Sept. 6 (UPI) — President Donald Trump announced plans to host the Group of 20 nations’ summit next year at his Trump National Doral golf course near Miami, where he attempted to conduct the event when he was first president.
The event will take place Dec. 14 and 15, 2025, Trump said Friday from the Oval Office of the White House.
“We will have the honor of hosting the G20 summit right here in America for the first time here in nearly 20 years,” Trump said as he signed executive orders and took questions from reporters for 1 1/2 hours. “Everybody wants it, because it’s right next to the airport, it’s the best location. Beautiful everything.”
Trump wanted the G7 summit at his property in 2020, but the idea was dropped after criticism, including ethical concerns. The G7 ended up taking place virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The last in-person summit hosted by the U.S. was in Pittsburgh in 2009.
Trump said the 2026 event will be “at cost” for the resort from the State Department or a foreign government.
“We’re doing a deal where it’s not going to be money,” Trump said. “There’s no money in it. I just want it to go well.”
This year’s gathering of leaders will take place in November in South Africa, but Trump said Vice President JD Vance will attend in his place. Trump has been at odds with the country over the treatment of White farmers.
Host nations are rotated, with a host president selected every year. Trump attended G20 summits in Hamburg, Germany, in 2017; Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2018; and Osaka, Japan, in 2019.
The first summit was in December 1999 in Berlin, Germany.
The G20 comprises countries from the European Union, African Union and other world powers, including China and Russia. The smaller G-7 includes the U.S., Canada, Japan and four European nations: Britain, France, Germany, Italy.
The G-20 accounts for about 85% of the world’s gross domestic product and more than 75% of global trade, according to the G20 website.
On Wednesday at the White House, he invited Poland’s President Karol Narocki to the summit.
An administration official told CBS News the guest list will be smaller than recent G20 summits because the U.S. “will be taking a back-to-basics approach to its host year, streamlining the summit and related workstreams, and aligning the agenda with the G20’s founding goals of economic growth and financial stability.”
He said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will organize the summit’s agenda, and National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett will be the point person.
“Miami is honored to host the G20 summit, marking a historic moment for both Miami and the nation,” Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who was with Trump at the announcement, said in a statement to Politico after the announcement. “It reinforces Miami’s role on the international stage when events like the G20, the America Business Forum and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, want to call Miami home.”
It will host the PGA Tour’s Miami Championship next year, with the LIV golf taking place there in April. LIV represents the Roman number 54, which is the number of holes played at the events.
Contestants for the 63rd Miss University beauty pageant in 2015 stayed on the property. The event was at Florida International University’s FIU Arena.
Trump purchased the resort in 2012 for $150 million. Trump National Doral includes four golf courses, a 48,000-square-foot spa, a pool with a 125-foot slide and a ballroom that is more than 24,000 square feet.
“Hard at work on our Doral 2.0 project,” Mickael Damelincourt, the property’s managing director, posted on X on Thursday, a day before Trump’s announcement. “We are taking @TrumpDoral to a level you could only dream of.”
