Thank you. Yes. Appreciate it. Okay. All good. Perfect. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the press conference of our 2025 National Bank Open presented by Rogers men’s singles champion Ben Shelton. First of all, congrats Ben. It’s all good. Congrats on your first Masters 1000 title and you will be in number six which on PIFAP live rankings which is also your career high. How do you feel about your two weeks here? Uh yeah um really happy. I’m I’m grateful for for the opportunity. I feel like it was uh a perfect storm for me this week. Um a lot of tight matches, long matches. um played some of the best tennis that I’ve played this year. And um to finish out the weekend the way that I did, uh especially with the opponent that I had today and the way that he was playing, I I couldn’t be happier. Hey Ben, congrats on the win. Can you tell me about your approach in the tiebreaker? Uh yeah, I felt in that last game, um my slice serves were moving like 10 feet left to right. Uh, I don’t know what it was, a slight change in my ball toss or swing speed and um, I was getting a crazy amount of bend on the serve. So, I kind of just stuck with that. Uh, stuck with the slider serves, whether it was into the body or uh, to the forehand to the backhand. I was just trying to make that ball move left to right. I’ve been hitting a lot of fast balls um, throughout the match, a lot of straight balls, and I thought he was returning uh, that serve pretty well. Um, and and that’s kind of was my approach to going through my service points. Uh, on the returns, I was just trying to be uh really aggressive with my footwork, find forehands, try to get to neutral and and get to attack. And, uh, yeah, I hit one screamer of a return at the end of the tie break, but just try to flip the switch. I lost the first tie break, not being tentative, but he overpowered me. Um, he played bigger than I did. He he hit better shots than I did and I just didn’t want to go out the same way. Ben, congrats on the title. Two years uh ago, Yanick won his first big title here in Toronto and since then it’s been onward and upward for him. Do you think this could be your breakthrough moment? Uh yeah, you never know. I think everyone has a a different path. Uh, everyone’s story is is written differently and, you know, I’ve kind of done it my way. Uh, there’s been a lot of guys to to look up to just because how young they’ve been um when they have broken through and have had so much success at at big tournaments. Um, tennis seems to be a sport that has young champions all the time, which is not common or normal. Um it’s ultra impressive and uh yeah I uh I hope that you know this week kind of kickstarts me and gets me um more consistent with the the type of tennis that that I want to play uh day in and day out. And it’s certainly going to push me to to work harder. Um I feel like I have a good grasp now on on the things that really work for me. against guys who are playing some of the best tennis in the world and and the things that I need to continue to work on. Ben, you took some time to thank your dad in your postmatch speech. Just kind of describe what makes your coaching dynamic work. Uh yeah, he he knows me really well. Uh he doesn’t sugarcoat things. He’s he’s honest and uh I think I I take things well from him because I respect the career he had as a player. I respect him as a coach obviously and I respect him as my dad and uh he respects me in the same way. So I know that he has a great tennis mind. He he respects my tennis mind and um my independence knowing that you know he can he can let me let me go in in the big moments and just let me you know play my game. Um but he does a great job of injecting little uh bits and pieces throughout the match that help me. So, uh I think you know the the respect is is one thing that helps a lot and then just um the kind of coaching coach player model that we have I think works really well. Ben, congratulations on the win. You mentioned this week about resilience be resilience being the thing you’re most proud of of your game. Where today did you think you were the most resilient in the match? Uh I mean there was a lot of points uh or a lot of times in the match where I felt I was resilient you know um being up against it in the second set you know the way that he was holding serve kind of going through his service games. uh he served he served first so there’s scoreboard pressure and then being love being down low 40 uh trying to serve out the the set winning you know I forget five points in a row or whatever it was to to hold that game was was massive um for me and then um just same thing in the third set scoreboard pressure he’s getting through his games really easy serving amazing hitting great from from the baseline and I just continued to match him and and keep holding and played unbelievable tiebreaker. So, uh I think that that was just kind of the name of the game for me today. Ben, um this whole week you had pretty big crowds out there cheering you on. Uh how did you play off the crowd and and how do you think that you also helped to contribute to to fire them up throughout the week? Yeah. Uh I love getting the crowd involved. Um you know, hitting highlight shots, uh you know, hype hyping them up. Uh, I love hearing the crowd noise. For me, this was a week that I was pretty locked in. Um, probably less crowd interactions, but the tennis that that I was playing. Um, still got people excited. So, uh, for me, it’s it’s a big balance of being myself out there, having fun, smiling, which is just my DNA, and and focusing and doing what I need to do to get the job done. Uh hello Ben. Uh congratulations on on your win. Uh yeah earlier you were talking about uh like that that this win is going to push you to work even even harder. Um yeah what is uh what is the next step for you in terms of your game and your mentality to to take next step and and win a slam. You have been uh close making semi-finals but yeah what is next step for for you? Yeah, for me, um, being as consistent as I was this week, I think that the more opportunities that you have, the more times you put yourself in the position to to be playing against the best players in the world, you’re only going to get better. So, uh, for me, it’s being in the later stages of the tournament and playing against guys who are playing their their best tennis to see where I match up and see where my weaknesses are and and where I can get better. Um, I think that watching film is a huge piece for me. Something that I didn’t do as much in the past and as of late, you know, it’s been kind of an every match thing for me. Um, at least watching one match or one set start to finish on on the guy I’m playing. I think it’s an important piece of the game that maybe I overlooked a little bit in the past or didn’t think was as important cuz I was like, I’m going to impose my game on whoever’s playing or whoever I’m playing. But, um, it’s a it’s a really important part of the game and I think that my tennis IQ and my tennis mind is is something that is getting better and something that needs to continue to to get better. Thanks, guys.

  1. Honesty and sportsmanship is why I'm in camp Ben – still more to do, to improve … as long as he stays that way : i'll have a really hard time rooting against him.

I had the pleasure of watching you in person last night and you were sensational. Both you and Karen were superb competitors in every respect. Respect the game, respect the people. Golden rule. ๐Ÿ‘

  3. Big Ben!!! Uncle Sammy So happy and proud! Letโ€™s go USA ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ greetings everyone from Birmingham ๐Ÿ˜Ž

  4. Benny Biceps. Letโ€™s have a Grand Slam within the next 2 years Benny. So happy youโ€™re in the Masters 1000 club . ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ

  5. He's going out at the first round in cincy and maybe decent round at the US open, I'd say round of 16

  6. I admire Ben for not being afraid to look foolish and immature, it makes you appreciate when they finally mature and you see Growth, I admire that honesty Ben.

  7. He is the one to do it! He will win a slam! He is focused and determined. He has the right support system, mind set, and ability! Once he can make his backhand as much of a weapon as his forehand, itโ€™s a wrap. He can win a slam. He took a set off of Alcaraz at the French. He has played Sinner twice this year in grand slams and each time he has gotten the score line closer. AO 7-6, 6-2, 6-2. Wimbledon 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. He is knocking on the door!

  8. Love how he describes his relationship with his dad. Sounds downright ideal! Something to admire and respect.
