Charleston, W. Va. – After opening the 2025 fall schedule at home last week, the Wheeling University Women’s Golf team was back on the course Monday for Day 1 of the Golden Eagle Invitational, hosted by the University of Charleston. The Cardinals sit 18th in the field after 18 holes, shooting a combined 435 for the round and trailing West Liberty by 11 strokes. However, there was plenty of individual successes to go around, with one Cardinal cracking the top 10, while two others significantly dropped their scores from the season opening tournament.

The lone Cardinal to crack the top 50 on the day was senior Ella Keffer, who finished 49th in the field shooting an 82 (+11) in the round. She began her day on the back nine and after putting three strokes on her score at the start, she hit a birdie on hole 18 that gave her some momentum as she headed into the front nine. It was the first of two birdies in the round for Keffer who, after adding three more strokes to her score, was able to knock one of those away with a birdie on hole four. She would then find her consistency, hitting par on four straight holes and shooting +4 (38) on the front nine. She would add three more pars on the back nine, including back-to-back on holes 13 and 14, and shot +7 (44) to round out the back nine. For Keffer, she sits just outside the top 20 of her Mountain East Conference (MEC) competitors at the event and looks to make a push on day two of the event.

Finishing behind her was sophomore Brielle Milhoan, who put up a season-best 84 (+13) in her first round of play. Like Keffer, Milhoan would also shoot birdie on two holes in the round, one of the front nine and one on the back nine. Her most successful run came in the front nine, where she hit four pars and a birdie on hole four. It was a seven-stroke drop from her performance in round two of the Wheeling Invitational as she continues to grow throughout the season. However, the biggest drop came from sophomore Mallory Bozovich, who knocked 20 strokes off her score from the opening tournament, shooting 114 (+43) through 18 holes. She would bogie three times in the round, and was just one shot shy of her career-best, which she set last season at the West Liberty Invitational.

The final golfer for the Cardinals was sophomore Julia Daniels, who made her collegiate golf debut at the event. Daniels, who was a key contributor for the Wheeling Women’s Lacrosse team last season, would shoot a 155 (+84) in her first collegiate round of golf . She was consistent on both the front nine and back nine and looks to bounce back on the second day of the event.

The Wheeling University Women’s Golf team returns to action on day two of the Golden Eagle Invitational on Tuesday, September 9th, with tee times beginning at 9 AM.
