WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Columbia first year Alejandro Formosa shot a final-round 1-over-par 71 to finish runner-up at The Metropolis Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event, hosted by Columbia University and Metropolis Country Club, took place Monday and Tuesday.
Formosa was 2-over-par 212 for the tournament. Making his collegiate debut, the rookie from San Mateo, California, carded two birdies and three bogeys across Tuesday’s final round. The strong performance kept Formosa in contention for the win but North Dakota State’s Rylin Petry held on, winning the tournament at 1-over-par 211 with a final-round 72.
As a team, Columbia moved up one spot from its 36-hole standing to finish in a tie for fourth with Connecticut (+38). The Lions were 16 over as a team for the day, which was the third-best team round on what was a clear but breezy and gusty day at Metropolis Country Club.
“I think you come into your first tournament thinking you are going to blow the doors off the place, and that is just not what happened at this tournament for any team,” Columbia Director of Golf Rich Mueller said. “The golf course played beautifully – fair but challenging – and really just showcased what the MET section is truly about when it comes to championship golf.”
The Metropolis Intercollegiate was the first collegiate golf tournament Metropolis has hosted, and the first Columbia has hosted at Metropolis since announcing a new relationship with Columbia in 2023. Consistently ranked one of the top courses in the Metropolitan Area, Metropolis serves as a practice and training location for the Lions’ golf programs.
“It was a great experience for the club and hopefully for all of the college teams that came to Metropolis,” said Craig Thomas, who has served as Head Golf Professional at Metropolis since 2007. “I know the membership got behind it 100 percent. They were excited to show off their golf course and what a gem we have here at Metropolis.”
“Metropolis has been an incredible partner,” Mueller went on to say. “As we do at Columbia, we strive for excellence, and we found that with the MGA and Metropolis. I think we put on an extraordinary event and gave the kids a great experience. Once again, I just want to thank everyone who contributed in putting this event together. We’ve had an extraordinary time and hope to continue this tournament in the future.”
Columbia’s other top finishers in the event included first year Neil Kulkarni, who earned a top 15 at 9 over par. He battled through seven bogeys by carding four birdies for a final-round 73. On Monday, the rookie from Ashburn, Virginia, posted scores of 72 and 74.
Senior Darren Pang (+15) tied for 30th while senior George Rubelsky (+17) was tied for 39th.
Columbia returns to competition September 20-21 at The Goat, hosted by Navy. The tournament will be held at the Naval Academy Golf Club in Annapolis, Maryland.
