Most golfers struggle with their downswing path — they either come down **too steep** and slice across it, or get **too shallow** and get stuck under the plane.
In this lesson, I’ll explain the real difference between steep and shallow, and why **higher handicaps** usually need to shallow the club, while **lower handicaps** often need to feel steeper to get back on plane.
✅ What you’ll learn in this video:
– Steep vs Shallow: which one YOU actually need in the downswing
– Why over-the-top slicers must shallow the club
– Why better players often get stuck under the plane
– How pros balance steep vs shallow for perfect impact
– Simple feels and drills to get your downswing on plane every time
This concept is a game-changer for ball striking and consistency. Stop fighting your swing — learn if you should be **steepening** or **shallowing** for YOUR downswing.

Should you come down steeper or should you come down more shallow on your down swing? Welcome to another edition of Field Versus Real. Today we’re going to be covering the difference between coming down a little bit steeper versus coming down a little bit more shallow. There’s a lot of talk today about what direction to work and it’s very confusing. So, what I’m going to do with the feel versus real is I’m going to explain what the real is going on in the golf swing. And that way, you can work on the feel in order to change what you need to do in order to fix your golf swing. So, there really isn’t a a uh correct or the right way. The right way is whatever you need to do in order to fix the situation. So, let’s talk about the golf swing in general. uh to start with. So, right off the bat, when the golfer is set up, hopefully they’re set up in a good setup position and they take their back swing and they take it all the way back up to the top, you’ll notice that I’m going right back along this swing plane. Okay? And then when I come back down, I’m going to be coming back down this plane and coming back down a little bit steeper. So, I certainly wouldn’t be coming back down flatter because if I did that, then I could block shots out to the right and push and then of course I’d have to flip it and pull it around to come back. So, you can see that the real truth about the golf swing is that in the back swing is where you will be actually the shallowest part of the golf swing. And then on the down swing, you can see it starts to get steeper because we’re just going in the opposite direction coming back down. And so the truth is that you do come back down a little bit steeper than your back swing. Matter of fact, after tour players are being measured, uh you’ll notice that their right elbow is about an inch or two or just certainly much higher than the left, which means they’re coming this way in their down swing. So for the real reality, that is what’s happening for the golfer. And usually that is a problem. you know, when the when the golfers say they don’t want to work on coming down shallow, and that’s because they’re already coming down pretty good on plane, and if they came any more shallow than that, then they would end up hitting a lot of those shots out to the right. So, for the better golfers or for the lower handicap golfers, more experienced swings, their tendency is always to get stuck and get blocks out to the right. And so they’re always working on things that will be getting steeper and how to not get stuck underneath. And so I’m going to talk about two drills. One for the stuck golfers and then one for the slicers that come down too steep and figuring out how to shallow that out. So we know the truth obviously now that if you are taking the back swing and you’re on plane that you’d be coming back down on plane a little bit steeper. uh if you did it in numbers, let’s say. Okay, so we have a golf swing here and let’s say that it was a vertical circle and not an angle. So for every degree down, we’d actually be going straight at the target. But because we’re at an incline plane, so now for every degree down, we’re going to the right, but we’re also going out. And out means we’re actually getting steeper in the numbers. and the steeper numbers meaning that we’d be one degree maybe into out here 3 four five all the way to 10 and then the down swing would come back 9 8 7 6 5. So you can see how it’s getting steeper to come back down and so that would be the proper way any of those golfers that worked on shallowing drills that would just hurt their golf swing. And so of course they’re going to close their ears and not work on that. So for those golfers, what we need to work on is how to get steeper. And so Tiger was famous for doing that Olay drill where he worked on hitting the golf ball and getting his arms and hands to get faster in front of his hips because his hips would outra and the elbow would get stuck and then he’d do the Olay flip. So his drill was to see how fast he could get his arms and hands to come down. Because the truth is, whenever I see those golfers that are uh stuck, the lower body usually tends to outra everything and just pulling this along, which ends up dropping everything. So, yes, we do want the hips to get a little bit slower so that we can catch up with the arms. And so, I’m going to modify that drill by actually getting set up in normal way. We’re going to feel like getting our arms and hands. But if we pull the right foot back a little bit and go ahead and hit golf balls by taking it back on plane and just coming back down, you’ll notice that it’ll be very difficult to to overextend the hips and thrust the hips and pull the body. And so it gets the arms and hands in front and it doesn’t keep it even so that uh it just is an extra insurance policy. And you won’t believe how solid you will hit these golf balls, okay? Because you’ll be able to get the hands now out in front of the hips and the hips don’t have a chance to get there and you’ll really understand how the real problem that you’re getting is into this and getting trapped and stuck. And so this is an excellent drill to get the arms and hands out in front and to keep the hips a little bit more quiet so that you can get rid of those blocks and pushes. And so then for the other golfers who tend to slice the ball, they tend to come out to in and with an open face and that ball is being sliced off to the right. And you can pull the ball also coming out to in with a closed face. And so either way, you’re still coming out to end. We call that steep. And so we need to work on trying to feel more shallow. Okay? So the first thing we got to do is hopefully get into a better setup with better grip and posture. Uh because when you get into a better grip and a better setup and posture, then you have a better chance of taking this club on plane. If you’re set up too far away, you can pull the club. If you get too close, you can pick the club up and then you’re going to have to do a lot of rerouting. So, your best bet is working on the fundamentals. I’ve got a few videos out there on my YouTube channel you can see and of course my ebook has all five fundamentals that you can then work on and practice. But after you’ve got the fundamentals proper, you’re here and you’re taking your back swing and you’re up there at the top. Perfect. What I want you to do is actually work on coming back down and feel like you’re swinging out to right field or to first base. Okay? So, an excellent drill that you could do is to put a shaft down on the ground where it’s pointing out to the right a little bit. Okay? So, you’re going to hover the club up in up in the air so you’re not going to hit the shafts. You’re going to just swing the club back on plane and you’re going to practice swinging out to the right with this shaft. So, go ahead and swing it back and then swing it down and swing it out there to the right. And so, uh, you’ll notice how it feels so loopy, but the real reality is so many slicers of the golf ball are taking the club back and then they’re coming back out to in. And so they’re looping it out to end thinking that they’re hitting it straight. And so this is just reversing that loop. And eventually that loop will then start to work towards coming back down on plane. So this is an exaggerated move, but you need to exaggerate the move in order to feel the real difference between the two. There’s no way that you’ll really have that much into out, especially for the golfer who comes out to in. So practicing into out and then slowly working on going down the line. So you can do less and less amounts of into out, but eventually that’s the way to work on those golfers who come out to in and slice the ball. You’ve got to work on shallowing drills. This is one of the best shallowing drills that I’ve used on all of my clients. And you can watch a lot of the lessons also on my YouTube channel that made a huge difference. So, who should shallow? Well, the golfers who cut tend to come steep and out to in. Who should not shallow? It’s the golfers who drop the club, who get stuck and send it out to the right. And so, you’ve got to work on different things and you got to be smart with understanding what you need to do in order to work on uh fixing your situation. So there’s not one answer that everybody needs to shallow, everybody needs to uh get steep. But the real reality is this. 90% of the golfers slice. So they need to work on shallowing. And then the rest of the golfers who are too shallow work on some of these steepening drills. And so let’s try to see if we can’t help everybody hit the ball and get it more hit more greens because that’s the secret to to scoring better.
