Tiger Woods Under Fire: Did He Really ‘Bottle’ Team USA Ryder Cup Captaincy?
Tiger Woods may have bottled his opportunity to captain team USA at the RDER Cup. According to Rory Mroyy’s former agent, Andrew Chubby Chandler, the 15time major champion has not featured in the biionial showdown since 2018 when he lost all four of his matches as team Europe secured victory. Woods was widely tipped to be the American captain this year as team USA chased their first Rder Cup triumph since 2021. However, he declined the position, citing his commitments with the TGL and his involvement in discussions with the public investment fund PIF. As a result, Keegan Bradley was appointed, becoming the youngest American captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963. Chandler, who managed Mroy for 4 years, suggested that Woods may have shied away from the role because of the difference in how the RDER Cup is valued across the Atlantic. They offered it to Tiger. He did not want it. Chandler told Casino Hawks. I think he might have bottled it. I do not know. He would say maybe there was not enough time, but that is nonsense. They did not treat it like we do though. America does not treat it as a big thing the way Europe does, and they never have. Patrick Reed is one of the few who does, but he is not in. Last year, Woods explained that he turned down the opportunity because he could not commit the required time. He maintained, however, that he remained open to taking on the role in the future. With my new responsibilities and time commitments involved, I felt like I would not be able to commit the time to team USA and the players required as a captain, Woods said. That does not mean I would not want to captain a team in the future. If and when I feel it is the right time, I will put my hat in the ring for this committee to decide. Despite declining the position, Woods has still played a behind-the-scenes role in shaping Team USA. Bradley revealed that he leaned heavily on Woods for advice while selecting his team. It is interesting because so many times in my career, I have leaned on other players to help me navigate situations, whether endorsements or tournaments. Bradley said, “I have no one to talk to about this. I cannot call someone who has done it. Tiger Woods did it at the President’s Cup. I have spoken to him a great deal
