Just an Average Golfer giving unbiased opinions on all things golf, product tests, Golf travel vlogs and golf news!

Right, finally in today’s video, I have a box full of innovation. It’s a gamecher. It’s a disruptor. It’s something well worth talking about and could change your opinion on your next set of irons. As you know, in recent videos, I’ve mentioned the lack of uh enthusiasm towards club reviews because not a great deal has been going on. But these irons you’re going to look at in today’s video, they sort of change things. They challenge the status quo and make you question, like I said, where would you buy your next set of irons because these are half the price of their competitors, let’s say, in the same space, but perform equally as well, if not better. So, these irons are from Vice Golf. Let me start by saying I have never hit a Vice product until the past couple of days, and I’m super impressed. And we’ve started off with what is the 01 model. It is a two-piece forged hollowbodied iron. So, we know that category. We know where it fits in. It’s your tailor-made P790 is probably at the top of the tree, but there’s a lot in between that that this is competing with. So, why do I think it’s so special? Well, let’s start off by saying how good does this thing look? We took a lot of images this morning because this is such an attractive product to look at. So, first of all, it looks super clean. It looks really nice in the bag. That’s one box ticked. That’s a five iron. Feels incredible. And that is the first thing that I really want to talk about as to why I think these are interesting. Every hollowbodied iron that I have ever tried that suggests it’s forged doesn’t have the feel of a forged iron. They have a clicky sound to them. Pretty much everyone I’ve ever tried. and Vice have managed to overcome that issue. If I’m honest with you, I read the word forged on the back, hit these irons for the first few days, and just assumed they were a single piece of steel and it was a true forged iron. It wasn’t until I read later that these were a two-piece forged iron and hollow body. So, I was super surprised to find that out. And that just goes to show just how good these things feel off that face. How good does that feel? That’s a seven iron this time around. Once again, felt superb. But the thing that interests me on the next level is the shaping and the profile of these things. And that’s because often a lot of golfers will get stuck in the middle of decision making when buying irons like me in terms of that profile. That’s a P790. We’ll use that barometer. Again, it’s a bit chunky for my liking. Then you go down to a P770 and the whole sort of face becomes just that little bit more compact and small. These sit somewhere in between. I would say that the face seems fairly big, but the top line and that bottom sole is on the thinner side. So, for me, they just sit perfectly visually in terms of what I want to look down on uh when I’m at a dress. Give me plenty of confidence, but still sit like a sleek forged iron. The other thing I want to mention, hopefully we’ve got a closeup of it, is the way that the leading edge has been shameferred on all of the irons. They just seem to have taken a little bit off that front edge and they sit really tight to the turf and again it’s supposed to improve on club turf interaction. Don’t know whether I can justify that. But what I do like is the way it just sits at a dress really neat and compact. So again, I think that’s three boxes ticked, but the biggest ones are yet to come. But on this channel, we like to substantiate our claims, let’s say. So it’s not always me just saying it’s clubs are great. Have we got anything to back it up? Well, of course, we went indoors. We got on to Trackman, and let’s have a look what it said in terms of data for a five, a seven, and a 9 iron in the hands of an average golfer. So, here’s where it all gets interesting. What does the data tell us? Is it matching up to what’s been seen out on the golf course so far? Well, from a numbers perspective, data only, I’ve got to say it’s hugely positive. Started off with nine iron, average carry distance of 124. The important thing to remember is we’ve gone back to more traditional lofts. So in terms of the 7 iron which is always the barometer everybody understands where that is 31 degrees loft on the 7 iron. So a 124 carry um other interesting launches high land angle is ridiculous in terms of coming down from the clouds peak height average of 90 ft and a 67 spin. You’re going to see with all this data from me hitting indoors off a mat the spin number always drops off a little. Arguably that spin would be considered to be a little bit low, but then what we see out on the golf course would perhaps contradict it. So I always pay attention to that number. We don’t want to see it too low. But again, people who watch the channel for a long time know that that always comes up on the low side. Then into 7 iron 152 carry. So we’re back again into that traditional loft. It’s where I would say my number would be that 150 area. Maybe even a little bit shorter than that. 145 to 150 is a number that I’d be happy with. Um 22.9 launch again a slightly sort of higher launching ball averaging just under 5,000 RPM of spin. That peak height again matching up with that launch angle super high landing at 48.8 means again coming into greens that is going absolutely nowhere. And then the interesting one for me was the the sort of five iron. This is where perhaps you’re looking at when the sort of swing speed starts to slow down a little. Do we get the carry distance that we require? Well, a 170 carry means if you work back from the 9 iron and the 7 iron, we’ve got some nice incremental jump off jump ups in terms of gapping. Um 18.7 launch with a five iron again is is on the high side, but again something that’s really going to work for most golfers. just under 4,000 revs of spin. Peak height, like I said, still high 87 and a launch a land angle of 43.4. So, what’s interesting is ball flight is on the higher side, but something that I would sort of prefer and again, but not spinning so that it’s sort of coming back on us, land angle is really good and coupled up all them numbers together, we’ve got a really good performing set of irons on our hands and that’s what Trackman tells us. Now, let’s get back on the course and see what else I managed to find about how these clubs perform. Not going to drift in. Staying out down that left hand side. Yet again, surprisingly enough, on the kind of longer side than I would have probably expected. The interesting thing is with these irons from the data is although they’re on the weaker or more traditional kind of loft, the ball fires off plenty far enough. And as you can see, uh I think we’re in around sort of 150, maybe 155 carry on a 7 iron, which is always a good barometer. That’s slightly further than I would have expected for a 31 degree iron. But what’s interesting is the ball flight is kind of launching high and that descent angle was really interesting. again coming down very steep. Put all those things together as I mentioned and uh it’s really replicating that kind of Trackman data out here on the fairways which is always good to see. So data wise another box ticked. The big question for me is and where this all changes and why these are a potential game changer, why these are a threat to these major brands is the price point. I just want to come back on that forged feel. Well, there’s a couple of shots that I’ve hit in and around the green just with an I, it’s a little bit of a bump and run, but again, just exceptional feedback into the hands. So, any lover of forge clubs, but people who’ve not quite found that in hollow bodied irons before, I can’t stress enough just how good these things feel. It’s nice again. Back to where we started. That wind cutting off the left. Oh, and a nice old wicked HOL bounce. So, the final thing or two things are the price point and the amount of customization that you can achieve with these irons. So, first of all, I’m going to quote a price that is around and about. So, for a full set of these irons, we’re looking in the region of 670. That’s for six irons. So, it makes them just over £100 per iron. And I think that puts it not quite half the price of its competitors, but certainly uh pretty much there. That’s huge. That’s why I said these are a potential disruptor. Brands like Tacomao, they’ve got a real challenger on their hands here with this Vice Club. So, from a price perspective, straight away you’re going to be drawn in. But then I’m questioning, well, what are the compromises I’m making? I’m looking at components. I’m looking at shafts. I’m looking at grips and obviously the build of the head. And there’s none whatsoever. And in fact, there’s an opportunity first of all to choose some very good standard shafts. But if you want to custom build your clubs, then that’s the other option which I absolutely loved. And we were able to choose something with a black shaft. There’s a graphite MMT shaft, 90 g stiff. We coupled it with a red grip and a little red fereral as well. And just built a club that is, you know, it’s mine. It’s my own bespoke design. And the options are absolutely endless in terms of what you want to do. And I love that. I love the fact that they’re giving you options, something that is a little bit different than what is out there right now. They’re made in Germany, shipped out, and again, find out all that kind of stuff from off the website. And I think there’s also the ability to go through a sort of online custom fit process where it’ll ask you certain questions and derive at the club type that you should be looking to buy. This is one of the sets of irons I hope to feature more. First time I’ve tried them and like I said, super impressed. I mean, for me, I grabbed them off the shelf purely based on looks, but then all these other things that you start to question, well, they’ve managed to answer them far better than I would have expected to. We’ve got data, we’ve got the looks, we’ve got the feel, we’ve got that customizability, and then you’ve got that price point as well. So, super impressed. Well done to the team at Vice. I’m glad I’ve tried them at long last and I hope to feature a little bit more of their products on the channel in the future. I’d love you to let me know. Have you tried the product? Um, are you tempted by them? What do you think of the price point and what you think of the way these things looks? Any feedback you can give me cuz it’ll basically encourage me or not to feature more of their product on the channel in terms of reviews because that’s the way I want this sort of the review process to go. I’ll be led by you what you want to see or when I feel like there’s a product that is a particular interest and worth featuring, then we’ll show it. And that certainly fits that bill. Right, as ever, thanks for watching. Black clouds are coming here at Hol. We’re going to wrap this one up and quickly get back into the van. And I’ll see you all very soon. And thanks for watching.

  1. Great review it would be nice to compare the 01 compared to 02, it’s refreshing to see vice saying anyone can play either really

  2. I have to say I am tempted to get a set of fitted Vice irons. Yu have convinced me they are the go to clubs..Thankyou….

  3. The problem I always think about dtc type clubs is resale value, especially if heavily customised. Not an issue if you keep them years, but if you switch a lot then poss not a great idea

  4. Watched a video with James Robbo getting a full fitting and they look really nice. The only fly in the ointment is not being able to try before you buy which may put the average golfer off if they don't know shaft length, lie angle, etc.
However they look and sound awesome. Great video, Andy 👍🏻

  5. You say they are close to traditional lofts. The Vice 7 iron is 1 degree stronger than my 6 iron, which at 30 degrees I consider a traditional loft. What is traditional loft these days?

  6. '…going back to more traditional lofts…'
    That is blatantly incorrect!
I appreciate that no one is perfect and mistakes are made BUT to say that the lofts are more traditional with a 7 iron at 31° reeks of either 'I can't be bothered to check my facts' or 'I can't be bothered to check my facts as I am too busy trying to get this video out and cash in'!
I have a set of Callaway X Forged from 2007 and they are 35°. The same clubs in 2015 and 2020 were 33°.
So explain to me how 31° is 'more traditional' unless you started your traditions yesterday!?!?!?

  7. Most of the specs are out of stock like the black heads and all of the Whiz graphite shaft options(on the US site). I wanted to order a set but will need to wait until everything is back in stock. I'm wondering if they are holding off due to tariffs.

  8. One reason I didn't order them was becasue it was 8-10 weeks to receive the clubs. They need to work on a solution to get clubs to customers faster.

  9. Great review Andy. I'm currently using the vice pro air golf ball and i'm super happy with them. I would love to try the irons.

  10. I really Like the Video thanks for sharing I'm liking the way that they look I'm going to see about getting a set here in the States. I Love Your Videos Sir I Think that you do a GREAT JOB Sir.

  11. That is a lovely set of irons. My one concern would be gapping. There is a 5 degree loft difference between 7i & 8i, between 8i & 9i and between 9i & PW. That is a bit more than I am comfortable with.

Launch is higher than I would want but that is very swing dependent and if they are a bit lower spinning, then a higher launch makes a lot of sense. Certainly with the peak height and descent angles from Andy's data there would be no issues stopping on greens unless you play courses with very firm greens such as you often find on links courses in the summer.

  12. Look great. Also love the fact you can get the iron set make-up you want- most DTC brands just offer 4-PW whereas I’d want 6- GW ideally.

  13. I play a 2 (17*),4 (22*) and 6 (28*) hybrids so I only need 7 -pw but all of these manufacturers only sell full sets.
They need to have more set options.

  14. Great stuff as always Andy.
Always good to wake up to one of your videos.
Please review any of the DTC irons you are able to
get your hands on please mate

  15. Very tempted moving from 10 year old Ping irons, need a forgiving set for a high handicap player. Being able to customise at that price point and have a new set for other brand secondhand hand prices will appeal to many. Postage to Australia is not cheap. The Vice Boost Starter Set also is amazing value and maybe a good item to reviews (very often sold out).

  16. There are now so many clubs to choose from! Would take a fair few fitting sessions from a fair few retailers to try each and every brand. Fun trying though.

  17. They do look great. And I like the idea of the custom build, a nice touch. Whether it would tempt me away from Ping I’m not sure, but if I were in the market for a new set I might be tempted.
