I gained 20 pounds in hopes of bombing the golf ball further down the fairway… but did it actually work? In this video, I take you through the entire journey—what I ate, how I trained, and the results on my swing speed, ball speed, and carry distance.

From chasing 300 yards of carry to realizing what really adds distance, this experiment shows the highs, lows, and lessons learned. If you’ve ever thought about bulking up for golf, you’ll want to see how this plays out.

Yes, you read that title, right? I gained 20 lbs just to hit the ball further. Sounds crazy, right? But what if I told you it didn’t work? It was a total fail. Let’s get into it. Almost a year ago, I was on a journey to hit the golf ball 300 yd. Carry, not total. My plan was simple. Eat big, get big, big drives. I thought if Bryson Dshamble could bulk up and hit missiles, so can I. As we all learned, mass time acceleration equals force. In other words, the bigger I am, the further I’ll hit it. So, here’s some context. When I started the journey, I was around 160 lb. On average, I was carrying the golf ball with my driver around 250 to 260 on a good day. My swing speed on average was around 107 mph, and my highest PR was 111. Not very impressive. Ball speed was anywhere from 153 to like 157. Also not impressive. Decent, but not great. Definitely ain’t no 300 yard carry. But that was the good news. I knew I had much more in the tank. I start eating like crazy. Pizza, hamburger, late night snacks, chocolate, anything you name it. I saw it. I devoured it. Within the first 2 months, I gained 10 lbs. Keep in mind, I was doing some swing speed training this whole time. And while I did not see my carry numbers, I did have a PR moment where I hit 120 mph swing speed. And that one number gave me a hope I was doing something right. So the next day, I walked into the simulator expecting 280, 290 at least. Took a few swings and boom, nothing. Nada. Same thing, same swing, same ball speed, same swing speed, same carry, same total, same short distances. No improvements at all. To be honest, during this point, I was very confused. I don’t know why I didn’t hit it any further. So, what would you do? I doubled down. I gained another 10 lb. Here’s a picture of me to prove it. Before, after. 20 pounds heavier. Life was a little bit more tough walking around putting on shirts. During the second phase, I shifted my focus purely on strength training. I thought maybe, just maybe, I’m not strong enough to hit the ball 300 yard. Maybe I wasn’t pushing myself at the gym. So, I went heavier and heavier. And I definitely thought this will translate into further distance within my swing. But when it was time to go back to the simulator, boom, nothing again. Same numbers. My average carry was still around 250 to 260. No matter how hard I swung the club, I was lost. This whole experiment really took me around 4 to 5 months to hit that 20 lb mark. And ultimately what I achieved was just getting a lot chunkier and still unable to hit at 300 yd. Which leads me to 7 months later. I’m currently back in my normal body weight. And after months in the lab researching and learning, I still can’t do it. If you thought this was some kind of happy ending YouTube video like you see in every other video, it’s not. It’s the reality. So, what you’re watching right now is currently me a couple weeks back. I’m doing some just swing speed training drills at the track. Man, as you can see from the numbers, it’s definitely has improved from the past um 11 months, from the start of it. Once I hit that 20 lb mark, there’s a huge jump after that because I was focusing on less size and strength and more of speed training. So, man, it’s just I’m I’m flabbergasted. I don’t know why I still can’t hit it 300 yd. I feel like I’m plenty strong. I feel like I’m athletic enough. Like I can touch rim on a 10 ft passport core. I my lifts I feel I’m plenty strong to hit it 300 yards. I don’t think I’m just built for 300 yard drives. But I look at guys like Ken Morawa, like Minu Lee, not to pick on them or anything because they’re Asian and I’m Asian, but they just don’t look super strong. They don’t look super strong at all, yet they hit it miles. And I’m confused because it’s just frustrating because I feel like I have the abilities to hit at 300 yards to swing it a lot faster. But as you can see from the numbers, um, my carry number has increased tremendously. Um, it’s going anywhere from 12 to 15 yards further now. So, I’m carrying it typically on a bad day like 265, but on a really good day, you know, 270, 274 around, which is huge. And also the ball speed, you know, I’m cracking over 160 now, which is a huge trajectory from dancing and playing around from the mid 150s. There’s just something I got to regroup or just train harder to reach that next level to like the 170 mph ball speed. And some of these drives, as you’re seeing, I’m hitting 280 carry with only like 110 m an hour. So, I feel I’m not that far off from getting that 300 yard carry mark. It’s just But there is one thing to conclude from this video is from that weight experiment. Honestly, it did not help a lot. It did not help a lot at all. Um, I really think swinging it fast is those fast twitch muscle fibers. Um, I think getting strong does help tremendously, but it’s not everything. It’s not everything. I realized much more about my swing once I did more swing speed training. It’s a lot more core. Your core has to be super strong. And also your legs. Your legs is the powerhouse for the speed. So, I’m starting to change my thought process when it comes to the following year since we’re entering um winter season here in the Midwest. So, definitely going to change up my my workout routines. Um training for more speed instead of strength. I really do think when you see these smaller guys or less built guys, it’s all about fast twitch muscle fibers. The amount of force, amount of speeds these guys can create is just speechless. And I have a lot to go. I have a lot to go. So, the good news is there’s always next year. We are making progress. Um, we’re not stalemating here or anything. So, we always have next year and the year after that and the year after that because golf is a long journey. It’s a long sport. So, as long as I stay consistent and as long as I just work a little bit harder than the day before, hopefully we’ll get to that number pretty close. But going from 250 to like 275, 280 is huge in the game. So, I’m really excited for next season. Um, just got to work a little bit harder and then hopefully we’ll crack that 300. That’s all I have for you today. Um, thanks for watching as always. This is your boy. I’m troll boy.

  1. Center of the club face first guess. Keeping the spin rate down would be my second guess. Tempo third. All I know is when I hit a really big drive I feel like all of the coil is in a line from my left shoulder through my core to my left hip and it unwinds with that left leg push. I don't carry 300 and I'm 20 years older and 70lbs fatter, but my numbers are similar to yours. Maybe try being a little longer with your take away to get those muscles stretched out and able to make a bigger contraction. Good stuff dood. Love the channel.

  2. Try fit for golf. The workouts there will help you for building your body for golf and swing speed.

  3. I have nothing to offer, just that there are plenty of us who can only wish that we could carry the ball 250 yds. Appreciate your analytical approach and dedicated effort to try to improve. Well done!
