he had to control the club face through all that heavy fescue. I mean, that’s the day. That’s the stuff that happens when you when you’re up three in sessions. Things like that. Things when you feel like you’re in the middle of the fairway, you’re about to win the hole, and next thing you know, you see a ball shoot out of the fescue. Like, what the heck was that? Was that a bird? No, it’s a golf ball. And it’s somehow now inside of 10 ft. All right. So, you have that at number one. That is going right in at number one. John Rom’s approach at the sixth hole in morning’s foresomes. Uh so, now let’s move to our our next uh and this is a little bit of a combo uh highlight here, Smiley. We’re going to go to the afternoon fourball. We’re going to the seventh hole. Okay. And we’re going to start with a 56 ft putt. Ben Griffin. I was there for this. I was there for this. But but that that is not where we’re going to end. We’re we’re going to Let’s watch this putt. Well, this was interesting because Ben Griffin, he hit a sevenwood to this point. This hole was playing super long this afternoon. And it just felt like Ben Griffin was ready to to do something. And it just was unbelievable. That putt right in the middle. Uh the chest bomb in in real time. I don’t remember that chest bump, but if Bryson had done that to me, I probably would have fallen over. So, good on Ben. Uh that creatine’s definitely paying off for the guy. The creatine definitely helps with the chest bumps, you know. Then we go to Justin Rose. This is why it’s a double feature. 41 ft for Justin Rose. Is this not just remind you of the putt at 17 and Madina? I mean, just that’s a great call. I love me some me type of moment. Justin Rose. I mean, I I was thinking that there was a chance that Tommy Fleetwood would made his putt. I had already ruled out Justin Rose and and Justin had already hit the putt and I’m watching. I’m trying to find the hole and I was like, “Oh my god, he just made it. He just douched right in the back.” That’s number two. That’s number two. So, it’s a combo moment. Honestly, that was a 1A 1B situation. Uh if I I I have a little bit of regret uh not putting that one, but that’s going to go two for me right now. I still I still like you having Braum at one. I I do think it’s a similar type of discussion where that was Europe’s day. You know, the Americans feel like they have a little momentum going. You get the Ben Griffin Bryson chess bump and then Justin Rose drops 41. One one other caveat about that match, the hole before that, Bryson Shambo on the 405 yd par4 six. He drove it 18 yards short of the front of the green, like the longest drive I’ve ever seen in my life. And chips it up there to about 4 feet and misses the putt. And the one of the reasons why he missed it besides pushing it was at that same time he hit the putt. Cam Young or Justin Thomas made a big putt at the hole behind it hole behind at the fifth hole and it was this massive roar and one in which I thought he should have backed off because he was over the putt about to pull it and decided not to hit a poor putt and missed it. And so I the Americans were playing better on the front nine. Now, there was a little bit of ham and egg going on a little bit from the Europeans early, but they could have really built up a three up lead. Let’s say Justin Rose misses that putt. Bryson makes the putt at six. Next thing you know, the Americans have a lead in which Rose and Flewood maybe are chasing and instead they never got more than one down and then and then you get to where they ended up on the back where they lose one down. Uh, okay. So, that plugs into number two for you, the double feature just below the ROM approach. Uh, this next guy deserves some love uh in a lot of ways. We’re going to stick with the afternoon fourball. 12th hole, 202 ys to the front of the hole. Cam Young. Oh, I heard about this shot. I I mean, look at this. This This whole location was really challenging to get to. The wind was off of the right and it felt like it was impossible to get it right at that whole location. Somehow he did. But the par fours in this stretch from seven nine 10 12 you these guys were hitting driver five irons four irons sevenwoods at times and that is one incredible birdie from Cam Young. I mean just phenomenal phenomenal ball striking. I I uh before we get to your ranking I got to say I was watching that highlight. I love the JT emote package. This is one of his moves and then every time putt it’s here. It’s here. He’s he was you know when he finished his match he he looked like he wanted to go out and play some more. I I saw him out there and you know JT and I are good buddies and he barely was like he didn’t even give me a time today. He was like I am in American Rder Cup mode and good for him because it was a really really important session that they won. Um and I I I know he wants to go out and play as many matches as he possibly can to help this American team. And I have to imagine his experience helped today with Cam Young too. the amount of things that he uh can build up in Cam walking down fairways just keeping him confident and he played confidently. I I love this for Cam. I texted our our group you you and Jackson and I said I think Cam’s going to have a good session this afternoon and boy did he need to see Cam the rest of the way. Uh Cam, you need to see him the rest of the way. He’s already sit once. Uh it’ll be interesting to see uh if if multiple guys don’t even play tomorrow. So where do you you have a one, two, and four occupied. Where does Cam Young’s approach on the 12th rank on the 12th? Okay. I have one, two, and four occupied. So, three and five are your options. Three and five. Um, I’m going to put that at three. Okay. All right. So, then that leaves just one one section left. I think this is probably actually fair because this is another it’s a story of the day type moment. We’re going to go afternoon fourball, 15th hole. Another little double feature. Uh, we’re going to get started. 22 feet from the hole. Scotty Sheffller putting here. Uh this this was the Scotty John Rom back to back the the Scotty to John Rom the double feature here on 15. They got incredible video boards out on the ground. So I actually did catch this one. So you can sit in the grand stands and watch the coverage if you’re sitting in the right grand stands and I remember Scotty making this putt and I didn’t know that John Rom still had another putt to tie the hole. So, this was, you know, a a a moment in the match where it felt like, okay, Scotty’s about to birdie the last four holes and somehow have this match. And meanwhile, John Rom says, “Hold my beer. Uh, this is what I’ve been doing the entire day. His putting was just out of this world from what I understand.” Hooping. Absolutely hooping. And and it’s interesting because, you know, there was a little bit maybe shakiness. They won they won the morning match and his his Forsome’s record is impeccable. But just that first T- shot, you’re wondering what version of John Rom are we going to get today? And it’s a version that is, you know, the elite John Rom. We see it almost every every RDER Cup. And that was, you know, a moment where, to your point, Scotty, you let Scotty get hot, you let him back into it. That carries into Saturday. And instead, he slammed the door there and ended up winning that match. So that’s that’s number five for me. And I I’m happy with my list. If John Rom would have done that to win the match, that obviously would have catapulted it way up. If anything, I would have probably switched Bryson in in the John Rom situation at the four, five. Uh you could have made a case really for three, four, and five, gotten switched up in any order. You got a 1A, 1B situation, then you got a 2A, 2B, 2C, and uh all really incredible highlights from today. A great start to Friday. Uh so the top five T-Mobile moments. Uh I I look forward to the ones the rest of the week. I I I like I like your your T-Mobile top five. So, Smiley, let’s keep it rolling here a little bit. We’re talking about JT and Cam. You talked about his emotion, where he was at. I think you can refer to the comments. Let’s hear those now. Let’s hear from JT talking about the round they had together in that six and five win. Cam, you’ve just made your RDER Cup debut in your home state at a course that you know so well. Describe the experience. It’s pretty special. Um, you know, I love this place and this is a team we work really hard to make. So, um, we’re just super grateful to have the opportunity to play today, uh, alongside him, you know, in front of these these fans is pretty special. JT, you’re the veteran. I know you were disappointed with your match this morning. How did you turn it around to get the win this afternoon? Uh, I mean, I really just kind of sat back and watched the show. I mean, uh, I I tried to help when I could, but I’m uh I’m just so happy for Cam and I’m proud of him. Yeah. I I I love that for both of those guys. I mean, I think I think JT being the cheerleader that he was being for Cam and just his excitement for watching him play in his first Rder Cup at a place that means a lot to him, I I really enjoyed and I think that see I wonder if that’s the group we see going forward. I mean, do you think we see them playing Forsomes tomorrow morning? JT and Cam. Um, that’s a good question. Uh, I I don’t Bryson golf ball. Maybe that’s your kind of matchup. I don’t expect JT and Cam to play together tomorrow morning. Uh, but it’s not a bad idea. Uh, they did have an incredible six and five performance, but it’s also the other side of the coin is they went up against a one of the only rookies on the RDER Cup team for Europe. The six and five had a lot to do with maybe Raasmus’ play a little bit and Ludvig maybe running out of gas and Ludvig although he played very well, I’m not saying he was carried by any stretch of the imagination by Fitzpatrick, but undoubtedly the stats show it. Fitzy gained more than four strokes on uh TA Green the entire day yes or in the morning I should say. Uh so Fitzy was incredible. So uh maybe JT and Cam will go out tomorrow morning but I don’t expect JT to play five matches. So I would expect him to sit tomorrow morning. There’s some comments here Smiley we got to get to. This is actually a a longtime commenter on the Smiley Show YouTube. Joseph Boza. Thanks for watching Joe. Uh he asked any funny stories from today’s Smiley behind the scenes moments. Anything you got out there? any like what’s the best heckle you you heard? Surely you caught one or two good ones out there. I caught one. I heard one and this was in the break. Kurt Byron was kind of describing Rory Mackoy having a moment with a fan walking off a green. I don’t know if it made its way on social media, but let’s just say a finger was used and you could pick which finger it was and that was pointed at a fan. I don’t know what the heckling was, but it seemed like whatever was said, it probably was appropriate for that finger to be used. And it wasn’t a thumbs up. It was not a It was not a Phil Mickelson thumbs up. Uh so, we’re still waiting on these pairings, Smiley. Um I looks like we’re about 5 to seven minutes away from getting those. If you had to predict, like let’s just take a guess. Okay. Like what what are you calling for the American pairings uh Saturday morning here in Forsoms? Oh goodness. Uh it’s the European side is so strong and it feels insurmountable to try to beat Rory and Tommy. It feels, you know, going up against Ludvig and Fitzy again. Can they play that good again? I doubtful. Uh that would be shocking if they did. But Patrick and Xander, they’ve been the anchor matches. Maybe you put them out early to try to get a little bit more red on the board uh as a possibility. Scotty Sheffler has to go out tomorrow morning. Is it going to be with Russell Henley or maybe it’ll be with JJ Spawn or or Spawn? Do Do you think we do not see Scotty and Burns together this entire week? Yeah, I doubt it. I I if anything, maybe you go find Scotty Schffer with a Cam Young, a guy who played really well this morning or this afternoon. Put Cam with Scotty, a guy who’s playing really well. Give Give Scotty a little bit of momentum for somebody that’s also hitting it far to where it feels like he’s playing from where he typically would in a golf round. Um it’s the hardest thing to predict I think is you feel like Colin Morawa is built for forsomes. Henley’s built for forsomes but with the golf course being so soft. I just have my concerns on whether the those two will go out tomorrow tomorrow morning. So okay. So we’re thinking maybe Scotty and JJ. We’re thinking Pat and Xander. Yeah. And and and we’re thinking Cam. And who are you pair Cam and Bryson feel right? Yeah. Yeah. Cam, Cam, and Bryson. Let’s go there. So, that’s three of our four pairings. And who who do you like for the last one? Oh, goodness. Uh Ben Griffin, you want to try to get Ben in? I mean, because the thing is like Ben I don’t think Ben goes out tomorrow morning. I don’t because the remaining guys we have there are are we’d have we’d have JT, Ben Griffin, Sam Burns, Harris English, call Morawa, and who’s the last one I’m forgetting there? M. Gosh, I want to see Harris go out in the afternoon. I just don’t expect him to play in the morning. I expect Harris to sit. I expect potentially Morawa to sit. I expect JT to sit and Sam Burns. That’s okay. So that’s is that four? I’m not This is not a math. That’s four. That feels like four. But without the sheet in front of me, it’s really hard to put them all together, right? But that’s I think that’s the eight that end up playing tomorrow. And and on the crowd side, I mean, what needs to h I mean, it feels like they have to make some birdies early to get them into it. Oh god. You just got to see some putts drop, right? You ain’t I’m saying the obvious here. No, you’re not. It’s uh Everybody says the Europeans always putt better and and sure, yes, they they made some big putts. Justin Rose was just phenomenal today. So was John Rahm. But one of the most interesting things that I thought that Paul McInley said today on our broadcast is that the topend talent is what wins writer cups. And when you have Bryson DS Shamu and Scotty Schaefer get zero points today, it just is a reflection of of the Americans of what did not need to happen. Scotty and Bryson needed to have big Rder Cups for the Americans to win this. And we look back to Rome, three players scored 10 and a half points for the European team. Victor Havlin, John Rom, and Roy Mackoy. 10 and a half points. All you need is 14, I guess, for the Europes to retain the cup uh back in Rome or 14 and a half. 10 and a half points. That’s a lot of points. So when you get your top end talent playing really well, it makes it so much easier to pair pair things up when these guys are playing well. So it’s a such an important day for the top end guys to play well. Xander needs a big day. Patrick Camley again might have to might end up having to play five matchers. Uh Scotty and Bryson got to got to get points on the ward. We’re hearing the the chance of Olay back here and fans. We still got some guys back here in the people’s plaza. If people didn’t join in at the very beginning of this, I’m going to re reiterate it again. Europe traveled. They traveled well. They were loud. They were proud. They were supportive. They were singing songs, way more songs, and have more chance than any of the Americans. Shout out to my European fans back here. Y’all bring Look at this. We got They got the custom RDER Cup shirts. Look at Why don’t you come over here? I I want to take a look at that shirt. Come on camera. Let’s take a look at that shirt. Here we go. Let’s get the fans involved. We might need the bleep. We might need the bleep button here in a second. We just want to get a look at the shirt. Oh, look at this. Look at this. This is fantastic. Is that That’s That’s Rory. That’s a statue of Rory right there. Statue of Rory. Oh, they’re on the set. They’re crashing on the set. Hey, can All right. Can y’all can y’all sing a song for us? Give us a little song. Tommy Tommy Tommy Tommy Tommy Tommy Fleetwood Tommy Tommy Tommy Tommy Tommy Tommy Fleetwood. We need Can we sing Can we sing Molly Thomas for Justin Thomas and Little Girl? I’ll sing a song for the Americans. What is that? I don’t know if it’s going to be fit for broadcast. One point. You’ve only got one point. Thank you, man. Thank you. Hey, this is this is fantastic. This is fantastic. Congrats you boys for traveling well. We are on the camera here. This is this is the people’s plaza. Okay, we got what we got. One finale here. One flourish flourishing. Nottingham. Is that where uh Robin Hood is Fitzy from there or no? Just up the road. Sheffield. Sheffield. Sheffield. Okay. One thing I will say though is Okay. Um, Donaldson, he won he won the rider cup at Glenn Eagles. Okay. Okay. He played at my grandma’s course in M town. Julian, if you’re watching, I love you. Shout out to Julian. Shout out to Julian. Shout out to these boys here. I love the time getting up to the course. So, we’re going to be We’re up at 4 a.m. this morning. Oh, you got a little cat right over here. Just going to get a pillow and call it a night. Okay. Okay. Anyway, here what is it? Uh what is it that Jordan Belelfford said? They’re not leaving. They’re not leaving. Not leaving. Okay. All right, boys. Thanks for joining us. Uh I think we we got Thanks for Hey, well done today. Well done today, boys. Yeah. Uh All right. Let’s Let’s see here. I believe I believe the pairings are upon us here, Smiley. We We just might have the pairings at this point. This is fantastic. This I mean, there’s nothing like a little ambiance here. We really had to give you a peek inside the the people’s plaza here with the people. We’ve officially lost contain. We have lo we I I I think that was like the actual definition of like losing contain in real time. Uh that was that was great. Shout out to Jamie Tom. They were good. They were loud and proud. They brought way more energy than the United States. It was just the putts and the the crowd pops that US brought today. It wasn’t just walking up to the green. It was just kind of lack of daysical. wasn’t enough of just chaos as as groups were walking from Terra Green. Except when the US team with Bryson when they won a hole, walking to the next hole, it was very chaotic. I mean, unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Let me ask you this, Miley, because you get to choose the the format that you open with and knowing the Europeans. You got a good question. It’s the statistical advantage that they seem to have in Forsoms. And some people argue, well, it’s more location based. You know, the Americans do better for some at home, but nonetheless, we watched the Europeans trot out three to one, take the crowd out of it largely early. Would you have led with four ball if you had to do it again if you’re Keegan? That was the one thing I was surprised about when this was announced uh a month ago that the United States was going to open up in Forsomes. When you take the records from the European players that are playing this week and the United States players that are playing this week, a clear advantage for the European pairings and a very positive record. players that are still undefeated in forsomes. And so not leading off with a fourball, which is what the United States uh from a statistical standpoint and adding up their record for all the players playing this week, positive and well over positive. That was a surprise to me for them to not open up in four ball as it felt like at worst they would have been, you know, at at even or better heading into forsomes where they knew that was going to be a challenge. But still, it’s it’s a tough one to overcome when you don’t have built-in automatic pairings. We’ve been talking about it uh all year. Really? Yeah. Well, Smiley, if you want to get up early as an American or European, you want to stay the night over here with boys just sleeping bag. Uh the best way to start is pulling up your phone, you can start your RDER Cup mornings in a whole new way with T-Mobile Breakfast at Beth Page. Keep going. Just release. Release. Oh, he wanted He wanted more. He wanted more on that. There just wanted more. It feels like you got to get a birdie here. It feels like a let down a little bit after that just towering T- shot. Well, you start your day once again with Colin Jo. I think I might do the same. I I’m I’m a little something to watch in the shuttle bus ride over. Little solid 60 to 90 minute show. That’s right. You You want to come back with us? Trying to take my job, man. You need to stick to SNL. You’re too good at calling golf. Smiley, let’s do this. Actually, let’s zag a little bit because we don’t have we don’t have these pairings uh out yet. Still waiting on those. But we do need to award America’s best pairing powered by T-Mobile. We were initially planning to do that for for you know what the pairs we were going to see for tomorrow. But I feel like I feel like you should award this for Friday’s matches. America’s best pairing powered by T-Mobile. And I think I know who you’re going to choose here. Who’ you Who’d you like best today on the American side? I mean, Cam Young had the best day. Cam Young had the best day. So, it’s going to be Cam Young and JT. I mean, six and five. Every every other match that was even close for the Americans had to go all the way to the 18th hole. Those guys didn’t even make it to the fun part of the golf course, the 15th 15th hole. But, uh, Cam Young, he he was the MVP. Patrick Hamway was a close second. Um, and also just Beth Paige in general. It was so cool when you walk down the 14th hole, that par three, and walk to that shootute of 15 through 18. And you have these two fire trucks that have a massive American flag overhanging as all the players and all of the the gallery walk underneath this massive American flag. Just I I what you expect, right, when you walk to that section of the golf course of this is where we’re going to win the RDER Cup. And today, the European players, they might as well, they just would have smacked it down because they ran right through it. It was incredible what they were able to do today. Played with so much passion and just the amount of putts they made and uh the pairings from Luke Donald, God, it was just it was just a master class. Uh they didn’t make any mistakes. I I feel like I was walking around with Jackson saying this to him is that this place is like good for the golfing soul. I just I love the design. uh you know, the way it kind of rolls among a state park. It’s it it’s so well designed, but it’s not overly manicured. It just really feels like a great place for so many different reasons. And to your point, a great place to win a Ryder Cup, whether whether the Americans can come back. I mean, can you imagine if we get an American comeback the way we started and and the places going to hold in Ryder Cup history if they can get it done? They’re not out of it. They’re not out of it. But history says Europe is uh in a great spot to win this Ryder Cup. But when I think about the pairings in Rome in the pairings in currently at Beth Page, what we saw today and how Luke Donald used a little bit of a different chess match when it came to pairing his top guys with different players. I think we were expecting to see similar lineups that we saw in Rome, but Luke Donald was quick to look at the golf course, look at the conditions, and players that were on this roster of maybe guys that were playing better leading in, guys that were in form and mixing it up a little bit. Kind of caught me off guard and I questioned it a little bit, but he pulled all the right strings today. That that is what I feel like is the hallmark of this European team is that anybody can pair with anybody. And I think that says a lot about the way that well if you look at the data from just this afternoon. Let me just walk you through it real quick. The in the in the four fourball this afternoon when you look at who all played well at the very top Cam Young and JT Tommy and Rory Kent Lane Sheffller Rahm Dambo and JJ there were more Americans that I just named than a Europeans from a data golf standpoint of of who had better days this afternoon. So that just goes to show how well the pairings were of just the right mix. And of course there there’s a little luck involved in that. Of course there is. Um and and maybe that won’t hold up over the rest of the time and that eventually this will end up a little bit back towards the median when it comes to just the overall who’s playing better in this Rder Cup. But today it just felt like nothing could go wrong based off of uh the pairings and and how the guys were able to respond. All right, we’re coming down to the finish line here. Smiley. And here’s what I want to kind of dig into is give me some predictions once again. Where are we going to stand? How are these sessions going to break out tomorrow? And where do you think we’re going to stand scorinewise going into Sunday singles? Well, I I it’s hard to really uh it’s hard to really know until these pairings come out. You know, like until I see these pairings tomorrow morning that it just gives you a sense of of an initial feel of what you think. Um, so, uh, preferred wise is another thing that we talk have talked briefly about, uh, this morning that I I feel like somewhat made an impact. I don’t think it was, uh, it was definitely necessary, by the way. There was a ton of mud balls this morning. The mudballs were kind of gone this afternoon. they might be able to get away with not playing preferred wise tomorrow morning. And I’d honestly like that a little bit because there is that element of you’d like to see the ball be played down, but uh I wouldn’t mind the the craziness of a mud ball, too. Uh that might that might help the Americans, too, you know, because how straight the Europeans drove it at times. Hey, maybe it’ll be better in the rough. Let’s throw the mudball in there if we can. Yeah. Yeah, I mean I I thought it was no better evidence of the the condition of the course throughout the entirety of the day of watching Rory launch a drive on 18th of the day. Patrick Anley as well and it just takes one hop and stops almost on the same mark where it landed. So the course is still soft. Be curious to see if we get preferred. I mean I I guess like it go back to your initial question like what do you expect tomorrow? And I I I still feel like Europe is going to hold a lead heading into into singles. It just is a how big is this lead going to be? I can Can they cut it to Can they cut it to a two-point lead? Can they cut it to a one-point lead? Can they get it tied? And by the way, what I’m hearing in my ear right now, 100% Preferred Wise tomorrow morning. So that’s another opportunity. If you wanted to put a Ben Griffin out there, you could to give him another shot. Um, but I I just feel like the European team is just too strong. They’re too good in forsomes. I I feel like they’re going to respond well tomorrow afternoon, the Americans in and for ball. And again, I think they’ll probably win that afternoon session, but I just don’t see enough good pairings all the way across the board to take down Tommy and Rory. I just don’t see anybody taking down potentially Rahm Manhattan. And it just feels like you’re just fighting for a tie tomorrow morning. Now, maybe those guys play poorly tomorrow morning, but from what we’ve seen, uh, nothing indicates that right now. Yeah, it’ll be it’ll be very interesting. I I think we have some comments here from AHA USA uh team four rookies uh and and European team one rookie you know that that being the big difference. So uh okay smiley it it’s uh I some for the audience questions from the question from the audience. Okay I’m I’m looking I’m looking for with a Q fan questions. Okay. Oh here we go. We got a fan question. Charlie, if you were playing tomorrow, who would you be paired with? That’s a good question. So, is is it I can play with anybody? Yeah, I mean, am I an American? Am I a European? I I I mean, Jackson’s Jackson’s dying over here. He’s cracking up. Can we play together? Can you and I play? I think if you and I played a scramble and maybe threw in Gosh, who played the worst today? Um, okay. I don’t want to throw anybody under the bus here. I really don’t want to know. Okay, let’s say we’re Americans and and we’re playing a scramble and Bobby Mack and Arasmus Hoygard. How about this? If you and I played a scramble, how many up would we have to be to beat Rory and Tommy tomorrow on the first E? Yeah, we’re playing a scramble. You and I are playing a scramble. Six up. Six up. Okay. All right. Four up. Four up. I was thinking seven. Seven up, man. Yeah, we come right down to the line. Dude, you’re acting like we’re just going to get up there on a 220 yard shot in there and just casually hit it into the middle of the green. Have you seen me hit the mini driver right now? Did you see Ben Griffin shot on the eighth hole today where he hit it on that anthill up there? Like that’s exactly where I was going to play from. Like I wouldn’t if I had to play a practice round heading out there, I would go chip from there before the round tomorrow morning if we were playing. What do What do you think? All right, scramble. We both hit drives left. We have an 82 yard shot from John Rom from John from John Rom’s ball. Where is that ball going for both of us? No, John Rom on six. The 82 yard shot he hit out of the Oh, I’m good at that. I’m good. I’m good. I’m good out of the fescue. I would have found the round part. Yeah, you put me in the middle of the fairway. That’s a problem. Uh with like a four iron four irons these guys had to hit today. Big problem. I think I’m just dead arming some wedges, controlling my spin, just hitting it right to the pin. Stop it. Well, lots of fun once again right here from the People’s Plaza Smiley. Uh, that’s all for us tonight. This has been Ryder Cup Tea Time with the Smiley Show powered by T-Mobile. USA needs Wesley Bryan.
Jeez 5 1/2 to 2 1/2 and Smylie says it's a US win. In which universe was this a US win!?
Watch Rex and Lav if you want better commentary, less bias than this poor commentary.
americans are just so fucking awkward, europeans so natural
