Jamie Weir is here for plenty more analysis on those six picks that Keegan Bradley has made. He was given a hypothetical one and sort of flat battered it. You can answer it instead. If Keegan Bradley wasn’t picking the team, would Keegan Bradley be in it? 100% in my opinion. I’m still sort of slightly picking my job off the floor because I think that shocked us all. All the intel was that he was going to pick himself. Statistically over the last 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 24 months, he has been one of the 12 best American golfers. We know what he’s like in terms of of his temperament. He’s a chest pumping proud American. He hasn’t played in the Ryder Cup since Gan Eagles in 2014. And there’s a famous story that he hasn’t unpacked his kit bag since 2014 because he was so desperate to make another Ryder Cup team. He should have been on the team in Rome two years ago. Zack Johnson, in my opinion, made a very poor call by not selecting him. And he said it himself there. There was a period this year where he was on the team like he was going to play on the team. So, I just wonder what has changed his opinion. Have his assistant captain said to him, “Look, we just don’t think it’s possible for you to do both roles to the very best of your ability.” We heard him say how it’s it’s breaking his heart to have to make this call. And I’m playing a slight amateur psychologist here, but just sort of looking at his body language. I I’m almost reading between the lines and thinking he would love to have picked himself, but we kept hearing that phrase repeated, doing what’s best for the team. Doing what’s best for the team. And I think ultimately to do what’s best for the team, he’s had to fall in the sword and say that the 13th best player if you like would bring more to the team and allow to free me up just to do think that he would he would be thinking oh I can’t send myself out in the morning. I can only play maybe the afternoons or because I have to think about selections for the afternoon or not possible to do both roles the best you like any in any walk of life if you’re trying to do two things at once. It’s you can’t do both roles to the very best of your ability. You know, he alluded to the fact that when Arnold Palmer was the playing captain back in 1963, the Rder Cup is a very different beast now than it was back then. And how can you constantly how can you possibly keep a breast of how all your players are getting on if you’re out in the course yourself? Not even if you’re out in the course yourself, but if you’re trying to mentally get prepared to go out in the course, if you’re heading to the range to warm up, if you’re trying to get your your mind in the right place to go out there and try to beat Tommy Fleetwood and Rory Mroy in four balls. How can you do that when you’re thinking, “Oh, hang on. play plan A didn’t work this morning. I need to revert to plan B. How did he get on this morning? Is he going to go out this afternoon? Getting your pairings in on time. It’s just not possible to do both roles. And every former captain I’ve spoken to in the last couple of weeks, the likes of Sam Torren or Nick Faldo, Paul McInley, Tom Watson added his name to the list earlier this week as well, said it’s just not possible to do both roles. So, I think it’s it’s with a heavy heart he has probably made the decision that it’s not possible. Any other names you want to grab off the floor? I I’m not saying that I’ve got them on speed dial. Yeah. No, I can tell you I have not got them on speed dial. Let’s talk about some of the others and no surprise about Thomas Morawa or Kantlay. Sam Burns played a couple of years ago. So, let’s talk about the two rookie rookies. What will Ben Griffin and Cam Young give America? Ben Griffin has stepped up to the plate this year and shown that he’s a world-class player. He’s won twice in the PGA Tour. One of those wins was in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, which is the team event. So, it shows that he’s he’s an easy man to pair. um gritty, nuggety, you know, great. The kind of mentality you want in a Ryder Cup. I’ve I think he might be one of those guys who really surprises a lot of European uh golf fans who he isn’t necessarily a household name, but I think he’s going to be a really tough competitor to try to bring down in match play. And Cam Young for me was a no-brainer because he makes a ton of birdies. He hits the ball a country mile. Um he’s the perfect core state and he’s a New Yorker. So he is going to be as much as Justin Thomas is probably the emotional heartbeat of the US side, Cameron Young is going to be that as well. The the the Long Islanders are really going to get behind Cam Young. So I think he’s a great shout. I think he’s easy to pair as well. As said he just makes so many birdies and that’s what you want in match play golf. So four rookies in total in their team. A lot of churn from their side since Rome. I think six of the guys um that were on the side in Rome are in this team. So six changes. It’s quite a lot. And when you look to how settled the European side is going to be, I wonder whether America are a little bit behind the eightball from that point of view. Just very quickly before you go, then a quick plug for Monday and Luke Donald. Right. Yeah. Luke Donald is coming to announce his picks at 2:00 on Monday on deadline day. Um I think it’s much more straightforward from Luke Donald’s point of view and we’re looking at it’s probably going to be it’s almost certainly going to be separ Shane Li Victor Hovland Ludvigberg Matt Fitzpatrick and John Ram which would have mean 11 of the side from Rome or on this team and the one change has been to swap one twin for the other. So I’ll be telling Luke when I see him on Monday that you don’t need to bother with the team with the team photo and Beth Paige just use the same photo from Rome. He’ll be thrilled.
