Castlebar Golf Club have sealed a place in the final of the Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy at scenic Woodenbridge GC, Co. Wicklow, after a merited victory over Belvoir, Belfast, in the penultimate round.

The win was clinched by Anne O’Sullivan and Ann Gallagher on the first play-off hole of their closely-fought encounter of the All-Ireland series.

Two down after 13 holes, having earlier led by a similar margin, they clawed back the match in dramatic style after requiring a win on the 18th to force a sudden-death play-off.

Their well-orchestrated success on the 19th hole was enough to seal Castlebar’s passage, the Connaught champions having earlier picked up two of the five points on offer.

The composed partnership of Deirdre Moylette and Margaret Tighe gave the Mayo side a timely boost by winning their match on the 17th, two up with one to play.

Within minutes, Margaret Tuffy and Ilish McGing, who had been on control for long periods, secured a second point on the 15th green, 4&3.

Now Castlebar were within touching distance of the prestigious decider.

And there was long, agonising wait before the decisive point was achieved by the O’Sullivan and Gallagher with their heroic finish.

The two other pairings – Gina Kelly and Edel Burke and Sheila Baynes and Ger Lyons – were called in amid wonderful celebrations by the Castlebar players and their many supporters who made the long journey to Co. Wicklow.

Now they await the outcome of the second semi-final between Charleville and Carton House.

The final takes place tomorrow (Sunday), starting at 11 a.m.
