David Carey is on the cusp of advancing from the DP World Tour Q-School Stage One Qualifier at Donnington Grove in England, while Cormac Sharvin enters the final round inside the qualification places.
Rounds of 71 and 69 left Dubliner Carey in good shape at the halfway mark, and after a solid start to round three, he caught fire on the sixth, reeling off three birdies in four holes and added another three in the opening three holes on the back side to move to -10 overall. Back-to-back bogeys on 15 and 16 threatened to undo much of the good work, but a closing birdie on 18 moved him back to -9 and he’ll go into the final round in fifth place overall with the top 17 and ties advancing.
Cormac Sharvin began the day on one-under after rounds of 71 and 72 on days one and two respectively, and he knew he’d make to make a move on day three to lessen the workload required on day four. And he did exactly that, making six birdies and two bogeys to move to -5 overall and climb into a four-way tie for 10th.
Paul McBride and Tom Dowdall are just outside the provisional qualification mark at -3 after rounds of 70 and 72 respectively, while Marc Boucher responded to a disappointing second-round 75 with a two-under-par 70 to move back into red figures at -1 and into a tie for 28th, giving himself a fighting chance on day four.
Ignatius McGuinness will need to go low on the final day from a one-over scoreline, while the task ahead of Niall Kearney (+3) and Michael Young (+5) is much greater.
Meanwhile, at Arlandastad Golf Club in Sweden, John Murphy, the lone Irishman in the field, produced his best round of the week with a one-under 69 to move to +4 overall and up to T35. He’ll need to throw caution to the wind on the final day with the provisional qualification mark at level-par where three players share 15th place.
