GREENWICH, Conn. (September 20, 2025) – The Men’s, Women’s and Senior Division semifinal matchups at the fourth playing of The Farrell are set at The Stanwich Club.
The Men’s Mid-Amateur Division will feature Christian Cavaliere of Hudson National against Matt Lowe of MGA eClub – Long Island and William Davenport of Whitemarsh Valley Country Club against Johnny Spellerberg of Omaha Country Club. The Senior Amateur Division includes Jim Strickland of Whisper Rock Golf Club paired against Ronan Culligan of Saucon Valley Golf Club and Kevin VandenBerg of Beaver Meadow Golf Club versus Robert Funk of Bear Creek Golf Club. In the Women’s Mid-Amateur Division, Lauren Greenlief of International Country Club will face Courtney Dow-Rowles of Fields Ranch, along with Ina Kim-Schaad of Deepdale Golf Club against Perrine Gouin Petit of Ligue de Paris.

In the afternoon matches, Cavaliere defeated Mark Costanza of Baltusrol, 3 and 1 to advance to the semifinals. Cavaliere won the first hole before dropping the second to even the match where it would stay until he won the eighth, making birdie on the par three. Costanza bounced back winning the ninth with a birdie but Cavaliere made his move taking advantage of Costanza’s mistakes, winning holes No. 15 through 17 en-route to the win.
Lowe advanced to the semifinals after defeating Rick Dowling of Golf Performance Center, 5 and 3. After losing the first hole Lowe evened the match on No. 3 before winning three in a row to make the turn at 3-up. The back nine proved similar with Dowling winning No. 12 before Lowe won holes No. 13 through 15 to close out the match.
Davenport is back in the semifinals this year after defeating Bobby Leopold of Wannamoisett Country Club, 3 and 2. Leopold took an early lead on the front winning three holes to make the turn 1-up. But, Davenport changed the momentum on the back winning holes 10, 12, 14, and 16 to win the match.
Spellerberg earned a spot in the semifinals after winning over TJ Shuart of Fort Lauderdale Country Club, 2 and 1. After a scorching hot start winning the first three holes Shuart erased the deficit tying the match through the front nine. Spellerberg proved to be too much on the back nine and after briefly going 1-down, he won three of the final five to close out the match on No. 17.
Strickland advanced after taking down Kevan McKinney of The Stanwich Club, 3 and 2, in the Senior division. Strickland held off a late comeback from McKinney outlasting a comeback to win on No. 16. Culligan is in the semifinals after facing off against Pat Pierson of Hollow Brook. Culligan won 4 and 3, controlling most of the match after taking a lead on the front nine, continuing steady play for the rest of the match.
VandenBerg took down No. 2 seed Bob Beck of Lehigh Valley Country Club, 3 and 2. After a quiet front nine saw VandenBerg 1-down at the turn he found his groove winning holes No. 13 through 16 to advance. He will face Robert Funk who won his match against David Greenlaw of Garden City Golf Club. Funk dominated most of the match by building a commanding lead to win 6 and 5 against Alan LeFevre of The Stanwich Club. VandenBerg is the lone past champion across all divisions still in the brackets.
In the Women’s Mid-Amateur division, No. 1 seed Greenlief defeated Corinna Limbocker of the Tuxedo Club, 6 and 5, in a match in which she never trailed. She faces Courtney Dow-Rowles, who advanced over inaugural Farrell champion Catherine Mcevoy of Innis Arden in a match that saw several momentum shifts before Dow-Rowles closed it out with a par on No. 18.
Ina Kim-Schaad punched her ticket to the semis after taking down Meghan Stasi of Tavistock Country Club, 3 and 2, for the second straight year in the event. Kim-Schaad made the turn 2-up, before holding off a comeback and closing the match off on No. 17. Gouin Petit advanced after taking down reigning champion Jackie Rogowicz of Yardley Country Club, 2 and 1. Another back and forth match as they made the turn all square before Gouin Petit won three of the final five holes to close out.
The Senior Division semifinal matches will start at 7:30 a.m. and 7:40 a.m., with the Men’s Mid-Amateur division semifinals following at 7:50 and 8:00 a.m. The Women’s semifinals will go off third at 8:10 a.m. and 8:20 a.m.
The Stanwich Club has deep championship roots, having hosted the U.S. Mid-Amateur in 2002, won by 20-time MGA champion George Zahringer. In the years since, the club has welcomed the Palmer Cup and Wyndham Cup. It stands among 19 Met Area clubs that have hosted all three MGA majors– the Ike Championship (1989), Met Amateur (2004 and 2013) and Met Open (1972 and 1996).
The Farrell family has long been synonymous with golf in the Met Area. Billy was one of five children and grew up in in New Jersey; his father Johnny, the 1928 U.S. Open champion, was the Head Professional at Baltusrol Golf Club. While competing on tour, where he played in eight U.S. Opens and seven PGA Championships, Billy also worked as an assistant at Baltusrol. Billy and his wife Alvera had seven children; for 20 years, his son Bobby served as the Director of Golf at Tamarack Country Club in Greenwich, Conn. The Farrells were named Golf Family of the Year in 1966 by the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association.
