BUIES CREEK, N.C. – For the second-straight year, Campbell will open its men’s golf schedule Sunday at the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate, hosted by Coastal Carolina at Grande Dunes Resort Club.
However, for the first time since the spring of 1990, a different head coach will lead the Fighting Camels into competition. Matt Moot, a 2011 Campbell graduate who spent seven seasons – the last two as associate head coach – will lead his squad for the first time as head coach of the program.
After spending 35 years at the helm of the men’s program, John Crooks assumed Director of Golf responsibilities in July while remaining as head coach of the Campbell women’s program.
Moot will start a lineup that includes three players who led the Camels to a runner-up finish in last year’s event. Juniors Erik Johansson and Joachim Larsen Tegner, and sophomore Benjamin Killingstad will be joined by freshmen William Sundborn and Adrian Bergqvist in the season-opening event.
The 16-team field includes Clemson of the ACC and Big Ten member Maryland, plus host Coastal Carolina, as well as Campbell’s CAA rival Elon and regional rival East Carolina.
The 54-hole event continues through Tuesday. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
In last year’s tournament, Henric Bjelke and Joachim Larsen Tegner tied for eighth individually and Campbell finished as runner-up in the team standings. The Camels finished at 18-under par (280-285-281—846), just three strokes shy of Santa Clara (279-284-280—843) on the final team leader board. Bjelke (69-71-71—211) and Larsen Tegner (71-69-71—211) completed the event at 5-under par. Erik Johansson (69-75-69—213) finished in a tie for 16th at 3-under. Benjamin Killingstad (71-70-75—216) tied for 27th in his first collegiate event.

Grande Dunes has been ranked among “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” by Golf Digest and the Roger Rulewich design is one of Myrtle Beach’s most sought-after tee times. Sweeping fairways, large greens and, of course, those stunning Intracoastal Waterway views have come to define the popular layout. On a course full of breathtaking views, the par 3 14th stands out. Playing from an elevated tee box to a green that resides along the Intracoastal Waterway, No. 14 is on the short list of the best par 3s in all of South Carolina golf. Holes 8, 9, 10 and 15 also bring the waterway into play.
The Coach: After spending seven seasons as assistant and associate head coach, Matt Moot is in his first year as head coach at his alma mater. During his playing career (2007-11) at Campbell, Moot compiled 11 top-10 individual finishes and was a two-time Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.
