ABILENE, Texas — Maxwell Municipal Golf Course was built in 1934, and now, it’s up for sale.

“I was hearing rumors, rumors, rumors, and I’m going, ‘who’s buying it? Who’s buying it? We’re not going to close it out. We can’t, we can’t,’ said Bob Pase, a local golfer. “So I was just thinking about what can I do? I was thinking about reaching out to this, the city council and the mayor .”

The City of Abilene has posted a $1.3 million bid for the sale of the course.

The deal comes with conditions. The course must remain open to the public, memberships may be offered, and local school teams must be allowed to keep practicing there.

“Abilene needs a public course that is not as expensive as other courses around here because people like me would love to play golf, but finances don’t allow me to play every day a week,” Pase said. “I have my own budget. I could play once a week and this course is perfect for that.”

For Pase, who moved to Abilene last year, Maxwell has become a place to make friends and stick to a weekly golf routine without breaking his budget.

“It’s not in my budget,” Pase said. “It’s never been in my budget to be a member of a country club. Not everybody has that financial ability to be a member of a country club.”

Other longtime golfers shared the same concern, that Maxwell’s affordability and accessibility remain intact.

“Well, you know, it’s the cheapest place in town, so that’s what everybody kind of looks for here,” said Tod Lawrence, another local golfer.

Lawrence said he wants to see improvements to the greens, but more than anything, he wants to see Maxwell continue serving the community.

“I think it’s a big part of Abilene,” Lawrence said. “I don’t understand why the city doesn’t see it.”

If you are interested in bidding, you can view the course on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m.
