we’re here now Jung-hoo, how’s San Francisco? life there? yeah the city is like… not too complicated not too much traffic just… it feels perfect then for this city, San Francisco, if you were to introduce to our MLB fans some of its charm, what would it be? firstly, the airport is very close to downtown wow that’s nice and also the weather isn’t too hot it’s summer now but it’s not hot, it feels great lots of tourist attractions too and there are tons of great restaurants – good restaurants
– oh, nice San Francisco and yesterday, we went there, to… 30…39? Pier? yeah yeah the sea lions there! why do they all crowd together like that? those… sea lions? yeah do you go there often these days? last year, while rehabbing, I had nothing to do, so I went but this year, I’ve been too busy so I couldn’t go then Jung-hoo, these days, do you have any superstitions or routines? honestly, I don’t really have superstitions my routine is just when I show up at the ballpark, I go through the same workout schedule I always do and get ready for the game that’s my routine I just come to the stadium, hot tub, cold tub go back and forth if something feels bad, I get treatment then I lift weights and since I had surgery, I also do rehab then head to the cage take some swings then when team practice starts, I go out and hit again or sometimes I just finish all my batting in the cage so no outdoor BP? yeah, but so sometimes I just wrap up BP in the cage then come back and get ready for the game the reason I asked is, back in the day… the player who just entered the Hall of Fame, Ichiro Suzuki back in the day… I heard he always ate curry I was curious about that whether it’s true or not like, MLB should’ve confirmed it once whether he really ate curry or not they say it was his daily routine really? I heard that too – you did?
– really? yeah so that was part of his routine too whether three meals a day or two meals a day I don’t know exactly but heard he eats curry every single gameday yes, I heard that too so I was wondering if our Jung-hoo has any routine like that I was curious my mom packs me a lunch… for home games, my mom packs me a lunch I eat that then get ready for the game when it’s an away game, I just… eat a hamburger hamburger… wow quesadilla! I just eat that then play the game so then, eating the lunch your mom packs every day at home— that’s your routine? yes and your wife is a great cook too yes so these days, outside of baseball, do you have any hobbies you enjoy? honestly, not really no? yeah, because here the schedule is already tough and even on off-days, since it’s been a while since I had one, I don’t feel like going out much right or sometimes I just rest on road trips so when I go on road I’ll walk around a bit just to check it out that’s pretty much it yeah, in the KBO, there’s a rest day every Monday and only 144 games so it’s a bit easier but in the majors, 162 games with so much travel and constant flights that must be really tough right then when you go east, the time difference yeah, 3 hours yes so this year, playing full time, that’s been tough, right? yeah, especially sleeping when we go east suddenly it feels like time is faster and also, the last game of a series is usually a day game so… when it’s a 12pm game in the east, it’s 9am here so then, you wake up super early and it feels like waking up at dawn I’m still getting used to that but this year at least, since he’s playing full time, he should be adapting better but Jung-hoo Lee, it must be tough for you that’s what I think Nippert! right now in MLB, for pitchers, what was the hardest part? well, as you know, first off, when you go to bat, they’re all pitchers you’ve seen for the first time that’s tough and even though it’s the first time facing them, still, their velocity is high their breaking balls are sharp and even with scouting reports, when I step into the box, the break, the movement, the four-seam’s life, it all feels different so those things… facing new pitchers that’s tough but also, compared to Korea, pitchers here are all tall… yeah taller… yes when I was hitting in Korea, the tallest pitcher I faced was Nippert… even then, it felt like he was throwing right in my face but here, everyone feels that way right yeah and the tempo’s really fast yeah the tempo’s super fast but I think that fast tempo’s actually good since it’s not dragged out but rather than just tempo they’re all tall and their pitching form’s kind of wild too so like, when you watch major league pitchers the ball Korean pitchers they throw it kind of clean and pretty like a neat throw but their form is more like how should I put it… scaring the batter! yeah exactly even their form looks intimidating and when they throw it, it’s like they crush the ball in their grip yeah, totally with that that grip strength do you remember what it was like facing Nippert? do you remember that? of course I do it was right after I graduated high school first year as a pro I faced him and he was already the MVP the year before… and I had to face him head-to-head man, seriously… it felt like the ball was coming down from the second floor from way up there but I think wasn’t that 2018? 2017! with KT… nah, 2017! that was 2017? when you were still with Doosan ah, right, 2017 2017, 2018! back when you were “Ninunim”! Ninunim! Doosan’s Ninunim! wow… I was so shocked but you know, when you watch Jung-hoo his swing is so clean yeah, it’s really good the line of his swing is beautiful and for underhand pitchers, he’s a tough type to face ah… no, not really Jung-hoo’s confidence is just on another level yeah other players, if I pressure them fast they get like “ahh…” “that was rough” but Jung-hoo just keeps going “yeah” “I’m ready” seriously not long ago when we played the Dodgers and met our guy Kim Hye-sung when you saw Hye-sung at second base what did you guys talk about? ah, so at that moment I hit Yamamoto’s pitch got a double and ended up on second (Jung-Hoo hit double against Yamamoto) and then their pitching coach came out to give them a little hit-time break went up to the mound to kill the momentum so the game paused for a bit and Hye-sung usually in America when the pitching coach comes out all the infielders go up too, right? yeah, yeah but Hye-sung didn’t go (usually players gather like this) (Hye-Seong reached to Jung Hoo) he stayed put so we had a moment and just chatted a bit was it like talking about some good food in LA’s Koreatown? like something like that? or what kind of stuff? we were joking like, “why does his forkball drop so much” that forkball, man…! I thought it was a fastball and swung but just barely hit it so I kind of joked about it we were laughing over that (good old friends chatting) when you meet someone that close to you but it’s overseas and for work, after a long time apart what does that feel like? first, with Hye-sung I’ve never worn another team’s uniform never played for anyone else so… me and Hye-sung we’ve been on the same team since high school youth national team played together all that time seven years in pro ball together and also on the national team we’re still teammates there too so facing him in a different uniform like this was the first time ever and it felt kind of strange same with Ha-seong hyung too so in a way, would you say Hye-sung’s kind of a friendly rival? nah, with me and Hye-sung it’s more like I just want both of us to keep moving up together not like I think of him as a rival or anything okay okay, got it but San Francisco’s good, right? yeah, the players here are all great and even though I came in as a total outsider they treated me like I’d been here all along really made me comfortable from the start last year too, like the guys told me I didn’t have to do rookie stuff but I said no, I wanted to so last year I was carrying beers around just like a rookie I asked them to treat me like one and doing that actually brought me closer to everyone and like we’d go to Korean restaurants together so, in San Francisco is there a good Korean restaurant? here… here… well… there’s this one place with great braised short ribs there used to be a **Galbi place too, right? yeah, I think that’s gone now oh really? yeah, they changed the name there’s another Korean BBQ place but that **Galbi spot isn’t around anymore so then I… I was always curious about this when you came to the Majors were there any pitchers where… you know when you faced aces where you really felt a wall like, “man, this is on another level” the hardest pitcher to hit the type where you thought, “I’ve never seen this before” is or are there pitchers like that? someone you’d never seen in KBO like “whoa…” “this is unbelievable” unbelievable, huh? like back in the day, when I saw Randy Johnson throw I was shocked ah… that kind of “first time” shock? yeah, like that shock! as everyone knows those top pitchers each of them has something special that’s just theirs what amazed me the most was how from certain arm angles they can throw with that velocity and that kind of movement stuff like that of course right now every pitcher is really good but what I feel the strongest is those well-known pitchers they’re all in a class of their own and everyone knows they’re top tier that’s just another level completely but like… even the middle relievers that come in the setup guys whoever it is they’re all throwing close to 100 mph… yeah, like… with crazy movement on their pitches or like their changeup is just insane like in Miami there’s that pitcher Cabrera – Cabrera
– yeah, that guy his changeup comes in at 94, 95 mph at first I fouled one off then I looked up at the scoreboard like “that was a two-seamer?” yeah, a changeup, and I was just like yes… “whoa, what is this place?” that’s how it felt for me, back in the day watching Randy Johnson and Pedro Martínez as a pitcher myself seeing them up close I was like, “man… are these guys even human like us?” that’s how unreal they seemed they were a whole different kind of pitcher and honestly here every pitcher feels like that, brand new or what about hitters? was there anyone you thought, “wow, this guy can really hit”? who was that hitter? Ohtani… of course, Ohtani Judge yeah, Judge is great and Arizona’s Ketel Marte too he’s incredible all those great hitters like that Harper Schwarber even watching from the outfield it’s just… their swings are just so beautiful to watch okay then, here’s what I’m curious about these days back in my day when we played games the opposing team would come in, or even during our own batting practice when Mark McGwire stepped up Big Mac! watching him in BP I’d never seen anyone hit like that the ball just flew like a golf ball like, once, twice three times I saw it happen and thought “wow, this guy’s unreal…” so who’s the best BP hitter you’ve seen? the one with the biggest punch on our team? or anyone out of everyone you’ve seen so far someone who just blew you away? honestly… all of them! literally every player here oh really? yeah just just, like… in batting practice normally guys don’t try to pull everything for homers yeah, usually at first they all hit to the opposite field so BP is mostly oppo hitting but even going opposite field they clear the fences so casually in Korea, honestly hitting to the opposite field in BP like that off soft toss pitches it’s not easy to drive those for home runs but these guys do it effortlessly… just like that that’s the difference BP here is on another level and me personally I really like Chapman on the Giants he’s such a great defender too out of all the third basemen I’ve seen honestly he’s the best I’ve ever watched in my life for sure oh really? yeah, like watching a shortstop playing third so then what Jae-gyun Hwang, or… so who else is there at third? which third basemen have you played with? oh, well… a lot… there are a lot actually but out of them, still Matt Chapman? yeah, Chapman’s the best who was Kiwoom’s third baseman again? Sung-moon hyung! Sung-moon Song (no way…) oh then was Sung-moon not really a third baseman? (BK’s just teasing) (as expected…) nah, that’s not what I mean it’s just that between Korea and the U.S., the difference is in Korea, infielders usually play a little more up close on defense that’s kind of the style like, with the dirt and the grass line here where the dirt ends American infielders since the balls are hit so much harder the third baseman even when he’s standing way up near the grass even all the way over there he still covers a huge range he scoops up rockets hit in front of him and then makes running throws really like a shortstop playing third base like right now in San Francisco they’ve got Matt Chapman, sure but back when I was in Arizona Matt Williams was the manager and as a third baseman he was that caliber thirty-something homers a year always hit over 30 homers a season a total All-Star level guy he’s our third base coach now right yeah and infield defense coach too and the vibe is really similar back then and now, like with Chapman so Ichiro just got inducted into the Hall of Fame you’ve always said you grew up watching him, right? yeah so now, about that moment do you have any words of congratulations? me, really? why not, why not, why not I mean, you could be a future Hall of Famer yourself one day it’s just he was the first Asian player ever and on top of that seeing him give that whole speech in English was so inspiring and for me when I first started baseball my dad said he’d let me hit lefty and the very first video he showed me was Ichiro’s highlights so I grew up watching him and when I was a kid I just thought his plays looked cool but now that I’m older it’s his attitude toward baseball and his professionalism that make me admire him even more so seeing him make it all the way to the Hall of Fame I just thought it was incredible yeah, even as a person he’s amazing Jung-hoo, it was great meeting you today thanks for making the trip no, no, not at all anyway, stay healthy and keep it up I’ll see you again soon yeah alright? thank you good work today yeah, you did great thanks everyone you must still be jetlagged uh… stay healthy! yes! got it! fighting! it’s like hard to talk to him but I know I’m a foreign player in Korea but like, he’s doing like amazing things everyone’s really proud of him if he’s ever, like, tired just, like, keep going he’s doing great things and he’s gonna be a great player you can do it! you can do it! you can do it! this interview’s fun, huh? (laughs all around) enjoy it, enjoy it time flies see you next time take care! good job! okay~!

  3. Jung Hoo is the reason I started watching baseball again and started attending games! Giants fans love Jung Hoo and the stadium just absolutely lights up when he's up to bat or does his thing in the outfield 🧡

  4. 아프지만 않으면 노력과 실력이 있는 선수니 결국엔 적응해서 성공할 선수라 생각합니다. 화이팅!
