The “towel drill” when done under both arms, helps golfers develop a more connected and controlled swing by promoting proper arm positioning and grip consistency. By keeping a towel tucked under both armpits during practice swings, golfers learn to maintain a more connected feeling between their arms and body, preventing them from disconnecting and lifting their arms during the swing. This drill is particularly helpful for golfers who tend to manipulate their arms too much during the swing.

How to perform the towel drill:

1. Setup:
Place a towel under each armpit, ensuring it’s snug but not overly tight.

2. Practice swings:
Take slow, controlled practice swings, focusing on keeping the towel in place throughout the swing.

3. Maintain connection:
The goal is to feel the arms working together with the body, rather than independently.

4. Progress to hitting balls:
Once you can maintain the towel’s position during practice swings, start hitting balls with the same controlled motion.

Benefits of the towel drill:

Improved connection:
The drill emphasizes the connection between the arms and body, leading to a more efficient and powerful swing.

Consistent clubface:
By promoting proper arm positioning, the drill helps golfers develop a more consistent clubface at impact, leading to more accurate shots.

Reduced manipulation:
The drill helps golfers avoid over-manipulating their arms and hands, allowing the clubhead to swing more freely.

Enhanced feel:
The drill can help golfers develop a better feel for their swing and the relationship between their arms and body.

Draw pattern:
For golfers struggling with slices, the towel drill can help them promote a draw pattern by encouraging a more connected and in-to-out swing.
Important Considerations:

Focus on feeling:
The towel drill is more about feel than mechanics, so focus on maintaining the connection and avoiding excessive movement.

Don’t force it:
If the towel falls out, don’t force it back in. Instead, focus on the feeling of connection and try again.

Gradual progression:
Start with slow swings and gradually increase speed as you become more comfortable with the drill.

Can be done with a headcover:
If you don’t have a towel handy, a headcover can be used instead

Hey Charles, what’s the purpose of practicing with the towel underneath your arms? Oh, you mean the towel trick? One of my faults in my golf swing is is on on the down swing, I’d kind of want to thrust a bit like this and my arms would run away from me and uh golf instructor David uh Trotchi and I couldn’t figure out like how to correct that, how to make me feel it. Have the towel under my arms to where I feel that I’m putting a lot of pressure from my armpits down to my like pecs down. But the main part is is down here. You know, through this region of the swing, I’m really trying hard to press this down so that my arms can move around me and then I don’t thrust back like this and I would lose the towel. [Music]
