Yet another story of Scottie Scheffler just being a normal guy with a normal life…
Scottie Scheffler is about as relatable as it gets to the everyday golfer.
Which is a weird thing to say when you think about what he’s accomplished in a spell that’s seen him become comfortably the best player on the planet and earn more money than several generations of his family will ever be able to spend.
But Scheffler doesn’t need fancy things. He’s driven the same car for years, he enjoys an evening in with watching The Office and eating Chipotle with his wife, Meredith, and the life of being a super famous, super wealthy athlete isn’t what drives him.
So perhaps his latest attempt to convince everyone he is one of us – this time at the FedEx St Jude Championship – should come as little surprise.
“I use the same divot tool and ball marker most days, so a little ‘stitious,” he said, referencing a joke from his favorite show in which the lead character, Michael Scott, says “I’m not superstitious – but I am a little ‘stitious.”
Scheffler also noted that he has the same yardage book cover he’s had for the last four years, too. “Just habit,” he explained. “No reason to it. I like it. “It’s a good size, it’s got ‘USA’ on it. I think it’s pretty cool.”
He was then asked about his divot tool.
“Actually, it’s from Cypress Point,” he said. “It’s just the right size and it’s metal. They don’t really make those types of divot tools anymore, so I found one there and I’ve stuck with it.”
But, of course, this is Scheffler. So that’s never quite the end of the tale.
“I bought one last year or maybe two years ago, and I lost it at some point,” he explained. “I literally could not find another divot tool like that.
“Then I went on eBay, found a Cypress Point ball marker, paid like 50 bucks for it. Then I went back this year, and they were a little cheaper onsite so I got a couple extras.”
If you’re smirking while reading that last quote, it’s because you’re thinking the same thing as the rest of us. Don’t worry, we’ve done the math. With his PGA Tour career earnings alone, Scheffler could buy almost 2 million divot tools at $50 a pop.
But that’s not even the best part. Scheffler uses his real name on the auction site. Imagine being that seller.
“He sent it to me and wrote me a little note and everything,” Scheffler added. “He was a nice guy.”
Scheffler will head into the final round of the FedEx St Jude Championship – the first of the PGA Tour’s three post-season playoffs – two shots back of leader Tommy Fleetwood at TPC Southwind.
