Parknasilla Golf Club members came together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their association and compete in the relaunched Cearbhaill O’Dálaigh Classic competition earlier this month.

The anniversary celebration and tournament, which took place on Sunday, September 7, saw old friends convene to honour their club’s rich history and look ahead to a vibrant future.

The club was founded in 1975 by a group that included Parknasilla Hotel manager Brendan Maher, Sonny Looney, Jackie Moriarty and Tom Doyle.

It was established to complement the existing golf course at the hotel and the club’s inaugural committee was led by Sonny Looney, with the first ever Captain’s Prize won by Pat Dwyer.

The recent anniversary celebration saw a special tribute to the club’s founding members and early contributors, including Sonny Looney, Mossie Walshe, Noelie O’Sullivan, Pat O’Dwyer and Alice O’Sullivan – who was instrumental in forming the Ladies’ Club – take place.

All were honoured with framed aerial photos of Parknasilla golf course.

The celebration also saw the much-anticipated revival of the Cearbhall O’Dálaigh Classic, a three-person Scramble Open Competition that was first held in 1988.

The competition attracted 35 teams and it was won by Dylan Wallace, Tom Crushell and Darran Allman from Kenmare Golf Club.

The runners-up were Dion Burke, Shane Larkin and Eoghan O’Sullivan while the third-placed team was comprised of Mary T O’Sullivan, Mary Gleeson and Fergal Harrington.

Prize presentations and anniversary celebrations were held at The Loft at Dan Murphy’s Bar that evening.
