In a surprising turn of events, Scotty Sheffller’s impressive streak of 21 consecutive rounds scoring below 70 has come to an end. During the first round of the Procourt Championship, he found himself trailing the leader McKenzie Hughes by a significant margin of seven strokes. As the leaderboard stands, Hughes from Canada leads with an impressive score of minus9, while American players Ben Griffin and Michael McCarthy are close behind, both at minus8. Other notable competitors include Luke Griffin and Russell Henley, who are at minus7, and Aaron Albertson at minus6. Sheffller, who is currently ranked as the world’s number one golfer, managed to finish the day at minus2 alongside fellow competitors like Sam Burns and several others who are still in the mix. This marks a notable moment for Sheffler, who had previously shared the record for the longest streak of sub 70 rounds with Patrick Kentlay. Since March, he has consistently placed in the top eight, showcasing his remarkable skill and consistency. Reflecting on his performance, Sheffller expressed his frustration, stating, “I think it was a pretty frustrating day overall. I felt like I did some things well out there. I just wasn’t quite getting the reward.” Looking ahead, Sheffller is preparing for his third appearance at the Ryder Cup, which is set to kick off in the United States on September 26th. He is not alone in this preparation. Nine other members of the 12player US team are also participating in this week’s event to fine-tune their games. Russell Henley, who shot a commendable 65, and US Open champion JJ Spawn, who finished with a score of 67, are among those gearing up for the RDER Cup. However, the rest of the American contingent struggled to break the 70 mark. Henley noted the unique atmosphere of the tournament, saying, “I think it was a little different today just knowing that all of us were kind of paired in the same little area of tea times, and we obviously did spend a lot of time with each other this week. So, it definitely feels slightly different than it would have if this tournament was in March. You know, the RDER Cup is right around the corner. The competition is heating up with the top nine players on the leaderboard separated by just four strokes. An amateur Jackson Kven is also making a name for himself among the contenders. McKenzie Hughes, the current leader at 34 years old, is a two-time winner on the PGA Tour with his last victory occurring in 2022. He started strong making nine birdies in the first 13 holes. But bogeies on the 14th and 15th holes dashed his hopes of achieving a remarkable score of 59. As the tournament progresses, it will be interesting to see how the dynamic shift, especially with the RDER Cup looming, will Sheffller bounce back and reclaim his form, or is this the beginning of a new chapter in his competitive journey?
