What? Who? Me? Well, I’m just not really into working the exact positions in my golf swing. Can you just show me a way to feel the difference between swing path directions? Welcome back to 15-minute golf drills. If you are somebody out there who needs to work on their swing path a little bit, but you hate working the positions in your swing and you just want to feel it out, this is the drill for you. Also, if you’re somebody that’s about to go play and you know that your path is too far one way or another, this drill is a great quick fix before you go tee it up. All that you’re going to need to do this is the golf ball that you’re going to hit and an extra ball. Now, I’m going to use this alignment stick as a visual reference just so that you can see where I’m going to set the extra ball up. So, if I’m pointing somewhere at those blue barrels out there, I’m going to imagine my target line extended behind the golf ball. If I am somebody that’s coming too far from the inside, I’m going to place the golf ball about a foot to a foot and a half behind the one I’m going to hit and a few inches inside that line. If I’m somebody that’s coming too far from over the top, I’m going to do the exact same thing on the other side. Now that we know where to place that golf ball, we can get rid of this alignment stick. Once you get good at it and you know where it is, you don’t even need the alignment stick to help set it up. Your whole goal, depending on which side you’re placing that extra golf ball, is to just miss it when you’re taking a swing. I’m somebody that comes too far over the top and I place this golf ball slightly to the outside of my target line and about a foot to a foot and a half behind myself. Can I take a swing where I’m nowhere near that extra golf ball on the way down instead of coming over the top and smashing it into the ground? So, it looks something like this. See how that divot’s now pointing a little bit to the right? And the opposite’s true. If I’m somebody that’s coming too far from the inside, I’m just going to flip that golf ball to the other side of the target line. My whole goal is to miss that golf ball on the way down. So, I need to work it a little bit more out so that I can swing over top of it, which would give you something that looks like this. Divots a lot straighter, if not a touch left. Now, if that golf ball behind you makes you a little too nervous that if you hit it, something bad’s going to happen or you’re going to hurt yourself, just use a head cover. It’s a lot softer, and if you hit it, nothing bad’s going to happen. If you’re not somebody that wants to feel the exact swing positions that you need to be in, throwing a marker down there on the ground, knowing that you got to come a little bit more over the top or a little bit more from the inside is a great way to practice it. If you have that object on the inside, we’re trying to hit a little bit more of a cut because we’re coming more over. If you have that object a little bit more on the outside, we’re trying to hit a little bit more of a draw because we’re coming from the inside. Just don’t get those two mixed up, please.
