THE HERD | Colin Cowherd SHOCKS, Herbert And Harbaugh Are GREATEST DUO Of ALL TIME | Chargers | NFL

win over the New York Giants. Harbaugh Herbert have officially taken over the AFC West. 3-0 all division wins. And yesterday, the Chargers had every reason to lose. Denver’s great pass rush, the Chargers were missing multiple offensive linemen. Khalil Mack still not there. Naji Harris got hurt. They fumbled the opening kickoff in the third. Uh they they were less rested because they played on a short week. And yet Harbaugh and Herbert found a way. Justin Herbert got hammered. He got hit 14 times. That is the most. And the Chargers over the last 20 years have had some bad O lines. That is the most a Charger quarterback has been hit in 20 years. In fact, Justin Herbert was pressured on 55% of his throws. He threw 49 times. He was pressured on over half the most Justin Herbert’s ever been pressured in his career. And yet this kid is extending plays, getting attacked, getting hammered. He He leads the NFL right now in 310 yards passing per game. And we’re still not sure if Quinton Johnson’s any good. And Kenan Allen, who’s had four major surgeries. I mean, if you don’t get Justin Herbert’s greatness, you literally do not understand football. There were seven reasons they should have lost that game. And yet, the greatest coach in the history of football, Jim Harbaugh, pulled him through. And if he went to a lab to create a quarterback, it would be Herbert. It’s the perfect quarterback for him. Tough, physical, smart, willing to be coached, relentless. There have been great matches in America. Simon and Garfuncle, Jordan and Pippet, Abbott and Costello, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Pen and Teller, Sig Freed and Roy. None are better than Herbert and Harbaugh. A love story that’s going to keep going for the next decade. Wow. I thought he was going to say Julian and Colin. Um, but uh I mean there we go. I wonder how many people really uh get this reference here. Uh, you know, it’s, you know, it’s definitely a certain demographic you’re talking to here. Um, Justin Herbert and Harbaugh giving them the the best duo. You guys know I talk a lot about coach quarterback duos. It’s what I talk about most through the Patrick Mahomes Andy Reid lens and why I always have so much belief in that duo specifically over other quarterbacks who lack a duo or another coach who lacks the quarterback, etc. Um, and so I don’t know if Herbert and Harbaugh are are there quite yet. Um, but they’re getting there, right? They’re they’re they’re they’re they’re building that connection. They’re building that relationship. Uh, I’d like to see Harbaugh make things easier for Justin Herbert. I so far right now. I haven’t necessarily seen that uh quite yet. Uh, I would I would like to see him uh make things easier for Herbert. Right now, I see Herbert overcoming a lot of stuff. I mean, that one throw to Keenan Allen, I mean, like, oh man, that was just gorgeous. And and it is true because um listen the Chiefs are obviously down Rashid Rice down worthy but Patrick Mahomes just doesn’t look good. He does not look smooth whether no matter who you throw. He had Travis Kelce wide open like three yards away and he just like straight up missed him. I mean there was just Collins like didn’t even know what to say. He was like uh uh he like shortcircuited for a second. He’s like I don’t know what to say here. Uh, so, um, I mean, and Herbert’s on one, right? I mean, Quinn Johnson looks like I mean, I mean, the dude’s looking like AJ Brown out there. You really are like, is that Justin Jefferson? Like, what is going on? And it really does show you that when you have a quarterback like a Justin Herbert, if you have a guy that can use his hands and catch, I mean, it’s just forget about it. It’s just he’ll just be able to put just put one on you. And that’s why it’s it’s not just a matter of having a great receiver. you need the quarterback who can make all the throws. Um, and Justin Herbert can obviously do that. But it is they get they got to protect him better. And if they can’t protect him better, they got to get the ball out of his hands. That’s what I mean by also Herbert by Harball making things easier for Justin Herbert a little bit. Like, you know, you got to start dialing up these plays that just that get rid of the ball in a in a in a snap here. In a snap. They’re they’re they are still many times just calling hike and just hoping for the best with a Herbert and it’s like that’s a that’s a tough existence. That’s a tough existence. So, but this was a tough gritty win against the Broncos. Um, I mean, here’s what I loved about this game, actually, outside of obviously some of like the the the great throws, is that the Chargers didn’t hurt themselves. And in so many games, especially in these tough, close games, so much of it is just like, we’re just going to let the other team hurt themselves. We’re going to let the other team, and this is what the Chiefs have done for years. are just like, “We’re just going to sit back and let you guys just do your own thing because it’s just you’re just going to give us the game.” Chargers included over the years, Broncos included, right? The just the division as a whole, but the Bills, the Ravens, Eagles, etc. And now the Chargers are on the receiving end of that. Uh because I’m about to I’m going to rip the Broncos for the way how they lost this game. And um the Chargers had three penalties. Three penalties all game. The Broncos had 10. The Broncos gave the Chargers six first downs off penalties alone just from their defense alone. From the defensive penalties, whereas again, the Chargers only had three penalties all game. that is just saying we’re just going to be smart here. We’re just going to be buttoned up here. Like, and it was and it was a close game and it was a game that the Chargers could have lost, but in a game when the other team is just eating themselves, it’s just like we’re we’re we’re just, you know, because the Chargers didn’t have their best game. They they they didn’t like again Justin Herbert being pressured that much and and just, you know, getting his you know, his his his bell rung like that that’s a tough one. But they were eight for 17 on third down. Um, I mean, the the Broncos were two for 13 on third downs. The Chargers had 80 plays. The Broncos only had 48 plays. The Chargers had 29 first downs. 29 first downs. The Broncos had nine. The Chargers dominated the time of possession 36- 23. 36 to 24. But then it was still a 23-20 game. So, like it was lopsided in a lot of directions and the Broncos were really like, “Here’s a penalty. Here’s a penalty. You want a first down? Take a first down.” And you do want to see the Chargers be able to run with that. But to be fair, the Broncos have a great defense. Uh so it’s, you know, it’s understandable and and now the Chargers unfortunately are dealing with some injuries and so there is a juggling act right now. Um, so you you do want to see the the Chargers obviously play better, but this is a tough I think this is a tougher division. I think the Broncos are a lot better than their record shows. So, I think like, you know, in that type of game, it’s it’s a little bit more defendable. Um, but like you know, I I I guess the way how I look at some of these teams and the way how I when I watch these games, when I look at a team like with Justin Herbert, Harball, uh, the Chargers as a whole and whatnot, when I see another team is really helping you out with like all the penalties and whatnot, and I see a team like the Chargers again getting all these first downs, moving the chains, etc., etc., etc., and you wi and you win a game that was in the bounce, you could have lost it. Absolutely could have lost it. um you’re just like you got to make sure that you limit those moments because sometimes the luck runs out. And I’m not saying that the Chargers won because of luck, of course, but I just mean like sometimes it just sometimes that ball that tips off the fingers of of Mims or whoever, like he catches it and then it’s a touchdown or they convert that first down and now they now they win the game. You know, the the Eagles played an awesome game. um two blocked field goals and and you know it was an absolute wild insane game. But in the playoffs if you’re banking on blocking a 40 yard field goal and turning it and returning it for a touchdown to win the game to get to the NFC Championship game, I mean good luck with that, right? It’s it’s just it’s just it’s not a way to live. And so you want to see the Chargers just be able to put some space in these games. But it’s but it’s but it’s been tough for them because it is three divisional games. Um they are obviously winning but and it is the first three weeks of the season. Um but you do just want to see more of a gap here when you have that lopsided, you know, in terms of the first downs and the and the third down conversions, uh the time of possession, the penalty discrepancy, like all that type of stuff. Like if I just gave you those numbers, you would say, “Oh gosh, the Broncos got to have like what, 10 points and the Chargers have like 20, you know, this game was what, 28-10.” And the fact that it was 23-20, and you’re like, “Ah.” And you know that Justin Herbert’s getting crushed all game long. I mean, that’s what’s pretty remarkable, getting all those first downs and Justin Herbert’s just getting, you know, pressured nonstop. Um, I mean, pretty pretty wild game. But it was a great game and it was a and it was a tough, gritty game and it was the definition of a divisional game. Um, but I think if you’re a Chargers fan, you feel great. You feel excited. You you you watch that Chiefs uh Giants game and you’re like, “What the heck is this? This is our division to lose right now. Like we are in the driver’s seat.” Like we are we are the team to beat. But if you want to win the playoff games, if you want to elevate, if you want to not just be, “Hey, we won the division. Hooray.” Be like, “No, we’re a legitimate contender.” you know, put us in the conversation with the other top teams in the NFL when you’re given that many gifts throughout a game. You just want to see them be able to just really just run with it, right? That’s what you want to see the Chargers be able to do. We haven’t quite seen it just yet. Uh, and again, now they have to juggle some injuries, which is just gosh, so frustrating, but hopefully nothing is is too um debilitating in in that regard. But we’ll find out soon enough. But still a great win, still a positive win, and still an important win. Uh going up 3 0 in the division and obviously for, you know, the year and the record. I mean just a massive massive step forward to um really ensuring that they uh you know win the division for the first time in a long time. So um still a great step forward. But those are just my thoughts. I’d absolutely love to hear yours. What do you guys all think about the Los Angeles Chargers? Um has Harball made them serious Super Bowl contenders? That’s the question at the bottom of the screen. Uh and how do you feel about this game against the Broncos? Let me know in the comments below. I read every single comment. 1. Yeah of course Herbert and Harbaugh aren’t on that Mahomes and Reid level yet. Herbert didn’t inherit a team that was winning 10+ games with Alex Smith. Herbert also hasn’t had the same head coach who is arguably the best offensive minded head coach ever for his whole career so far.

  2. My position/opinion is still waiting to be changed on GR competence. I did not notice any adjustments to mitigate deficiencies in OL. GR seemed to just punt and revert to hero ball by QB. The fact that OL is weak link in this team after abysmal 2024 season, falls on GR to me. He had an opportunity to push Horitz and Harbaugh harder in offseason to bolster OL and yet now after 3 games, it looks like OL is going from OK to bad. Minter on D side, coaches to produce effective results with what he

  3. Bonito had 2 Sacks and was held at least 4 or 5 times or he would of got to Herbert with 5 or 6 Sacks they got round one but will get Smoked in Denver period!

  4. The Broncos were playing so dirty AF. Bounty Gate 2.0! Only way they could stop the Chargers was by continuously committing penalties!

  5. the Chargers were a few dropped passes from losing this game, a bit disturbed by the secondary's lack of focus on some of those plays there were 3 bombs that could have changed the outcome of this game and they made one of them. D gotta tighten up some more.

  6. I’ve never once doubted Herbert after that AFC loss against the raiders to goto the playoffs he was making buzzer beater touchdowns and making plays I’ve never seen anyone do. Idk where this myth of he can’t perform in the big moment come from.

  7. One game at a time one snap at a time. If we stay focused we can play like that we would be the elite team and learn how there gonna deal with playoff pressure and get the win.

  8. Harbaugh has had Alex Smith with QB IQ without the physical intangibles. Then Harbaugh has Kapernick with the intangibles and low QB IQ. KAPERNICK + Alex Smith=Herbert
