the simple stuff, low lowhanging fruit here. If you’re ever wondering why a long iron or something or a mid iron is not getting airborne as much as you want it to get, it’s not climbing on you, you know. Hey, listen. Let’s just talk about ball position and width of stance. Okay, width of stance. This is pretty cool. You know, guys on the tour, they stay very consistent with their width of stance and ball position. And we have a simple way that you can do that, you know. So, Dad, if you watch us, Dad would put up an alignment rod on my shoulders like this. We’d put two dots right here on on my shoulder width, outside of the shoulders, and then we put one at the midpoint. So, all my pros do this. I got, you know, a couple guys on tour right now that are doing exactly this every week. Right here, three dots, shoulders, midpoint. Well, check this out. You put that on the ground and all of a sudden I see the width of my shoulders wedges. We’re being this is approximately, you know, you can adjust according to the shot you’re hitting, but give you give you like the approximate of where you ground zero where we should typically be. Okay. Outsides of the feet align with the outsides of the shoulders for wedges. Middle of my feet to the outsides of my shoulders for irons. Insides of my feet to the outsides of my shoulders for woods. Let’s let’s let’s let’s think about why. The narrower my stance gets, the more Vshape my swing gets. Okay, I get narrower. I’m going to create a better angle of attack. little steeper angle of attack with a high lofted club, that’s necessary. Okay. If I go real wide and now this is a U-shaped bottom of the swing and I have that ball forward where I play it with a driver. Well, and I have and I hit that with a wedge, I got a, you know, it’s 56° going like this, I’m just going the ball’s going to ride up the face and go up in the air like this. Not and not only that, I probably won’t make good contact often. and it might hit the ground before the ball, might hit the ball itself. But striking down on top of the golf ball, guys, is two things in your setup. It’s width of your stance and it’s having the ball position directly underneath the top of your pendulum, which is your sternum. Okay? So, that midpoint that we came up with, ball position, unless it’s a specialty shot where you’re really trying to go underneath a tree or you’re hitting a bump and run on the green side, we’re not putting the ball in the back half of our stance, guys. You put the ball in the back half of your stance, the natural path of your swing is so in to out. And not only that, it’s where the pendulum would be swinging down extreme. So down and right. Well, if I need the ball to go in this direction, I’m going to be forced to back up and flip that thing to get it online. So, you’re putting yourself in jail with not knowing the right ball position for the club. You have wedges, woods, and everything in between. And I’m telling you right now, I’ve heard Butch Herman say this, and I’ve even told my players, you you almost could take every iron and put it underneath the logo on your shirt, and you’d be just fine. And the funny thing about that is, guess what? Those of you who toss it and go, “God, I would just never hit my wedges low like that. I wouldn’t never compress it.” No, no, no, no, no. Hit enough balls right here, guess what? You end up doing more there. Hit enough balls back there, you’re requiring yourself to go like this. Okay. So, that’s really important. Ball position ranges from the center of your body to your lead shoulder. Okay. The more up I move the ball, the more the club levels out, and even at by the time it gets up here, almost swings a little up. Right now, driver, wider stance, more U-shaped bottom of the swing. Ball forward ahead of the top of my pendulum. You’re not hitting up in your swing. You’re not hitting up in your swing. Your setup is hitting up for you. Okay? My best drivers at the golf ball feel like even sometimes they’re almost hitting down through it, hitting more level through the golf ball. But the problem is if you’ve been the guy who’s been told, “I got to hit up on the driver. I got to hit up on the driver.” And you have this wide of a stance and you’re playing it off your left heel like everybody else tells you in the world. Play it off your left heel with with what? With what width of stance? With this width of stance? With with this width of stance? Left heel here is right here where I’d be playing my eight iron. But if I get the right width of stance according to my shoulders, well, now left heel is correct on my left shoulder. That’s where my arm can extend and the club can actually have the loft it needs with a driver to get the ball airborne and also buy it the time to square up. Okay, so real simply put, we have a little rule here for width of stance. We have ball position, you know, moving up gradually. I mean, the way I really look at it is, you know, wedge, 9 iron, 8 iron, 7 iron, 6 iron, 5 iron, you know, just all the way up to the lead shoulder. And, you know, believe it or not, just those simple tweaks in width of stance and ball position, you know, if I want to hit it over the tree with Jimmy here, and we’re trying to get a seven iron up and over these trees right here behind Kevin. I mean, listen, my normal flight with a seven would be right in the middle of those trees, okay? Probably like just top two/ird right there. To get it airborne, you know what I do? I’d widen it a little bit. I get that ball a little more forward and guess what? That would elevate that thing right over the trees. So, you know, just knowing those rules are huge for you guys in the game of golf. You got to get over a bunker, something like that. It’s downwind. You want the ball to land a little softer, little wider, move the ball a little forward. Okay. Good stuff. Helps simplify it for sure because there's tons of conflicting info out there.
such solid and simple thoughts that can do amazing things for your game ….
wow
This resonates so well. I've hit the most flighted wedgeshots with ball 1,5 ball inside left heel with a narrow wedge stance.
My golf coach told me to stop watching all the “teachers” on youtube and follow one and this channel is the only one I watch and learn from other than Dan Grieves. Maybe one day I could get a lesson from you.
Tip has really helped a lot, especially with Driver setup
Every day's a school day, but today I learned a lot ………………….. thanks Adam.
Hi Adam, just a simple question, but to hit a draw is a reasonable thought is to swing to the right like first base or right field? Any vids on this?
I agree with the setup part. Moving the ball forward is tough for most players. A huge number, probably the vast majority, of amateur players have the inability to recenter and shift to the lead side enough to hit an iron forward in their stance. Mainly because they cannot physically move the way the shot requires.
Never thought of doing something like that. It’s so simple yet so effective
Today it was realy super good advice,,,thanks man
Looks like Adam made it to Foxwoods by looking at the flag in the background. Thanks for the awesome videos you make!
Oh no, you've resorted to the "it's like cheating" YouTube golf video tag line.
Wow! Why have I never seen any of these YouTube influencers ever talk about this in this way.
Do you do 1-2-1 lessons? I want to fly over from Scotland and spend a week with physical lessons. I’ve struggled for years and years, despite getting lessons. Two of your videos have dropped my handicap by 3, I really want to come over to get lessons from you.
Great lesson. Clear, concise.
Thanks
Great, essential, as always
Couldn't agree more. Basing ball position off the torso makes so much more sense. Great vid! I love that alignment stick reference.
Love the videos with individual players and their swing faults. But these more generalized videos are 💰. Would love to see more videos like this!
wow
Brilliant!
What an amazing video!
Preaching to the choir!!! 🤙👍
This is genius.
