So, when it comes to Callo’s new Opus SP grind wedges, there’s a lot more going on here than meets the eye. What makes the Opus SP wedges really interesting is how they are made. You’ve got a Forged 1025 carbon steel face for feel paired with a cast 8620 carbon steel body. That combination allowed Callaway to do something very, very interesting when it comes to weight distribution. Now, underneath this face, right about in here, you’re going to have a slot. The Callaway is referring to as a spin pocket. And by removing weight from the bottom of the sole and shifting it higher into the head, Callaway is saying that it’s able to lift up the center of gravity. Now, why is that important? Well, in wedges, especially your sand wedge and your lob wedge, when you can elevate the center of gravity location, you’re going to be able to hit the ball on a slightly more piercing, lower trajectory, which most people find easier to control. You’re also going to be able to generate more spin because more of the mass is going to be up here at the top. When it comes to the shape of the Opus SP, this is really going to be very, very similar to the original Opus wedges that came out last summer. There’s a new spin gen 2.0 groove. There’s also a new laser etching treatment that’s been giving to the face. And the laser etching between the grooves is actually put on before the chrome plating is added to the top. So, it should last a lot longer. The Opus SP wedges are available in five different sole grinds. So, there should definitely be one that is going to match the plane conditions that you face most often and the way that you approach short game.
