WESTPORT, CT — A 41-year-old Bronx, New York man was arrested last week on burglary and larceny charges in connection with the theft of more than $12,000 worth of golf equipment from the pro shop at Westport’s Longshore Golf Course in 2024, according to authorities.
Matthew Berman surrendered to Westport police on Aug. 21 and was charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree larceny, and second-degree criminal mischief in connection with the Sept. 7 break-in at the shop off Compo Road South.
According to Westport police, golf course staff discovered the burglary on the morning of the 7th, after finding a side door to the shop had been forced open.
“Numerous golf clubs and golf bags were reported to have been stolen by the perpetrator(s) with an estimated total value of approximately $12,498.70,” wrote Lt. Anthony Prezioso in a statement. “Through investigation, Matthew Berman was developed as a possible suspect after he was arrested by New York authorities for similar golf pro shop burglaries that had been committed within their state.”
Westport detectives were able to link evidence of the crime back to Berman, which led to the department obtaining a warrant for his arrest.
Berman was released after posting bond on bail of $25,000, and he is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Oct. 6.
