Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This YouTube channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!

I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.

I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!

On this channel I also make fun and entertaining golf content based on crazy and sometimes “gimmicky” golf clubs. I like to cut through the marketing hype about products and I like to give you the honest truth about golf equipment.

I, like many people watching this video, don’t love chipping off the green. I feel that there’s often times where you’ll fat it, thin it, and just not get it close enough. Often going with some like a sand wedge or a lob wedge can be dangerous and can cost a lot of shots. That’s why I don’t use it. However, sometimes I’ll use something like this, an eight iron. It’s a little bit safer. You play a little bit more of a bump and run shot. It’s harder to fat. It’s harder to thin. But even then, an eight iron is hard to predict. Sometimes it comes out with too much power. Certainly if you’ve got game improvement irons. It’s why often I pull out the magic stick, the flat wand, the putter off the green. It’s my secret weapon. If I couldn’t put off the green, I would shoot 10 to 12 shots worse than what I do every round. This is my secret weapon. However, I know a lot of people don’t like using putter off the green. They find it hard to gauge. So then there’s one final option which brings everything we’ve just talked about into one golf club. It’s the length of a putter. It’s the langle of a putter. It’s the head shape of a hybrid. It’s the loft of an eight iron. But it’s also made by the number one putting company in the world, Odyssey. They brought out this brand new chipper, the Odyssey chipper. And I’ll be honest, for the first time ever, they’ve actually made chippers look cool. And that’s not easy to do. That’s really not easy to do. The head is really, really heavy. It’s got a white hot insert, which is going to give that really nice soft feel. It’s got three alignment lines on the back. I love this kind of matte black finish with a little bit of chrome on there. And as I said, if I sit this behind the golf ball, and I promise you right now, I’ve not hit a single shot with this club. Not one. We’re going to go for the red flag. I feel like it’s basically just using a putter with loft. And you know, the biggest thing for me, and it’s hard to portray on video, is how beautifully heavy the head is. Like, it’s double, might be a bit exaggeration. It’s considerably heavier than a putter head. I just feel like all I need to do here is literally move my arms, pick a point, and there’s no way I can fat or thin or douff this shot. I mean, how no wonder they get called cheating sticks cuz that honestly felt like cheating. And even like holding it, I could hold it. I could hold it like my putter grip normally. I could claw it. You could hold it like a putter grip if you want to. I suppose you can hold it however you normally want to. Doesn’t really matter. I’m I’m kind of feeling quite a traditional putter grip here. Now I thin that one. That was interesting actually. Maybe you can still duff a chipper. Don’t thin it, Rick. That was a silly shot. That was really good that one. And that nearly went in. It’s interesting. And the one thing I’m slightly concerned about and I need to I’m going to hit these next few think about this. Slightly concerned from from probably scar tissue of hitting the ground with the club because the hitting the ground with the club for me if I’m using a stand wedge or a log wedge etc can often result in a fat shot. It shouldn’t do with this. I need to trust it. Allow the bottom of the club to hit the ground. Still a little bit skinny. It’s a great result. I mean look at the three that I’ve hit. Well, those results are unbelievable. Now, this isn’t the first time a bigname brand has brought out a chipper recently. If you remember, not that long ago, Ping brought out the chipper, the C H I P R chipper. And that was more like a almost like an iron. It was almost like they were making a a chipper for a better player. This feels more like a chipper for the mass market. If you need help, grab this. And you know I’m amazed about the price. Odyssey aren’t known for making super super cheap golf clubs or putters. They can often range into 300400. This I think is a very reasonable price. £129. I think that’s very very reasonable for this club. I mean this this is basically a lifesaver. Could save someone’s golf career. Please in the comments don’t say mine. Right. Come on. Hit the ground. Trust it. That’s better. Just needs to hit that ground just so I can trust that it’s not going to dig in. I’m going to chip one of these in. Come on. Try out some really tough lies as well. What’s interesting here, what I’m actually noticing is it does have a little bit of check. Like when it lands on the ground, it’s not just straight out rolling. It just has a little bit of grab. And the other thing that’s very interesting, even though yes, my short to long dispersion has been a little bit off. It’s the first time I’ve used this club, my right to left dispersion has been very, very good. Like, it’s very difficult to hit massively offline, which I can definitely do with a a wedge in my hand. I can end up hitting it way offline. This just feels like as long as you get the speed right, the line’s always going to be good. Now, truth be told, I doubt that a little bit. It’s bang on line. It’s g me a chance to get up and down. I like it. I like it a lot. Let’s try it out of the rough because this is where Odyssey have mentioned. They tried to make it much more like a hybrid shape to help with that real kind of thicker grass. A bit of a chipper’s nightmare. A rough lie with not loads of green to work with where I can’t use putter. Like I’m not allowed to use it from here cuz it’s not going to work. I really need a little bit of loft, but I need a club that’s going to help me. I’m going to go for this tight pin first, which is a horrible little pin. But what I’m hoping for is this Odyssey chipper is going to do all the work for me. I’m just going to try and land it on the front of the green. Yeah, it’s come out a bit strong. I didn’t play that bad. I didn’t play that bad at all. I suppose 37 degrees of loft, which is what this club has, it is like an eight iron. So, it is going to be a little bit tricky to hit this almost soft enough. I should try and land it just just off the green this time. Again, really horrible thick lie. I mean, that’s pretty good. I think it can be learned. I think someone who uses this club a lot could start to figure out how hard to hit it, how soft to hit it off different situations. Let’s go for this third one. This is a horrible, horrible lie. I mean, it’s proper sat down. The grass is wet. I’ve got no real green to work with. Again, someone who struggles with chipping will be thinking, I’m gonna fat this. I’m gonna thin this. Oh, it just hit the fringe. Hit the hole. You know what? That was actually really unlucky. That got a little fringe boost off the front of the green there. But in all seriousness, someone who wants to use this club, who is so bad at chipping, who literally just fats it and thins it almost every time, I’m going to I’m going to hit some shots now. I’m going to purposely try and fat it purposely. Almost thin it, almost yip it a little bit. I’m going to go to the long flag this time and let’s see what the results actually look like. I’m I’m almost going to purposely fat this one. I’m going to try and hit behind the golf ball on purpose. I’m going to just use real wristy action. Stop. Six out of 10. Like with a wedge, I don’t think I would have gone even onto the front of the green. This one I’m almost going to try and like almost top it a little bit. I lit I’d literally top that. I mean, that’s a result of a good shot. Like, you take that. Trying to think what else I can do. I’m going to try and just literally shove this into the ground. And it’s too hard. Granted, hit the flag. It has come out too hard, but you get the picture. Like I took a massive big divot there, yet it’s still kind of almost worked to some degree. And some people watching this might go, I’d take that. I take that every day cuz what I’m doing at the moment is way worse than that. If that’s the case, I think this could definitely be a club to try. I think design-wise, it’s spectacular. Looks wise, it’s superb. Weight wise, concept, fantastic, price, superb. If you struggle, give it a go. And please don’t put in the comments, Rick, you should be using this. I know I should be using it, but my pride will never let me use one. Okay, ever. Unless I chit this one in. That’s If that goes in, it’ll go in my bag forever. Oh, what a shame. Guys, thanks for watching. Stay tuned. Lots more to come. We’ll see you next time.

  1. Rick has very active legs when chipping. Unnecessary weight shift. If he just put more weight on the front leg and kept it there chipping and putting and even pitching. He is changing his low point, hence the fat and thin that he is scared of.

  2. PW is such a good around the green club, so is putter when you’re on the approach. It’s very rare that I use anything other than those two.

  3. Please make chest putters and chippers illegal, at least for golfers under 70

  4. I find its limited to one shot, you can get much spin or check or height, so I prefer the flexibility of a wedge. However on some lies these are awesome and when you just not on your game they can really help so its in my bag for terrible lies and bump and runs. I don't carry a 60% so this takes that spot.

  5. I’ve pre ordered one and had it delivered on day 1. Straight into bag. I’m beginning the golf and it helps a lot as I struggle with short game

  6. Bump and runs are great shots to do more than loft unless you have a bunker in front of green.

  7. Hi Rick, just watched the video, and found it interesting, but I would never use anything like that, I prefer to use a gap wedge pitching wedge or even a 3/5 wood, and I am 72 now, and always used those apart from the 3/5 woods they came later

  8. I tried a Square Strike chipper once and enjoyed it. It had 46° of loft, which really helped. Maybe Odyssey should make a few other loft options

  9. This product wouldn't be going in my bag, but a very good friend of mine would absolutely benefit. He's been given other chippers in the past and has had little success. He uses his putter from 30' off the green and in situations that he really shouldn't. Here's the real question. Would Rick put this club in his bag? I'm sure the answer is no, but maybe

  10. I am a 20 handicap and love my 37° chipper. I even use it out of sand traps. The best thing is the consistency to give me a chance for par.

  11. When winter arrives, the grass starts to die back, the chipper is gonna pay for itself around the greens off the tight muddy lies

  12. What a joke – the "CHIPPER". It may work once-in-a-while for mediocre golfers looking for a quick fix to get on the green, but the reality is you can perfect any shot with the clubs in your bag. If the ball is within 10 feet, use your 8 iron and line up the ball with your left foot keeping your arms stiff and sweep the ball towards the target (the slight loft will get it off the higher grass and on the green where it will roll into the cup), and if the ball is beyond 10 feet then use varying irons starting with your Sand and working with longer irons like the Gap/All then Pitching to reach the green.

  13. This is the perfect example of a gimmick club. Many people who struggle or don't have the time to practice will buy it looking for a quick fix. I don't see it being consistent enough in all the types of roughs around greens to warrant putting it in the bag. Practice with your wedges and use more toe down with a few irons and you will get very comfortable around the greens.

  14. Got a cleveland chipper last year and cut easily 3-4 shots off my rounds. It also gave me more confidence with my wedge chipping. Love it!

  15. I thought only 1 club was allowed to have the alinement lines , that being the putter. So illegal or legal. I have a chipper and can use it close, in a bunker, and from 50 yards fairly accurately.

  16. Clubs like this shouldn't be allowed in my opinion …… You suffer from the chipping YIPS on tight surfaces, deal with it. Work on your technique, it ain't that farking hard.

  17. I might appreciate one on those bare winter lies. I usually bump a hybrid if things are sketchy, but the lie and length are not ideal, and it's only 25 deg.

  18. Chippers are great, I used to use one, but they lack versatility, taking up space in the bad. I use a 7 hybrid for chipping now, does the same job, but can also be used for approaches from 140 yards or so

  19. Fascinating..

Rick saying all the right things of why you should use a chipper. Way more forgiving etc.

Rick also putting out videos regularly about how bad his short game is. Exactly the type player who could benefit from such a club.

Despite all this, Rick: “I won’t use one!!”. Just stupid. Give it a try and see if it works.

Personally I would love to try (3hcp). Short game has been a strength for many years but a bit of a struggle now. My only concern is the loft.. 37 degrees is an 8/9 iron. Would prefer between 40/45 degrees but would still be worth a try.

  20. Geesh. Valuegolf has been making chippers for years. I own one that I bought 5 years ago. I don't use it anymore now that I've discovered toe-down chipping with my 7 iron, thanks to Matty from Golf Sidekick. Way to reinvent the wheel, Odyssey! How funny that Rick never heard of this club because he doesn't pay attention to any other company besides the big boys.

  21. Perhaps Odyssey should bring out another version of this chipper in a higher loft, somewhere between 54° and 64°, for golfers who want a chipper but want one with which their shots stop quickly. Something like that could probably replace lob wedges in some golfers' bags.

  22. Got a ben sayers chipper,it ain’t pretty but it works when I’m struggling around the greens

  23. It's a heavy headed 8 iron….

Literally take a shit 8 iron, put tungsten weights on the back of it, maybe re-grip it, and you just made the same thing.

  24. it's basically an Odessey Tank, they have had them for years. I played one for like a year and the way you blew it by the cup is exactly how it was for me. let's face it, around most greens (especially elevated ones) You will be in the rough the so the shots that Rick was blowing by the hole is basically what that chipper does. I got rid of it and got a Cleveland smart sole chipper. Such a better product and has saved me countless strokes with much better control.
